Train every level. You can go to Riverwood and pick up that elf (can't remember his name off-hand) that trains in bows as a follower, and get your money back from him as you train. Same with some of the Companions (IIRC). Also, check the wikis that are out there - they all have levelling tips for each individual skill, and also list places to find skill books (many are unguarded in easy to reach places in cities) and skill boosts (some are simple to get).
Also, make sure you have at least a rested bonus every day by sleeping in a bed. Once you get a house, you can get the well-rested bonus. Skip the Lover's Stone and pick one of the three Standing Stones near Riverwood (Warrior, Mage, Thief) - those combine with the rested bonus, while the Lover's Stone doesn't.
And as the above poster (and the OP!) said, once you are high enough level for the Oghma quest, you can use that exploit to carry you the rest of the way.
Speed levelling isn't difficult, just really boring.
