How many skills is to much?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 4:27 am

Right now I'm playing a warrior, I'm focusing on heavy armor, 2h weapons, smithing and some speech (yet to find a way to level this like my other skills). I'm going to make an archer class later but I think the skills i want to focus on are to many. Archery light armor block 1h weapons alchemy and sneak, as you can see that's a lot of skills. I was wondering will I be able to get all those with the full perk tree? In the past play throughs i found it hard to focus on primary skills and also focus on my other skills that I wanted to get perks in. If anyone has advice I'd appreciate it.

If anyone knows how to level speech faster then the occasional persuasion attempts and selling stuff let me know.

Buying and selling stuff is the only way to level speech. I don't even bother paying for training because during the game you'll have so much crap to sell that you'll easily level it in a natural way. I would also argue that spending perks on it is pretty much a waste because you'll amass more gold than you'll know what to do with anyway and most persuasion and intimidation attempts will work just fine if you level speech without taking the persuasion perks.

Check the guy who works the bar at the front of the Blackbriar Meadery - he's there during normal working hours.

He's got an option to (persuade) him to tell you about Lady Blackbriar, which you can repeat until you are 100 speech.

Looking at the wiki it looks like to get all the perks in the trees you mention would be above 70 perks which is probably too many. That's only if you take every single perk which I wouldn't say is necessary. Honestly it's best to look through the perk trees of the skills you want and choose which best suit your needs. Personally I have perks in a lot of trees, specializing in none of them but my character is fun to play. Honestly you don't really need all the one handed perks unless you plan to rotate through swords, axes and maces so that frees up a lot of perks. Also, unless you plan to get all five levels in the damage increase perk in the one handed tree that's some more you can save on. I don't think you've chosen too many skills but you will have to make some decisions on which perks are really important to your playstyle.

I play an archer assasin. I only use the bow damage, zoom and slow zoom perks in archery. The criticals and other archery perks just arent needed. Also, I couldnt see block being used at all. The point of an archery is to attack from afar, then close with swords or daggers. If you are getting attacked, you are probably dead. I focused on 1-H (swords only, no power attacks, no dagger perks), Sneak, light armor (only 3 perks), alchemy, smithing and enchanting. My lockpick and speech are very high (80+) just from working on them, no perks.

Note you don't need a full perk tree. Just about every perk tree has a few perks that are just useless. Just pick out the few perks you want from five or six trees and you'll do fine.

You get Speech up also by bribing/persuading/intimidating.
You're right about rest of the post, though.

Trying to level up and perk two different combat methods will spread you thin and make the game harder. Of the Skills you listed, I'd focus on Archery and Sneak primarily. The backstab talents in Sneak along with the Shrouded Gloves from the Dark Brotherhood will allow you to use daggers effectively for minimal perk investment. Once you get Shadow Warrior in Sneak, you can effectively melee things to death by restealthing for extra backstabs.

The Light and Heavy Armor perk trees are relatively weak, and the Skill will be very difficult to level up as assassin-types don't do much toe-to-toe combat. You can pay for Light Armor training as often as possible, or go out and let things beat on you, but those options are expensive and time consuming. If being durable is important to you, I'd suggest putting two points in Smithing (for Elven), the standard eight into Enchanting, and only three into Light Armor (1/5 Agile Defender, Custom Fit, Matching Set) as that will armor cap you once your Skill are maxed. Anything less than that probably won't be worth the time/ money/ perk invesment.

I'd avoid Block. As an assassin, you won't be engaging in enough toe-to-toe combat to keep it leveled, nor will you be durable enough early on to make that style feasible even if you're so inclined.

Alchemy is a straight crafting grind which is only limited by your access to the proper ingredients. It's also one of the slowest and most expensive grinds in the game, so you might want to reconsider taking it.

Then I'll refer you to the first sentence of my previous post. Trying to level up/ perk two types of combat (Archery and 1h + Shield) will spread you thin and make the game more difficult. If you wish to do so for RP reasons, etc. that's entirely up to you, but I wouldn't recommend it.

When I played my duel wielding assassin that used a bow I found he would die easily that's why I want block it would help with that.

There are two optimal solutions to that probem: (1) you could improve your Sneak and Archery to the point where things die before they reach you; or (2) you could give up Archery and dedicate yourself to 1h + Shield.

Trying to level up and perk all three of those skills will ensure you're not good at any of them. If your difficulty is set low enough, that might not be a problem, but I assume people are playing on Normal or higher when they ask questions here.

I'm considering this same build
For all the req's on a good build (i.e., max powered), you're looking at about 64 perks by my count for all the goodies

Archery - 13 (this is light so you kind of miss out on Ranger and more arrows, 5 overdraw, eagle eye, 1 steady hand, 3 crit, power shot, quick shot, bullseye)
Block - 10 (no running or charge)
one- hand - 10 (5 armsman, fighting stance, hack & slash, savage strike)
smithing - 5 (dragonscale armor)
Enchanting - 8 (standard)
Alchemy - 7 (standard)
Light armor - 3 (defender r1, custom fit, matching set- might not need all of these especially if you're wearing a shield whenever you're in melee combat)
Sneak - 8 (more than one rank of stealth is a waste, think it's only like 5% per perk after the first. I'm also not counting x15 daggers because if you're meleeing, daggers svck)

So, in conclusion: It's doable, though you're going to have to have a pretty high level character to get there.
