How much creativityresearch do you put into characters?

As title says, i easily have over 2000 words on my main character on notepad, most i wrote before skyrim was even released, i was that hyped for the game, i did so much research into lore and other things.

Most of my other characters i play and then scrap, except two, but i just made a new character, an Altmer... i wanted him to be very samurai inspired, so i did some research on samurai culture, after i found out about Sepukki, i decided this character would be from a background where he was outcast by his people, i made it so he had to give up his name, and earn redemption whilst wandering the world as 'The Shamed One'... i then did some research into Altmer and Aldmeri culture, i found a word 'Morimath' which means in Alyeid 'Darkened Home'.. and so i called him 'He Whom Brought Morimath'... which is the shameful name he has been cast with, by his cultures warrior code... so now im sort of just going to go along with the story, making it up as i go along.. should be fun

So as title says, what are your thoughts and experiences?

My characters tend not to have backstories or anything. All they have is a reason for being in Helgen, and a few 'strands' of their past. Other than that, everything is done in the game, and they're shaped by their actions and what happens to them.

An entire back story from birth until the start of his adventures. Look on my profile about how I've run the same character since Daggerfall... and his blog/journal (link is in my sig) that details the events of his life.

Since I play DiD, I run a dumpster character right alongside Nocturne so that I can get an idea of what's coming up in Nocturnes life. But that doesn't take away the challenge at all. My dumpster character plays on the default Adept difficulty. Nocturne is played on Master.

But read the "About Me" page on my profile. It contains a summarized history of Nocturne's life from birth all the way to him entering Skyrim (though I admit that I need to update it...).

So yeah... I put a lot of work into my characters, and I'm the same way with my Khajiit Warrior, Sher Khan. Though I also have to admit that Ineed to finish his background story as I have just started him with Skyrim. But maybe I'll create a Khajiit Warrior in Daggerfall and play through each game in between sessions of Skyrim. lol

I decide what playstyle/skillset/modset I want to try, and then make a pretty face & come up with a name on the fly.
