How much higher does the level cap need to be?

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 9:40 pm

You can easily get to level 30 with 1/2 of the content in the game. If you add more content to the game with add ons how much higher does the level cap need to go?

To 35, why have an extra perk

To 40, nice round number, and an additional 5 more perks

To 45, there is enough xp in just the regular game for 45

To 50, as long as they add more perks

I dont like actually leveling and progressing my character, there should be no level cap raise

We dont need more levels. Fallout isnt about how godly and tough our character is. Leveling up is only a side benefit. Seriously, the level cap is fine where it stands as is.

None. Right now there's a good balance as far as leveling up and the amount of perks you get. I don't like having a whole bunch of nice perks, I like having to pick and choose. Keeps your character feeling more balanced and human rather than some freakish killing machine.

If anything, just giving us slower leveling would work better.

The problem with raising the level cap is that the game will become extremely unbalanced. You can become a jack-of-all-trades again, which kinda defeats the purpose of a character build dedicated to a specific playstyle. If they increase the level cap, they should make it so that you get no skill points or raise the skill cap 255(which I believe is the cap in the originals).

Of course, the best thing to do would be to increase the amounts of XP needed to level up.

I wouldn't say no to a perk every level past level 20 though. Five perks more feels about right. Not sure about 10 more levels though, that might be too many skill points.

Me? I liked the -old- system...

I liked it when the skills went up to 300%... and the perks were every four levels... and the limit was what, like level 80? 88? Something ridiculous?

It all worked fine because you -never- hit the damn limit. It was as close to being 'limitless' as was needed. You -always- had skills which could be improved. You didn't have to svck at everything to make a few skills pretty good. It was a good system, and it made me sad that Bethesda ditched it in favor of ripping off the same system they used for The Elder Scrolls.

Really, how is it different? The attributes?

Agility, Endurance, Intelligence, Luck, Personality, Speed, Strength, and Willpower

Oh so... what they did was ditch the one attribute that didn't fit in? Whoops... Willpower's gone... and then renamed the rest?

Meh. Didn't sit right with me.

You want to make me happy? Don't just raise the level cap. Ditch the entire damn system, and go back to something a little more like Fallout 1 or 2. I know, I know, it sounds like I'm doing my 'Old Guard' schtick... but really. That was a much better system for Fallout, and it would have worked much better for Fallout 3 and New Vegas than the Elder Scrolls system does.

While I'm at it... get RID of the -having- to level up thing.

Seriously. It's bad. Really bad.

I want to spend my points when I'm good 'n ready!

[edit:]

Anyhow... the point I was trying to make was that, with the old system, you didn't run into this jack of all trades business... because 100% was rated against something like 200% in Fallout 1 and 300% in Fallout 2.

And then, on top of that, once skills hit a certain level... it cost more points to raise them!

So you had balance! It was balanced! Nobody had a skill of 300% in everything unless they cheated! How awesome is that?

You could play through the whole game and never hit the level cap, when you got a skill to a certain level it cost more to raise it, you couldn't max every skill without cheating, and most playthroughs I have had... I finished the game at something like level 45 at the highest.

That was wandering around for days and days after finding the GECK, exploring places and doing side-quests.

Some things, I'm glad they're gone.

Some things, I wonder why they changed them.

Sometimes, the whole 'if it ain't broke' rule applies...

I'm cool with a level cap of 30, but there should still be an incentive to keep playing even though you hit the cap. Perhaps some set perk(s) they give you at level 30 that slowly improves with each set amount of XP that you get.

Like, say for example, at Level 30 you can get a free Perk called "Master Gunner" or something like that, from a choice of several. From there on out, every 5000XP you get will improve the perk by 1%. This 1+% can go ABOVE the usual skill cap of 100.

Kids these days who had play too much WoW and CoD only knows level more and grind better gears. They may not even know how Arthurs become the Lich King and what happened during Cold War.

I would have very much liked trying out this old system. I played Fallout 1 when it first came out but I sadly remember very little of it now. But yes, that old system sounds very much like a system where people have to tailor their build according to their playstyle instead of the almost carbon copy builds we eventually end up having.

Ah well.

By the end of the first Baldur's Gate you were level 7 and it was more than enough.

Ahh good old time.

The level cap doesn't need to go anywhere.

The only thing that needs to go are all these munchkins insisting the level cap needs to be raised.

The only reason I'd want the level cap to go higher would be so I can hear that satisfying KA-CHING everytime I find a location.
But if it meant adding more perks and skill points, then it'd have to be a definite no, as already stated.

This.

The current leveling system is damn good so far. Much better than Fallout 3's.

Reason? It's actually balanced for starters.

What the leveling system could use though is a slower progression rate. As it is, you could probably get to level 30 by the end of the work week.

I'm pretty sure a slower rate would also mean we'd see less people complaining about the level cap.

I personally am fine with the level cap as is. Although even if it was 100 I think there would still be some people complaining that it should be higher, especially if you can reach it at any point during the game especially via grinding foes, hmm there would probably still be people complaining if it was bumped up to 5,000 and again was reachable ingame.

This sounds fab. I like not being Godly in this game, but if the above couldn't be implemented again, I'd be happy with an option (similar to the difficulty settings) which players could use to set how much XP they could earn, making leveling slower for those who would want it.

The level cap at 30 is perfect, anyways if someone wants a god like character buy a PC and use mods  . I have enjoyed building a character with the system we've been given in NV, and yes :blush2: sometimes I love playing the overpowered one :gun: as well, I'm on PC. Don't the consoles have cheats to?.... stuff like game shark and whatnot. I just hope they don't release a DLC that raises the level that will kill the balance we didn't have in FO3, and are we allowed to change something like that in a mod so it stays at 30? I know there are some rules when it comes to the game code.

The reason most people want a higher level cap is because they play too much COD and WOW and no nothing but grinding and big explosions.

I hope they raise the cap to 31 and have 600.000 exp requirement for it.
That way you "can" advance and get more powerful, it's just going to take a a craplong time.

I like the sounds of how the old system worked. Easy fix to the current system would be to not only raise the level cap, raise the skill point caps from 100 to 200! Fixed

yeah that wouldn't work too well with science or lockpicking. The game was designed around the 100 limit. I just think it would be a bad idea to raise the level cap without raising point caps also. It probably can't be done and that's fine. The game is balanced the way it is now. I do hope they have a higher skill point/level cap in future fallout games.

level 30 is fine, its the rate of exp gain that needs to be slowed. i slowed it by 2.5x and it's just perfect. coming up on level 11 as I entered the strip for the first time with this character, having done PLENTY in the wasteland. Literally, I'd have been level 30 already on a vanilla game, and the game would already be over. There's still the entire House/Caesar/NCR questline left to do (I really hate going to nellis) and I suspect I'll reach a decently high level killing death claws at the promontory (very hard difficulty though)... i finally figured out how to dodge their melee attack.

one thing that has actually greatly impacted my play is having the hardcoe timers at 12.5x their normal rate, as well. I need to carry no less than 40 bottles of water with me, and watch my food and sleep very often. Ironically I find myself needing food and sleep more than water, as it is fairly easy to find. The food and sleep thing has led to some interesting adventures, including being forced to sleep with some Chem Addicts I found in the wasteland because any further movement resulted in a game over.

I also found out 'TGM' doesn't work if you increase your timescale to the point where you can die in your sleep from thirst and hunger :P

edit: in FO1/2, when skills went up to 200, a 10 int/educated character received 34 skillpoints, which is exactly DOUBLE what you receive now. It's completely balanced folks..

I never played fallout 1 and 2 but this seems like such a good system, I can't believe they threw it away. It might sound stupid but when I reach the level cap in fallout 3 ( or new vegas ) I just can't be arsed to move on. I might finish up some quests but then I just start a new character. An almost limitless level cap would be SOO much better for the people who like to explore the game in one go and then play things out differently in the second go. Instead of doing only a part of the quests one time around.
