How much will a video card run me?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 12:52 pm

Ok so i have skyrim for ps3, i love it i do, it's just i wish i could mod it up a bit, add a chair to clifside retreat, amoungst other things. so i did a check on my computer and i have a lame video card, i have anIntel? HD Graphics Family. so if i want to get skyrim for my computer and be able to mod it and have it nice and smooth, what would be the minimum i would need as far as a video card? i passed on every thing else. thanks in advance. sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

1- That blue is hard to read
2- Your best bet is to post in the tech thread in the CD forum. or shop New Egg.

Indeed. Intel HD chipsets are usually the default laptop 'cards'.

If you have a laptop you can't really get a replacement video card...

Then it sounds like one of those cheap things from wallmart. Which means a crappy power supply.

What are the exact specs of your computer?

Where did you get your computer and what model is it? If you go to system information or properties by digging around the control panel, and/or my computer, this information is usually easy enough to find.

The reason I ask is the same as the user above. A nice video card is one thing, but you need a robust system in order to handle it. I have a crappy pair of Nvidea GTS 250s, and they are old. Even so, they need a lot of power and a lot of cooling.

So your computer may not be able to handle a new video card, and we don't want to send you to the store to spend tons of money to buy something you can't use.

there is a button in the top left of the reply window that looks like a little erasor. Just highlight your text and click it to remove any formatting. Someone thought it would be brilliant to make the forum software copy the formatting from whatever you copy.

Your computer seems decent enough, but it indeed sounds like a budget PC with no real backbone. Im going to guess at a 250-300W power supply.

What is the absolute maximum you are willing to pay for upgrades? For a decent graphics care (with power supply) you are looking at around $200-$300

Yea.. these look like the selling points. The connectivity, usb and card reader, optical drive, webcam and such don't really matter.
The motherboard and power supply are important.

Based on your processor, I would guess that this is a pre-assembled computer meant for home or office, and not really a video game machine.
It will be able to play skyrim on low settings, of this I have no doubt.

What I suspect is that you are better off saving your money as far as a graphics card goes, because you will need to upgrade serveral things in order to see any real performance boost.
A graphics card would help, surely, but you may not be able to use one that's good enough to notice the difference.

Wow, dont feel down man, really, your computer can handle skyrim in every area except graphics and ANY graphics card is better than intel HD, there's also resolution of your monitor to consider and like these guys were saying, your power supply...

I'd say take your computer down to the shop and ask for advice.

This would be a decent "inexpensive" power supply and video card choice:

Corsair 430w - $27 after rebate.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=17-139-026&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=100&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Keywords=%28keywords%29&Page=1#scrollFullInfo

HD6850 1GB - $120 after rebate, includes two free games. [Dirt 3/S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat]
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150573

Installation would be extra, or try to hunt down another PC geek or gamer among your friends/family to do it.

Edit: And you can't have a slimline PC or all-in-one.
