How do I officially become a member of the NCR?

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 12:33 am

I dress in NCR gear, only do NCR quests... but they still call me a civvie and refuse to lend out troops when I need them for certain quests.

If your reputation is high enough, and it isn't tarnished, you can radio in for help. It's only one trooper but I believe that's the best you can get I believe. I'm pretty sure you can't become an actual member of the NCR military.

If you are a PC user and aren't averse to mods there is one out there that does let you "officially" become a member of the NCR military. I won't link to it as I haven't used it and I am unsure as to if it contains content that may be a violation of the forum rules but it's easy enough to find with a google search.

certain quests are asking me to ask other NCR camps for reinforcements..

I suppose this is a reputation thing ie I need higher NCR rep.

Yes. If you aren't "Liked" by the NCR, then asking other camps for reinforcements just leads to other side quests for those camps until they approve of you. Eventually I stopped helping and visited Mr. House and when I left the Lucky 38 an NCR trooper gave me a letter saying all of my crimes against NCR were forgiven. Next thing you know my NCR reputation was "Liked" and I went back to the camps and they sent troops immediately.

I think you need to do all their side quests in each of their camps before you ask them to help you sent in more troops to Bitter Springs. I assumed you're talking about "Bitter Springs" quest, "No, Not Much", correct? http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/No,_Not_Much

Why would you want to be a NCR soldier/officer? Being one would mean you always have to follow the orders of your superiors.
I didn't like being ordered around by that NCR colonel, not at all.

If you were in the NCR, you'd be halfway to General by now.

There's a mod that allows you to be a member of the militart NCR, but you have to do a few side quests to advance. Other than that, maybe later in a DLC.

There's a difference between "NCR citizen" and being a "NCR soldier". NCR citizenship, within the time frame of the game, is irrelevant. It would just mean that you would have to pay NCR taxes and in return get the right to vote in NCR elections. Neither of those apply in FNV. Conversely, there is NO option for you to enlist in the NCR military. Instead, you can help the NCR military -- and thereby help the NCR -- by working as an independent contractor. (Think of yourself as being a one-person Blackwater or Halliburton enterprise.

I doubt they would give a random wastelander with no military experience, NCR citizenship or a long service record a high position, maybe you can make lieutenant at most or maybe a ranger.

actually its the NCR gear your wearing, ive tested this. wearing their gear sets your reputation automatically to neutral while your wearing their armor (any factions armor)
if your idolized and call in support then its "yes sir!"
put on your armor while idolized its "sorry, we dont like you enough"
take it off "yes sir!"

im not quite sure if you still gain the rep to your character even while wearing it (as in, your neutral, put it on, do some missions, take it off and considered liked?)

Theoretically, you start the game being at a Neutral rep for every faction. If you do something harmful toward a faction -- e.g., killing its personnel or thwarting any of their operations -- your rep drops (from Shunned on down to Vilified). Do something helpful to that faction -- mostly completing any of their quests -- moves you up the rep ladder to Accepted, then Liked, then Idolized. How much a shift is valued at is related to how much the action helps or hurts the faction.

Wearing a faction's uniform doesn't so much affect your standing with that faction as it makes you effectively invisible as _you_, until you do something that draws attention to yourself. It also affects you as to how you interact with your Companions. For instance, if you want to annoy Boone, put on a Legion uniform. You may have to actually convince him that doing so would be a useful thing to do (i.e., it acts as camouflage).

Call me a whiner, but I got up to 'For the Republic Part 2" and met with Colonel Moore. I pretty much said "Screw This" and made a new game and went back to my Mr.House character playthroughs.

Seriously, Colonel Hsu and Embassoder Crocker are the only Tolerable NCR personnel. I dropped my attempt at an NCR playthrough after meeting Colonel Moore. :/

Pretty much any NCR government personnel were completely frustrating with. If I wasn't railroaded to have to deal with seeing an NCR trooper every 5 feet in the Mojave I'd not try so hard to keep from being hated by them. Hell, I can't even go on a damn bathroom break in that game without running into an NCR trooper and that line 'We won't go quietly, the Legion can count on that.'

Spoiler tags, just in case-
Spoiler
I staunchly endured the coolly sociopathic Colonel Moore... and then, to my dismay, was ushered into the presence of the ferret-like General Oliver. Sheesh.
I applaud the game's willingness to make the ostensible good guys (NCR, House) so unlikable and their counterparts (Caesar, Benny) reasonably personable. Really, it's an interesting approach.
And I like all the NCR citizens and troopers (even if they are all suffering from verbal OCD) and enjoy helping them out even if I'm planning to betray them later. Plus, you know, they get the bulk of the content (seems like it, anyway).
Honestly, though, one of these times Moore's getting a bullet to the head before Oliver gets his, damn the consequences. Harpy.

I think some NPCs will refer to you favorably as a "citizen" or "member" of the NCR if you have positive rep, while others will refer to you as not being in the NCR at all no matter what your rep. I'm blanking on specific examples of one or the other (maybe Boyd, Oliver?).

Yeah, but House is just overly confident in himself, that is 5x more tolerable than a sociopath and a general whos only credential as a general is being a presidential kiss ass.

I think when you become Liked by the NCR you become one of them because in some conversations with other NCR soldiers it has a sentence which says "[NCR] Yes I am a soldier for the NCR" and other things like that. I think thats the closest you will be able to get to be a real NCR member.

Well, the way the game plays it off is that you're pretty much a favored NCR independent contractor. Apparently, allowing us citizenship of NCR, Caesars Legion, or New Vegas is not easy to program in. :spotted owl:

Yeah true, it would have added a bit more depth to the main storyline if you could rise through the ranks of one of the faction's. Even some of the members in NCR say "If you were serving, you'd be half way to general by now". The way I saw it the NCR had some really incompetent leaders so it would have been good to be a leader of one of the factions and actually lead it down the right path. I think they didn't do that because its way too complicated.

Honestly, if you're siding with NCR, you should be made President. I mean, going from the grave to establishing NCR in the Vegas region within a few weeks time? Thats more than Kimball did in 7 years. :spotted owl:

I'm guessing you've played to the end and experienced what the NCR actually do give you for handing them one of their greatest military victories ever, but the real question is if the Courier is never promised or offered membership, a military commission, rewards of some kind why side with them all, let alone trek around the Mojave forming alliances to insure their victory.
