Mount a generic horse (such as the ones that spawn at imperial or stormcloak camps), then kill it.

In Oblivion, I would always put my horse in the stables and close the fence gate. In Skyrim, I dont use horses.

I don't really use horses , but this probably works since your previous horse goes back to the stable you bought it at when you ride a new one .

I think the only way to keep it from 'following' you is to not Fast Travel.

Is your horse supposed to follow you?

Mine doesnt, if I get off and walk away it stands there until I get back on it.

Follow you as in walking down the road with you, no. Follow you when you fast travel, yes. And I agree, its pretty lame when I have a horse that I might have left behind days ago for it to all of a sudden show up in front of me when I fast travel a few feet to fix getting stuck in terrain.

"Whoa! Where did this f#$%ing horse come from?!"

Be advised that parking the horse in the widerness can cause them 'go away'. I say 'go away' because I'm not sure if they are randomly killed or stolen while I'm not present or despawn because of a bug. I've lost like 3 of them so far and they weren't killed in front of me (I reload a Save when that happens) and I couldn't find their corpses near where I left them.

the horses appear where you go to and will stay there if you don't mount them
or they don't die
svcks that they feel the deeply rooted need to be loyal to us
I got three killed and have never bought another
I'll ride if they're mountable because then the horse goes back wherever it was going in the first place, I just wont have my own again.

I had Shadowmere and I ran it off a cliff (I didn't think it was that high). Anyway it died and hasn't followed me since.

You actually killed Shadowmere? LOL He's a tough fighter and he tanks my dragons LOL He's my only companion in the Wilds, because I sneak through dungeons and don't want followers. But Shadowmere, he's cool! :)

Honestly I think it was a fluke as the cliff wasn't 20 feet high. But he dropped dead and I rolled off unharmed. I figure 'what the heck I quick travel anyway' and left him there. If they would EVER let horses carry loot, they would be invaluable, but as they are they are only a liability.
