Gather the stuff you need to make some basic items. ie: make a few iron weapon and armor pieces.

Most blacksmiths will have plenty of the bits you need.

Make things at the forge, iron daggers are usually the best bet. you can improve them at the wheel for more smithing skill.
If you really want to milk it, enchant the daggers to boost that skill up as well and then sell them off (boosts speech) and repeat.

Go to the smith in Riverwood, he should give you a tutorial - then you'll learn what you need and what the different things are for.

Also, this website is great for Skyrim, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Smithing

That URL should take you to the page with smithing information.

You need to mine ore and kill animals to get leather - or have enough money to purchase the items from traders/smiths.

Good luck.

But i already have a set of armor and a weapon. why should i make items, especially iron daggers? I guess im looking for a legitimate way, where smithing is increased doing some useful game process. Enchant is increased by using enchanted items, Alchemy by consuming reagents, armor and weapon skills by killing enemies. Smithing only through powergaming?

Smithing doesn't increase based on item like alchemy, it's just one fixed number, so the easiest thing is the best. It's kind of pathetic really. Smithing a Daedric armor should give me a crap ton of experience rather than an iron dagger.

I just made Hide Bracers. 1 leather, 2 leather strips. Most smith vendors sell leather to use, and don't forget to look for skins at general vendors.

btw where is Repair in Skyrim?? That would solve the problem nicely, logically it would increase smithing.

There is no weapon or armor degradation in Skryim. So there goes that option...

No, smithing is increased through smithing, same as enchanting is increased by making enchantments. (<- not by using enchantments) ;)

If you want to become a badass at smithing then you''ll have to smith. As simple as that. You either have to create items or temper (improve) existing items. And there's the option to spend some coin at a smithing trainer.

In order to use enchantments, you have to re-charge your weapons (Soul Siphon was a waste of a perk :( )

Using soul-gems to recharge weapons increases your Enchanting skill.

If you don't want to spam Iron Daggers, you could try making a suit of every armor type you can, upgrading it, and finding somewhere or someone to display them.

Iron daggers are the best option. They just require 1 iron ingot and 1 leather strip. Both are cheap/easy to find.

Iron ingots are usually in plentiful supply at armor merchants and some dungeons have iron ore, which can be smelted into iron ingots.

Leather strips come from leather. Just take any animal pelts (wolf, bear, etc.) and use tanning to turn the leather into strips.

Start crafting away and watch your smithing level (and character level) rise steadily.

Don't mean to be nasty but you are kidding, right?

If not:
As with real life the more you do something, the better you'll get at it. Practice makes perfect as they say. So smithing skill.... ANYTHING to do with the blacksmith will improve this area so, do so repeatedly. Someone already mentioned the exploit to do this easilly so I wont repeat it here. I think it's a cheap way to level up and didn't do it to get my Dragon Armour (even though Daedric for me is much better).

It also helps to mine with a focus on what you need and marking where those mines are so you can quickly revisit them when you need ores. Stockpile and store it all and when the time comes, smith new gear.

Sure you can spam daggers but if you want to earn xp legitimately, just grab ores and pelts while on the road then make ingots and leather + strips when you get back to town and smith whatever you can [that you're perked to smith]. Store all your remaining bits away for the next time.

I upgrade my armor and weapon sets every couple of levels. All new crafted sets with new enchants. Even if the enchants only raise it by a point, it all helps out and you sell your old gear and make some coin back and have earned a litle xp on smithing and enchantment. once you get to the smithing perk you want [in my case, Glass] then there's really no point in smithing for XP.

iron daggers if you have lots of iron or leather bracers if you have plenty of leather, after that you can either sell them or enchant them first to raise enchanting too

Nope. You can buy materials from the smith for cash, and use the forge to create new weapons and armour. Doing so raises your skill and you can then either wear them or sell them to the Blacksmith.

Just combine the bits of iron you mine in the wilderness with the iron weapons that bandits have, and turn the animal pelts into leader and upgrade the fur and hide armors you loot.

You don't need to churn out hundreds of iron daggers. You can just upgrade stuff you've looted from fallen enemies before selling them. That is a bit more natural - fixing up the stuff you've won from battles before selling it for profit.

Yes, obviously. But your point is? You still don't increase enchanting by using the enchantments. ;)

If you don't want to powergame get a follower and improve their arms and armour. I usually have a few followers that I switch between depending on who will be most useful and keep them outfitted in the best I can outfit them in.
Also making money is a "legitimate" reason. Stick to ores/ingots and pelts you gain from adventuring and the stuff you make is pure profit.

The point is, skills are increased naturally as the game progresses. Enchant is increased by specifically using charges on an enchanted item. (not only by recharging). Although i havent checked it specifically in Skyrim, it did in Morrowind.
