If you look in the application log you will probably see an error with information like
Faulting application name: FalloutNV.exe, version: 1.0.0.240, time stamp: 0x4c9808f2
Faulting module name: ASAudio.ax, version: 1.3.1.98, time stamp: 0x48119577
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00010416
Faulting process id: 0x2f0c
Faulting application start time: 0x01cb6ff82e13fba4
Faulting application path: c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\FalloutNV.exe
Faulting module path: C:\PROGRA~2\COMMON~1\ArcSoft\MPEGEN~1\ASAudio.ax
Report Id: 724cb538-dbeb-11df-afef-0026b9ba39c6
I my case I was able to google ASAudio.ax and 0xc0000005 and found the exact same problem for Oblivion along with the solution.
Why the programmers didn't allow the error to go to the windows error reporting service so they could look at the data for trends is beyond me.
Good Luck!
Ralph
