My original thoughts were that it was to do with the lack of attributes etc making me feel like the character wasn't a real person, but I think there is more to it than that.

I like how you think turning your character into a glorified spreadsheet makes the character "more like a person".

See, we had a nice positive thread until you came along. I'm so glad you posted here.

I am going to explain Why I like attributes. It doesnt mean that they're better for gameplay, though I think they are, it's just Why I like them.

I like attributes because they represent what your character is naturally good at which to me is realistic. For example, in a game with Attributes, having high strength makes you naturally good at all types of melee weapons without having to train with them. Training with them just improves your already decent ability. Someone who is weak is naturally not so good with melee weapons, but if they train they can become good. You can compare this in the real world to sports. A fit and strong hockey player is likely to also be good at American Football due to his physical ability, when compared with say, a scientist. He may not be as good as a football player due to lack of training, but he has a natural physical ability. This is represented, as mentioned before, by Attribute bonuses to skills that you would expect to be affected by them. That Scientist could become good, maybe even get to be better than the Hockey player if he practiced a lot.

You can also use INT as an example. That same Hockey player is quite likely to be of average or below average intelligence. The Scientist is likely to be pretty smart. If both of them were to take up say.. Accounting and Economics, the Scientist would naturally do better due to his natural thinking ability.

I would also like to point out the gameplay advantage for thieves. Traditionally DEX was an important attribute for thieves, as it helped with almost all of their skills. Now they have a choice between Health, Stamina, and Magica. Which one of those is a thief type stat? None? Exactly. Your thief needs to do power attacks less than your warrior, so he can probably have the same or higher HP that your warrior - who is supposed to be a freeking tank - while still excelling in his own field.

I felt like my character was being represented properly in the game world when there was attributes, and now I dont. This is MY OPINION. I know other people have other opinions. I was putting my opinion out there, and asking for advice on how I could still enjoy Skyrim, not for you to try to flame me. Thanks.

Probably not a mage then.

Why do you think it is that a CV does not look like a roleplaying game character sheet??

Haha, nope I wouldnt consider myself a mage.

Uhm I think that a CV doesnt look like a roleplaying game character sheet due to the fact that in real life there is no way to measure someones abilities scores other than with physical testing (though there are different types of fitness) and an IQ score, so they have to think of other ways to measure it..

But anyway, I just wanted to ask a question and if I dont shut up now I'll be late for work.

I'm not a hardcoe or veteran roleplayer, so I don't know if my reply will be helpful, but here it goes.

Right now I play with all markers disabled. And I mean both compass and map markers, either visited or unvisited. I can only see the compass on my screen, so it gives a lot of immersion. Also I hide the "current position" marker on the map so even if I open it on my travels (I don't), I can't see where I am at all.

I walk everywhere (not run), which makes the exploration and adventuring longer and more immersive. My Timescale is set to 3, so for example if I play for 4 real life hours, ingame time advances 12 hours. It's good because you can wake up (ingame) at 8am, go around sell some stuff, walk to a dungeon, clear it, walk somewhere else, etc... and be back at home at 5pm ingame time after playing for about 3 real life hours. Default timescale is 20, which is too fast in my opinion.

Also I enforce rules for my char, so I only use the skills I choose (in this case, Archery, Sneaking, Light Armor, Merchandise, Lockpicking). It's good-aligned so I don't go around picking items that are not mine, even if they interest ME, just because my character wouldn't do it.

About the back story? I'm not quite sure really... I though on it later, while playing the game. Though that I could be some traveler who hit his head with a rock and forgot about everything.

Then I just try to adapt to this world and live in it. This character is pro-empire (not a fanatic tho), so it's also following its orders. As for other guilds, only one that fits it's Companions, so she's in too.

I know I haven't been much help, but anyway, if you hate Oblivion and are more MW-fan, then maybe this game isn't for you at all, because is more Oblivion style. Maybe you're too much expecting something like MW... and you only need to make your mind to this different style.

In any case, good luck and have fun.

I find creating a back story to your character really helps. This way their backstory should affect your choices in the game itself. Don't like Bretons (for whatever reason), don't deal with any Bretons unless essential, (Or if your on the road, and meet one, kill them right there).

Some good questions:

a) Why where you arrested (guilty or entirely innocent)
B) Where was you heading, where was you coming from.
c) What your last job was.

If you think about those when creating a character, it certainly gives you that "bond" with your character, and it makes you "think" about the choices in the game, and not just follow the quest hoping to get the best bonus and doing anything to get that bonus. I will refuse to do an action if I believe it does not fit the characters motivation. This really makes the game quite interesting then.

It's funny to think that the main heroes of Morrowind and Oblivion might have been child molesting genocidal serial killing rapists.

kali is a very gentle soul, never steals, only kills in self defense. If a quest-line includes a lot of (to my mind) senseless killing I don't do it . She always gives gold to beggars, runs errands and does not have a follower because it feels like slavery. walks everywhere and pick herbs does a bit of mining too and makes jewelery. As a mage wears just cloth and wends her way through her world with a gentle smile.
Now my partners Khajiit is a sneaky assassin, steals, kills, breaks in any shop or building , is unwelcome in most cities And seems a lot of fun.. Partner says that he can do all the things that he would not dream of doing in real life!
so make your char.. decide what he likes or dislikes .. and just have fun :)

How do you alter the timescale, is this something you can only do on PC?
How do you change the timescale?

It's with a console command. It isn't exactly a "cheat", so I hope there is no problem if I post it in this forum:

set timescale to X

Being "x" the number of minutes. Default is 20 (1 real life minute = 20 ingame minutes). I read somewhere that setting it to "1" creates some problems with quests or random dragon spawns, and that 3 is the lowest safe value. I've got it set to 3 and I don't seem to have problems with quests. But it's been a while since I last saw a random dragon spawn. Normal dragons work without problem anyway (bounty ones, or quests about dragons with a name).

There is another command, "show timescale", which shows current value. The value you set gets stores for that character, meaning that when you save the game, you don't need to set it again.

That's something I've got planned for my next char. Anyway I would need to write it down so I can remember all the things and act accordingly. I even though on setting things like fear to water, or height, meaning that I would be limited to some things, too. Those are just examples, but I think that setting a good profile for the char, makes the game more immersive and challenging.
