In villages where there are woodchopping blocks, there's usually someone there who will pay you for the wood you chop. Same with mining and farming.

It's not like a real-world job where you have to show up every day, in case you weren't clear.

I'm assuming you don't consider joining one of the factions as a "job." You do get paid for quests/jobs.

Here's what I'm doing; first I'm not joining a faction except the Legion and that would be later.

Since I become the Thane of Whiterun by default I am not going to become the Thane of any other hold. What I do is collect bounties on bandits in the Whiterun hold. As Thane I think I should keep the peace in the hold.

Of course you can get a job as a bounty hunter in any hold (visit inns and hold Stewards) in Skyrim so you don't have to restrict yourself to just Whiterun. That's just how I do it.

As a Dunmer in a foreign land I wanted to use weapons I was familiar with (Elven) so I help Advar at his forge in Riverwood. I do this in order to eventually get enough skill to smith some Elven gear. I role-play it as a job by supplying him with weapons and armor looted from bandits when collecting bounties. I get materials from him to improve my skill in order to smith my personal arseanol. I look at it as a sort of apprentice fee - I buy the materials and get access to the forge.

I know I can forge at any blacksmith in Skyrim, this is just how I role-play it.

In addition to this I supply the Alchemist in Whiterun with exotic potions, to be read as expensive, also found during bounty collections and sometimes receive training but mostly just supply her and get paid for it.

Eventually I hope to raise my Alchemy skill to the point where I can create potions good enough to command a decent price and just work as an Alchemist.

Since I've found/kept a pickaxe and a woodcutters axe I can always get some gold chopping wood for mills and taverns or be a miner and sell found ore to blacksmith shops around Skyrim.

There's also hunting. Work as a hunter and supply towns with hides and meat.

Just some of my ideas on working in Skyrim.
