Keep 2 saves for each character just in case.

I pay attention to what I'm doing and don't save character 3 over character 1.
Really...how hard is it?

How is saving on console any different than PC? Do you not just either save over an existing save or select new save?

I keep all my saves on my PC, then move the one I wish to play on to the PS3. When I'm done, re-move it back overwriting the old file.

The game has a nasty habit of occasional overwriting manual saves with auto saves.
I know most say to turn autosaves off but I'd rather not lose massive amounts of progress because the game locks up and I forgot to save for sometime.

When I was on the Xbox, The "Cloud Saves" in XBL was rather handy. move your cherished characters there and they aren't in the way of the current ones.

I have 5 characters on my XBox. When you start a new save, the game creates a new save that starts at the beginning of the cart ride with a Nord named prisoner, save over that. Eventually, the Auto saves will start appearing, save over the file that has the numbers and not the AUTO labeled files. When you have a lot of saves like me, the save menu will look like this.
(Not actually a spoiler)
Spoiler
AUTO
AUTO
AUTO
371 (Save over this one)
256
198
119
57

The Auto saves will move to the top of the list if you travel through 3 cells (The game usually autosaves when you walk in or out of a building/dungeon/alternate dimension/etc.), and your most current save will always be right under the third autosave. The saves under the current saves are your other characters. The number indicate how many times you have manually saved. (I'm up to 437...)

I usually keep 7 normal saves and the 3 autos. That takes up one whole "page" and can save you a bit of time from having to check if your saving over the right character.
I'll give you an example:
______________________________
Auto Save
Auto Save
Auto Save
Save 6891
Save 6890
Save 6889
Save 6888
Save 6887
Save 6886
Save 6885
_______________________________

^ End of page. all my other characters are under that. It's quite effecient and keeps your characters relatively safe (from deletion).
When you want to switch to a new character, load the save you want to and just overwrite that characters saves and he'll be at the top now.
There shouldn't be a lag when trying to save unless if you have like 100+ saves on it.

Almost positive there's a mod for this on SkyrimNexus, search it up if you can.

On these games I keep three saves for each character, and if one messes up or bugs out I reload one of my two earlier saves.

More hours than I can count (I've played nothing else since 11-11-11)with about 5 current characters on the Xbox and the game has NEVER written over a manual save with an auto save.
I'm guessing that people are thinking that's what happened when in actuality they messed up and did it themselves.

I only have three characters. =p My main, a side character, and my dead is dead character. I only have one save file for each, except my main I generally have about three for him.

Actually, I've had an issue on the PS3 where I'd start a new character, and it would automatically save over my last manual save. Luckily my last auto save was just seconds before my last manual save, so I was able to restore it, but I found it really odd that it did that.

I turned off all autosaves, installed a mod from Nexus to seperate them by character, and save obsessively.

I had a bug I think before 1.1. or 1.2 that would not record my saves if I saved a certain number of times and the saves that would scroll down off the screen would disappear and I could not scroll down it was very aggravating before whatever patch fixed that, I could only have two characters because of that bug for a while.

That's as easy as to be careful of where do you save, and not relying on autosaves. But in PC and with each character using a different set of mods...now THAT's really difficult.

This is what I do too. I have seven well developed characters in the cloud waiting for DLC so I can play it in many ways. I think you have to be a Goldmember :) to use it.

I wish I could create a folder for each one but I guess il just be very careful on what saves what. Il just write down the name of the last save for each character. I foolishly made 684 saves once, not a good idea at all.
