Is iBuyPower legit?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 11:33 am

I've been looking at computers, and while I was looking towards just building my own for the first time for the savings, I stumbled across a brand called iBuyPower.

I was wondering if anyone's heard of these guys? Are they any good?

I'm looking at a couple of their computers, and they look like they're pretty good for the price, though I'm not 100% sure since I don't know parts that well.

Do these specs look good for around $1000(minus shipping, monitor, etc.)? How would Skyrim run on it? Anything that would set off red-flags for you in terms of specs?

iBuyPower has been around for at least a decade - they're fine. The build looks fine - the i5-2500k will really help with Skyrim, especially when overclocked.

Fixed. :) And I'm not planning on SLI right now, but I'll consider upgrading to a higher watt power-supply in case I want to in the future.

Thanks for the replies, I'm glad to hear that this company isn't a scam or anything(that was my main concern). Just to clarify, though: this set up should be able to run Skyrim on at least high comfortably, right?

Nah, you could pull SLI on a good 700 watt PSU.

That being said if you built it yourself you could save some money or get a better system, but they are a legit company.

I just purchased two PC's for my girls for sub $1000 that were better than that. I went a little more expensive on them for name brand parts.

EVGA Z68 MB
8 GIG Gskill Ram (not sure on timings, but gaming ram)
1 TB HD
EVGA GTX 560 vid cards
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
650 watt Corsair PS
core i7 2600 processor (8 core -vs- 4 for 2500 via hyperthreading)

IMO these are better systems then what you posted and I could get the price lower if I didn't go with EVGA / GSkill parts.

NEWEGG.COM is your friend ;)

Ibuypower is a legitimate website, I was going to buy a computer from them before I decided to build it myself. If you don't want to build your own computer, IBuyPower is an alright choice instead. The only thing that irks me a little about them is that they don't specifically say what brand they are using. "Corsair or major brand" for example, you don't know exactly what you are getting. Shouldn't be a problem though, just me being picky.

hmm....just thought of one more question:

I am planning on picking up Guild Wars 2 whenever it comes out, and I'm wondering whether or not I'd need to upgrade the Network Card in order to make that work?

These are the choices for the machine I'm looking at:

Onboard LAN Network (Gb or 10/100)
Intel Pro 10/100/1000 Network Card
Killer 2100 Gaming Network Card

Would the Onboard LAN Network be good enough for online gaming? Or should I spring for one of the other cards?

The only reason to spring for a separate nic (when not doing things that require multiple nics) is if your onboard nic lacks a feature you really want (jumboframe support, for example and a few others I can think of related to servers). Just wish they'd tell you whether it is a a gigabit or just fast ethernet rather than telling you it is one or the other (which is a "no durr"). Of course installing your own nic is child's play so there's no need to get a different one now anyway.

Like Deffy said above, go with the onboard networking unless you find an issue with it. If you do find an issue with it, you'll be able to buy one cheaply from Newegg, and you'll be able to see the exact specifications.

About that third one... I would stay away from anything that uses these words in the name:
-Killer
-Gaming (Sometimes)
-Industrial Strength
-Military Grade (Sometimes)
-Super
-Awesome
-Powerful
-The majority of adjectives that a thirdgrader would use to describe Spiderman

Basically, a good brand name doesn't need to use cheap adjectives to highlight the item they are pushing. It's not always the case, but I would read reviews carefully on an item with words like that in the name, it just screams "cheap Korean labor" to me.
