I just had an idea.

The story starts just before the great war, and you play as a survivor. People screaming, everyone fighting for food and etc.
It would be so cool. And the storyline could be for the main character trying to settle in a nice place, or something better.

Imagine, the beginning with News about the war, and then an alert of nuclear bombs, etc. That would be cool wouldn't it?

A. It would be Fallout 4, not 5.

B. No, not as a main entry in the series. As a spin-off title, sure. A neat idea. But not as a main entry.

C. This isn't really the appropriate section.

The bombs fall and you spend the entire game sitting in your make-shift bomb shelter eating Pork N' Beans and chugging iodine.

I'm pretty sure that Bethesda stated that each new Fallout game would advance the time line. I read somewhere that Obsidian wanted to set New Vegas earlier (closer to the war) and Bethesda told them it had to be set after Fallout 3.

I wouldn't mind playing it, but I think it would be better suited as a "spin-off" title, instead of one of the main (numbered) entries in the series.

Nice suggestion but I hate games that have a forward story line, then in one of the next games, it goes to the past.

would be an interesting spin off, perhaps you could be the brotherhood when they exit from mariposa after the bombs dropped? you know, while maxson is still alive? would be a little bit like stalker, but would definitely be fun to play

Fallout New Xmas...it's nuclear winter in the North pole, and you have to be careful who you side with...for instance, if you enter the Elves workshop wearing antlers and
a red nose, they will become hostile; however , wearing the Santa suit ( found in the chimney of Vault 25), then you can use the workbench to combine a Barbie,Rubiks cube and a spanner to make a fully functional sonic screwdriver !

Wrong section, and it wouldn't be Fallout 5, but a spin-off as people have stated. Like a prologue game. It would be kinda nice, I wouldn't want to just sit on my ass in a shelter though. Could be that you see bright lights and mushroom clouds in the night, striking down in major cities. Maybe you were out in the boonies, maybe on some hill to watch the sunset with your girlfriend on the hood of your Chryslus Highwayman, you get up to go get some wine from the backseat as your girlfriend notice things in the sky, like shooting stars and then there is this really bright light and your girlfriend screams. She looked directly into the flash and is now blind, but you had your head in the back of the car when it happens.

Then it may be like in Raul's story. Loads and loads of refugees are swarming out the countryside for food, water and supplies, and many get violent and has weapons, and when the food is gone, there is cannibalism and all that. It'd be kind of like the The Road aswell. I don't know what happens with your girlfriend though, maybe you get her into the car to drive her to the hospital, but as you get closer to the city (which of course also was hit by bombs) you see city in flames on the horizon, and thousands of refugees running your opposite way, and there is this powerful wind towards the city to feed the flames. Then later maybe she is killed and [censored], and you try to get to her or your own family but they are also gonna die or are already dead (maybe defend against looters), and then you notice that the radiation isn't killing you but everyone around you and you start to lose skin and hair (of course this process of ghoulification takes months or even years) and all that.

And of course there'll be some big main story, some goal you are striving for but I'm not story writers so I don't know. I can only imagine the atmosphere.
