Idle guard banter is Infuriating! Remove it!

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 11:49 pm

I would like to see the person, who wrote the guard banter lines and incorporated them into the game. Not only they (lines) are stupid and out of phase, but also they interfere (overwrite) quest-related dialogues, so the game dims quest related talk and shouts idiocy about sweetrolls and stuff. Great implementation of the banter!! Typical example is the "Missing in Action" quest, where you listen to the passing guards at the market square instead of the quest dialogue. Shut the guards up! Why, in heaven, ALL the people, who pass by, should tell you something?!

If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have had the whole arrow in the knee meme!

Some are annoying. For example, "You look tired friend. The Bannered Mare has beds for rent" yeah, it's 8 in the morning and I just woke up from an 8 hour sleep.

Sounds realistic, I'm usually incredibly tired just after waking up

It's background noise, not the Brothers Karamazov.

I agree. The first mod I installed was a mod to significantly cut down the amount of passing greetings. I had to do the same thing when I played Morrowind and Oblivion too.

I think it's a nice addition, but there needs to be more general greetings, and the special ones only come up every 10 times or so

I think if you're actively in a conversation with someone they shouldn't say anything, however, if you're just walking by they should keep how they are now.

I would say use subtitles (I always have the subtitles on so I can quickly skip through b/c I can read faster than the dialogue can go lol) but I've found that the idle walking by can screw up the subtitles too :/

No one likes these guard comments. But, admit it everyone who heard these the first time you played the game you liked them.

This. Although I still kinda like them.

I do like the arrow to knee kind of jokes, but I think they should be exclusive to bards, peasants, beggars... people you would expect to have that disposition. Belittling the guards with these funny, repetitive and childish lines is not very smart in my opinion, I preferred much more the monosilabic and hostile lines of the ordinators.

lol.

Anyway, to remove annoying dialogue, just take arrow, attach to knee.

So, how about banter by demand, for those who like it. You speak to a guard and he tells you something in return, but otherwise keeps silent, because for some few of those "good" comments, there is a ton of immersion breaking and insulting ones, like calling you a "thief" and telling you to keep your hands to yourself if your lockpick skill > 30. I've opened some locks in ruins. Why generic town guards would call me a thief? And things like that.

*sigh* I hate it when I agree with a post that is phrased in such a way that makes me wish I disagreed (i.e. something written in a way that makes me picture a four-year-old laying on his back having a full-blown temper tantrum - BUT I DON'T WANNA EAT MY VEGGIES!! I HATE you, MOM!). This issue does need to be addressed, especially since the journal entries give one so little to go on, and the dialogue is all you have. Otherwise I feel like I'm just following GPS coordinates to get to a destination I know nothing about.

That said, I honestly enjoy the chit chat. I just wish it didn't override quest-driven dialogue.

Edit: I repeated a repeated word.
