Ill by moonlight problem

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 8:14 am

Hi guys.

First of all, I'm really not sure which of the sub-forums is the right one to post this, so if this one isn't, please accept my apologies and I'd welcome a mod to move it to the right place :)

I was caught in a bug with this quest and don't really have any saves I'd want to roll back to, they're all a bit far in my character's past and by the time I noticed the problem, all the relevant auto-saves were already overwritten.

So here's the problem: When I talked to Sinding in the jail cell, I took the cursed ring, but he failed to escape the jail. I killed the white stag, talked to the spirit, but the werewolf remains in the cell. I went to the cave and the hunting party is slain... although there's no werewolf in there, of course.

All in all, I pretty much gave up on the quest, it's bugged silly and since I'm not too worried about the achievement, I want to move on... but I'm stuck with the bloody ring! I want to wear my heavy armor skill buffing ring again, don't want this cursed thing! Any suggestions on how to get rid of it?

Without being able to go back before the bug, you may be stuck unless you're playing on a PC (where the console can repair a lot of damage).

Can't stress this enough: Rotate through about 10 save files, back up newest ones daily.

Edit: From the UESPwiki:

Spoiler
When leaving the jail after accepting the quest, if you don't wait for Sinding to transform and escape, he may remain there even after he is supposed to be in the Grotto. It may be possible to complete the quest normally by killing him in the jail. However, if you kill him in the cell and cannot reach his body to skin it, there is no way to enter the cell to take it.

First off welcome :)

Second the only I know to get the ring off is to randomly turn into a werewolf. After that your character will be naked and then you can put on any ring you want.

Try this: go to the cave where the werewolf should be and open the console (if you are on pc), then try these commands:

prid 0006C1B8 [enter]
moveto player [enter]

If it works, you'll be able either to help him or to fight him. I offer no guaranty there though. ;)

Well thank you all for the tips :)

ladyonthemoon I tried your console commands and it did indeed bring Sinding in werewolf form to me... but he didn't do anything, didn't change the ring. I didn't slay the hunters, I admit, they were already dead when I got there... so maybe that's why.
I tried the next thing and killed him... but there was no option to skin him. Not sure how I should skin him even :)
Think the quest is definitely bugged for me, still I'm willing to try any further tips :)

The good news is I hadn't done the Companions quest that turns you into a werewolf, so following the above tip by GASH505 I figured it was the right time to take it and at least I got the ring off my finger, if not off my inventory :) Thanks for the tip too :)

Sinding doesn't change the ring, Hircine does when you exit Bloated Man's Grotto. Assuming you chose to protect Sinding.

That doesn't really help though I guess.

Is there a console command that can respawn the hunters ? Or perhaps bring the dead one's back to life ? Perhaps that would work.

That would be the perfect solution yes. Might be a bit daunting to dig out, though :)

Okay, I'm sorry it didn't really work. The only thing I can imagine is that you must load a save you did before beginning the quest.
