IllusionAlterationRestoration Only

I'm doing a similar build but with a bit of Conjuration so I can raise dead enemies, it's a lot of fun. I'm only leveling Alteration so I can access paralyze-- with a follower, minions, and Illusion spells I don't get hit so the armor spells don't really matter.

Vampires are hardly mindless.
This is true. I guess the problem is that Vampires, skeletons and dwemer constructs are lumped together as a class for the Illusion perk when they really have little in common. A little shortcut for convenience, apparently.

That, plus I have never really felt the need to use Illusion against the undead or automatrons. Seems strange that they would be affected by Illusion magic no matter how high your skill. I'd rather see a conjuration spell to "command" undead (like the command daedra spell) than use Illusion against the undead. Makes more sense lore wise. And I see no lore justification for using Illusion magic agaisnt machines. Illusion is supposed to affect the mind. How does it work against mindless undead like draugr or the machines you find in Dwemer ruins?

the only actually mindless undead are the corpses raised by necromaners and skellys, ghosts are spirits so they still have their mind even if sumoned by someone, draugr are actually alive in the sense that liches are alive, vampires are vampires and i think thats all of the undead

I think the gray area here is that people need to register that there's a difference between thralls and sentient undead. Illusion spells don't work on daedra/automatons/undead because their mind's anatomy is different than the natural beings of Tamriel. Daedra are from the plane of Oblivion, automatons function based on whatever magic/technology the dwarves used to sustain them, and the undead are sustained by evil sorts of magic or curses or what-have-you.
