Imagine how fun/awesome it would have been...

If they had forsaken tradition and made armor customization less macro in New Vegas. I'm thinking like, clothes, under armor, and then separate slots for nearly everything, like even more than TES. Because in the wasteland it would be so fun having to like find stuff and strap it to yourself as armor and over time build up a full armor suit. You know, find a couple tire shoulder pads, find a worn out kevlar vest, a football helmet, some leather gloves, a cool belt, some military boots.

It is a good idea but sounds something a little much for them to implement as you would need to think of all the armour durability of each piece. But hell with all the weapon mods and ammo types which have given the shooting part of combat some more variety I would like to see more armour variety.

I would wear the flesh of a supermutant, then the mutants wouldnt attack me.

There is a mod for Fallout 3 called Tailor Maid that lets you take certain parts of certain armors and mix and match them. I liked it quite a bit. the only problem is that it wasn't integrated very naturally. Maybe we will get a feature like this in a future Fallout game or a DLC.

Exactly, like it's clear that raider and even leather armor or SM armor are supposed to look pieced together from scraps, but what, did they all happen to stumble upon the exact same stuff? That and piecing together a suit of armor is so much more strategic and rewarding than just swapping out one 1-piece suit for another. Just imagine the kind of cool stuff you could have too, like a wearable steel plate, reduced speed (duh), but almost bullet proof when being shot in the chest. And cool perks could be made too, like:

Walking Tank

END 5
STR 9
Mobility reductions from heavy armor pieces are halved.

Fashion Aware
CHAR 6
PER 6
1.5x the positive effects when wearing symmetric (2 of the same piece) armor. IE two tire shoulder pads, or two hockey goal-keeper shin pads.

Well New Vegas was made on top of Fallout 3's work, so I'm not surprised something like that isn't in New Vegas. Hopefully we'll see something like that in Fallout 4. I hope they make it like Morrowind's where we could also add shoulder paldrons.

It would be cool for some sort of special armor building quest but not something that would happen with every part. It'll get boring or annoying to find one part that doesn't fit with the rest but has better statistics. The outfit would look too messy and cluttered.

Well Fallout 3's work was on top of Oblivion's, so there's no reason for this not to be possible. I mean, they could even not include any, and just hard code more empty slots for us and let the modders do all the work, like seriously, I'd finally get my Blender skills up to par and figure out f****** Nifskope just to make a bunch of awesome scrap armor pieces. Too bad the game's already gone gold. :/

I mean come on they have slots for head bands and earrings and necklaces and rings and crap but not the basics? Come on.

Bethesda needs to add modding capabilities to the console versions of their games, like Unreal Tournament 3.
You could make the mods on PC, and transfer them to your console.
This would make my play-throughs of these games so much longer, god I hate svcky PCs...

Nah, not even, it would just mean that you'd have to hold on to it and wait 'till you find other similar stuff if you're too self conscious, lol.

I miss the Oblivion armor/clothing system, like it better than the full outfit FO3 had going.
But the game has been made so it's a suggestion for fallout 4.

I'm assuming it was engine capabilities and maybe clipping issues that made it hard for armor to go over other armor. It was quite obvious from the art book of F3 and from just the look of the suit that the Recon Armor was meant to be worn underneath the Power Armor. (Although I fail to see that there would be any clipping issues with those two together but who knows.) What I loved about Morrowind was that you could really layer up your outfits. And once you became good at enchanting you could pretty much create an invincible character. I know there are people that say .. "if you want to play dress up.. go play the sims.".. but I really love decking out my character and as much character customization as possible. It adds a sense that you've really created a unique character to play with.

For the first point, they could just make under armors basically hug the original "naked" mesh, and use textures to make them pop out a little more.

And I've got to agree, it's like house mods that let you set up the furniture, it's just really rewarding to feel like you've made something unique. To put time into something and be rewarded for it.

True, but in a way, isn't that the point? In Fallout, it's a world where you could be shot dead at any second. That, and it's a world where you take what you can get, or die. You cobble and construct things for functionality, not fashion. It's all about surviving that .308 round to the chest dude. Not about the look of your armor.

I like how they did it in Fallout 3. It was simple you had 1 armor, 1 headgear, and possibly one glasses slot depending on the headgear. If they did add more armor slots thats going to require more data which that data then could be going towards more quests or more dungeons.

Assuming the models are approximately the same, just cut up, making each smaller but more numerous, the additional overhead would be incredibly minor, at best. Item definitions are tiny, when compared to, say, voice acting, or even level definitions.

I like it better when 1 item is a whole outfit. Makes inventory managment better and your clothes always match.

But I feel like it wouldn't have been a huge amount more of work to just split up every armor outfit into like 8 pieces, you know? And it could make for some really fun stuff, like components that give you special bonuses or that have certain penalties, or that grant abilities, cool stuff like that, and you could mix and match and have them play off each other to make really strong combinations, or stuff that looks really good and that you know is original and now what every other player is wearing in their game.
