Impossible to stay away from main quests!

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 11:34 am

So i get to Riverwood, talk to Gerda, then decided i dont want my character to become Dragonborn. So i start off to Windhelm to join up with the Stormcloaks, do the first two quest in that questline. The third has me go to Whiterun(#1 place for me to avoid) and deliver a certain item to Jarl Balgruuf(#1 person for me to avoid).I tell him i have something for him from Ulfric and he says "Ulfric can wait, i have a dragon problem to deal with." So then inevitably i have to talk to the Court Wizard. I pull up the quest log and under the quest for the Stormcloaks it says "Assist Jarl Balgruuf with the dragon problem".

So i was wanting to really get into RPing with this character and this kinda shots down the roleplay i had in mind. I wanted to roleplay a Stormcloak Soldier who retires after the war and goes on a hiatus, but the then feels something deep inside calling him back to the life he once knew. He knows he is no longer needed as a soldier so he becomes a sellsword for anyone who has the coin.

But back on topic, why should i have to do a main quest in order to complete a side quest?

lol i agree the first part isn't avoidable because a lot of other events interconnect with that first part however afterwards you can do whatever you want without worrying. problem solved.

In skyrim sometimes some quests are inaccessible unless you have completed a certain part of the main quest, you will also find that on one character you may find different quests ti another character this is because some quests are based upon different skill levels.

Because a dragon terrorizing the Jarls land is more important that a power hungry murderer . As far as I know the civil war is the only quest line that takes you back to the main quest.

Fun part is that you can fight with the Imperials without interfering.
But it IS Possible.. i did not start my main quest until level 25 or something with my thief..

What do you mean? On my Legionaire RP, I had to kill the dragon before Balgruff would speak about the Civil War.

Compromise bro.

Roleplay the reluctant warrior who agrees to help him with his dragon problems, then when you find out you are the dragonborn, roleplay that you are too uninterested in such fancy tales and you'd rather go back to the more earthly matters, e.g. the Civil War. When you're character is retired, he can tell tales about how he had to fight a dragon during his tour of duty and was accused of being such a thing as a "Dragonborn".

The main quest and civil war quests are the only things that are semi-tied together. Everything else you can do without interference. One could even argue that the Civil War is part of the MQ...

For my very first character I decided I would just do the civil war. After exploring for a few levels I launched into the civil war quests...and immediately hit a brick wall. My roleplay concept was not possible in this game. Not good. Not good at all.

I had to abandon that character. It did not make a good first impression, let me tell you. Fortunately Thomas Kaira is already at work on a mod to fix this (and other quests that similarly railroad the player).

These are the kinds of complaints that I call baseless. You have to do some of the quest to get the whole thing going. It's like an hours worth of play in 200 hours of playing.

FACT: I still have the part of the main quest that wants me to go up to the Greybeards. I have yet to do that and I'm about 50 hours in.

Seriously, some of the parents of these complainers really spoiled them.

When I make my Wood Elf I'm not doing anything. No MQ, Civil War, Companions, CoW, etc.). Well, except the Thieves Guild and DB. But I'm pretty sure they don't interfere with the MQ.. do they?

Want to avoid MQ, just go to Whiterun and not to Riverwood and take the coach to Riften. Do a few fetch quests and the Argonian woman who needs a heal potion will start a bad skooma quest. Do a couple brief dungeon crawls for the Jarl and she will sell you a house and make you Thane, Thus avoiding the MQ all together and getting a house. This is what I am doing on my second character. Mainly so I can enjoy exploring the game world without fire breathing over grown cliff racers everywhere....lol

I disabled invulnerable NPC's in the console the second I made my character and I ended up killing everyone in whiterun, including the Jarl himself so I don't have to worry about it.

Honestly, playing a chaotic evil character really adds more depth to the game than in previous ES titles.

You only need to complete part of the main quest line and then you don't have to worry about it at all if you don't want to. Yeah, having the dragons around is kind of annoying at times, but you don't have to speak to the Greybeards and you can complete other quests. The game is designed for you to complete part of the main quest, unless you go out of your way to avoid it. It's really not that bad. Do what you have to, and then go do what you want to. But, if you want to do parts of the story, sometimes you need to complete other things first. Nothing wrong with that. :) I would assume the same position as the Jarl in Whiterun. Protecting my people from dragon attacks is far more important than the civil war. When I get that handled, then we can discuss the war.

Well, thanks for the heads up anyways!

I'm only doing the main quest with my main character, and he won't become a "Thane" and a dragon slayer until he makes a name for himself haha.

I wasn't a fan of the fact that you basically HAVE to start the main quest for the house in Whiterun and to turn in some minor quests.

If you skip talking to the person in Riverwood can you do them?

I seem to remember Todd saying something about how we could play the way we wanted. Apparently that was a lie.

Or maybe you're just crazy for wanting to role play in a series that was known for letting us make our characters whatever we wanted them to be.

If you're on PC, this will probably be fixed.

Note the Main Quest requires you to join two of the four guilds of Skyrim, another of those things you can't avoid. Even if you're a magic-hating Redguard warrior.

They didn't do a certain charcters voice acting for a certain role. Play through the chain and you'll find out

@General You can avoid it, it has been proven and said atleast 50 times on these forums. You should have looked it up before you did it.
