Improved AI in 1.6 patch?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 4:14 pm

Hey

1.6 change log says "Improved AI Pathfinding"; I was just wondering if anyone has noticed any changes to AI when playing Skyrim after installing 1.6? Are NPCs less clumsy (like when they walk infront of rocks and the like but dont move - if you get me).

Also, do you think Beth will release another patch for the PC version to fix the remaining bugs? Or after like 8 patches do you think its unlikely?

I noticed that enemy NPC's are more alert to your attacks. For instance, I shot an arrow at a mudcrab and it dodged it. Same goes for a couple of bandits I encountered. They also use their shields more too.

If anything my followers are dumber. I have to return to places I've been to find them nearly every day.

Heap now they walk around stuff instead of the clumsy walk forward at an angle an slowly come around the side, note however this now just means you can pull a bent hill around trees.

While not directly related, or maybe it is, but I noticed that when I loaded a character from pre 1.6 that a lot of stuff would sorta aggro but never attack. The ones that really stood out were wolves and a dragon over the plains between whiterun and the area around redorans retreat.

I recently noticed that the AI had improved, and I didn't even realize there was a patch. The AI is still ridiculously clumsy, sadly.

I can still avoid them easily by running around tables, rocks etc. They also tend to get stuck on the corners of tables, rocks, etc. I can also avoid them easily by jumping to odd places.

They do seem to be somewhat smart, such as backing away into a different room when their attacks cannot hit/reach me. They don't tend to get stuck in odd places as much as they used to, but they still do.

I'm doing my second Novice Destruction/Restoration Spells/No Potion only run-through, so I'm pretty good at testing how dumb the AI actually is.

Enemies were dodging my arrows before 1.6. It was odd, seeing a mudcrab moving to the left or right to avoid my arrow, as I wouldn't picture them being so agile.

Hopefully more updates are coming, as 1.6 has messed up many mods, like the unofficial patch. As that mod has around 100 fixes or more, I can't imagine playing without it.

lol, modders will have to update the patch to fit in with 1.6 i guess.

This would Create unoffical patch 1.1

Seems like the stores and stuff open when they should better now and the NPC's are more active in towns... I noticed that I use to "wait" and the doors still took some time to open up. Seems the triggers are more accurate now, but that could just be me.

Yeap as they will take the shortest path to you they'll will follow you around and around the tree so long as you don't put to too much distance between them and you, or else they will stop and go the other way....... Sort of like playing with a dog.

I've noticed two things.

1) When an enemy is spotted or engaged, my followers seem to respond quicker... I don't know if I'm imagining things.

2) Since the patch my follower(s) haven't gotten lost on me. It used to happen to me all of the time. If I didn't stop and wait for them to catch up or make sure they were following me, sometimes they'd just disappear and wouldn't reappear until walking through a load portal. I also noticed that they will avoid traps if I do.

I have noticed one glitch though. Just experienced it tonight. My follower and I were taking care of business at Shearpoint and did our dance with Krosis. Well, after he was defeated, my follower was crawling around in the "I'm retiring from the battle" stance. I used Healing Hands on him and walked around for a bit, but he'd just keep crawling. I eventually had to fast travel to Whiterun to bring him back to his old self again... but, when I did (unrelated), two enemy mages *teleported* with me and were slain by the guards.

Weird.

Same thing is happening to me. Many of my enemies just stand there till I get really close? He is a very high level sneak though, so maybe thats what it is?

I think that patch note means that they added an AI behavior that NPC's will execute when the player is on a horse.

In this patch you can actually follow a rabbit or any other animals and they will take
you to a fairyland where the grass are greener and the women smell of honey but don't
attract bears.

Unless that means every creature within the area is going to beat a path to me the instant I get on that horse, no I did not noticed any improvement in NPC AI. I have always had them dodge, run away if you hit them, or find a way to try and get to you if you were trying to be smart and stay out of reach. I had a courier last night get stuck on a rock, so they do not seem any smarter at avoiding obstacles.

I'm not sure if I can attribute any of this to the patch but when fighting last night, I was using my bow on Falmer and it seems to me that my follower didn't put his head right where I was aiming ALL THE TIME. I was able to get shots off at the actual enemy. Sometimes he would be aggressive and move right in and sometimes he would hang back with me while I conjured something in the enemy direction. Come to think of it, that might have been when I conjured and then moved back around a corner so there was no line of sight. :tes:
