Sell it to a fence, and then buy it back.
It worked on my ps3, i am walking around in noble clothes without risking to lose it when i pay my bounty.

Some people have posted in the past that you can drop an item and an NPC will pick it up and hand it to you and that'll clear it, but the few times I've tried it NPCs have not picked the items up. :P

This is generally how being a Thief works... lol

You steal something, sell it to a fence, then it's "clean".

To get it back from a fence costs money.

I use the Dragonreach fencers barrel. It is vanilla, it always works and you don't have to pay anything.

This is... old news. And it's kinda worked this way since Morrowind.

most barrels turn stuff stolen when your follower takes it. Which one are you using? I was only aware of the one in dragonreach.

The hidden Dawnstar chest works for me too. I use it to unglitch items picked up by followers, although it's difficult to resist helping myself to other goodies in there.

This, sealing to a fence, doesn't work for the special Statue of Dibella you steal in Riften. It only loses the tag temporarily. But if you drop it the tag comes back. Another unrelated bug to that item is you can't place the damn thing in a house without it being somewhere else when you re-enter the house.

That happens with everything, unless you drop it on the floor first.
Though I remember I had the statue fall off a table before my very eyes. Strange.

Doesn't work for weapons. I tried with the Blades swords and they were still marked stolen

This doesn't work for a number of items, not just weapons.

I did however get the flag removed on Blades swords, that was never an issue.

Oh, I just steal the one from Maven and the one from the Argonian that respawns (the statue respawns...not the Argonian). I've victimized Haelga enough.

The only way I've been able to make anything stay in place (insects in jars, Dibella Statues, et al) is to make sure I've cleared it a large enough 'pad'. Like I have to make sure there are no tankards, candlesticks, sweetrolls, etc too close to the item I place.

This old trick been around since Morrowind. It is actually one of the very first tricks I've learned about TES series. Whenever you steal an item, just sell it to someone and buy it back to make sure you wont lose via Guards. Works in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim.

Interesting. I actually didn't know that. Regardless that I've played TES since Arena. Of course, I never steal anything, that might explain my obtuseness.....

But when you buy it back, you pay full retail so you lose money.

My Morrowind Guy has 852,853 Gold Pieces.
My Oblivion Guy has 452,980 Gold Pieces.
My Skyrim Guy has 231,563 Gold Pieces.

I think it doesn't matter if I lose money or not.

Yeah, that's the price for laundering stuff. I have 3 pieces of gear so I can sell stuff for 83% of the value shown on the description card so it takes some of the sting out - so I only lose 17% in the laundering process. :P

Also, there is a way to sell stuff higher than what you buy it for in Morrowind. Not in Oblivion and Skyrim, as far as I know.

Frankly I've found if I put stolen items in a box tell a follower to empty the contents the stolen flag will vanish.

You're probably right about that because I'd theorized that I could sell something for more once I find a Fortify Speech (although none is mentioned on UESP so it may not exist) piece to disenchant. I want to make Fortify Speech and Fortify Barter gear, but people have said that there is a cap in Skyrim so maybe 100% is the best I can do. :P

There is NO cap for Fortify Skills Gear in Skyrim but I still think it isn't possible in Skyrim. I do know it is in Morrowind cause I've made it so everything costs 1 Gold Piece for me to buy while everything I sell costs the barter's full gold inventory XD.

No, I meant I've been told there's a cap on for how much I can sell something...like I can't sell stuff for 110% of it's value as reported on the description card. ...or can I? :o

I can't seem to remove the Stolen tags from any of the stuff I got from the Museum of the Mythic Dawn or the Butcher's Journal you find in the killer's home.
