Ingame lore info

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:21 am

Which is why they should have a codex like the Mass Effect series, like I posted above.

Having all that information scattered around the world just isn't practical.

This is true, and the Mass Effect codex is wonderful as I use it extensively. However, I still go to the Bioware forums for
clarification and what-not after a game session.

We're here ... now ... on this forum, exchanging ideas and discussing in-game lore and such.

My question is, how is this (codex or not) immersion breaking?

The game isn't close to cover 50% of the places. I want to know the story of the cave I'm going into. Or at least a vage story with some truth behind it. There should be some books about it hidden in Skyrim. Or at least an official library. Going on the www to learn a story is immersion breaking to me. IMO.

You want them to explain to you the story of a cave?

Don't you think that's a bit over the top? It's kind of a crazy request since most caves and dungeons don't have stories.

I'm not a fan of meta-gaming elements and if I want lore info there's always the Imperial Library website.

Every cave is a bit over the top, I agree. But you see my point. Things don't pop out of nowhere and they must have a story.

So the issue is that you WANT them to invent new for lore every single location in the game and have it all explained to you in game as well?

That's never going to happen.

Important stuff? In my book every piece of Skyrim-lore is important.
And it doesn't even cover half of it.
Okay, now I'm really interested. Which half is missing? Titles, links, if you could.
Which cave has a story that can't be found in the game?

I'm not saying EVERYTHING is in-game, but still...

Actually, they don't. There are hundreds of caves in Skyrim and most of them are just holes in the ground without any info behind them. Make up your mind, do you want existing lore implemented into the game or do you want the devs to write new books about every single location you visit? Old lore in-game or new lore altogether?

Note to self: why am I discussing virtual books knowing that I have to wake up totally early tomorrow? I'm going to sleep. Goodnight all.

When did I say that? Some places doesn't have a lore and I think it should. And it would be nice to read it in-game. I don't know what you are talking about.

Caves and the artifact, people, creatures does not just appear in the cave. There must be a reason for why they chose to live in that cave. As for links... There are plenty of caves and etc that is not covered by a book in-game. Everything has a story. And a story is something that is not created now. But if they haven't written this, they should write it. IMO of course.

Snip
Like in Assassin's Creed, when you come across a place or person/name of interest you could just hit the select button and you will be directed to a page containing the lore about that place or person.

I'm sorry but that is rubbish. Although that system may work in the ludicrous "RPG" Assassins Creed "games" it most certainty will not work in a TES game. It ruins immersion more than anything.

Maybe you can find it in a book at the end of a cave..?

You are contradicting yourself in every other post.

Edit: You just did it again.

I was merely saying that the lore should already have been created and if it's not they should write the extra lore (which I think they have created but not put in the game) to make it fit with the Skyrim-world. Happy?

I think we have a problem here...

You started this thread with an observation that lore can be found in the Internet, but not in the game. This is a valid complaint. I see how some people may find it annoying to have to check the wikis every time they have a question about history and whatnot.
Then you went on to say that a random cave with a group of random bandits inside doesn't have a story and a book with that story at the end of the cave. And that this should be fixed.

The problem is, most of locations DON'T HAVE ANY STORY. They're just places - a tower abandoned long ago, nobody even remembers who used to live there. A cave that housed only skeevers and bears before it was overridden by the Falmer. A city built in stone left empty and silent when all of its inhabitants suddenly vanished thousands of years ago.

No, maybe I was wrong. These places have stories. Quiet, long-forgotten stories that nobody thought were epic enough to be written down. Mundane stories of life and death, with no memory left behind.

The books you want will never be written, can never be written. They're not what the game is about. If you want to read them, you need to write them yourself and mod them in. Because why not? It's a fictional world and we can create our own myths. They might not be official, but they will be your stories, and who's to decide that they're not true? There are no sources to say otherwise...

Right, that's what I asked you three times.

Anyways, that's highly unlikely and not a very good idea IMO.

Do it when the CK is released, that's what it's for.. to customize the game to your liking.

Yes, but why the Imperial Library? Maybe a standard book lying at the end of a cave telling the story of the place? I love to read the lore but I want to learn it in the game, not on the www.
So someone manages to conveniently drop a book at every site of interest, giving the history and other information about location "Whatever"? That wouldn't work for me. I'd be spending too much time wondering who is roaming around, dropping books everywhere.

I'd stick with reading the books I find in the bookshelves and other places, whenever that might be. I still prefer the Imperial Library, if I want to do a lot of reading.

I expect it to be a part of the lore. If they're missing something they need to supplement the existing lore. It's already there. It's not old lore (if Bethesda did their job).

Well, then simply increase the books you are able to read in-game. Like in the Arcaneum or whatever it's called. That would be a very simple, but effective solution.

The bottom line is, I believe the in-game books already have all the players need to know. It's impossible to put the whole Imperial Library into Skyrim.

I think the Imperial Library is already in the game. There are more books in this game than in any of the others I have played.

And are there really up to 56 volumes of the "Songs of Pelinal"? Been looking for more but only find a few of the same. :P

What if instead of bringing up a comprehensive list of all lore you can only see what your character has already read/heard?
For instance if at any point you have picked up a book about the current place/thing/monster or a character has told you about it then that info will be instantly recalled.
This would give a new incentive to finding books and talking with people and also do away with having to carry stacks of books around or remembering exactly what info was in what book or was said by what person.
