Intallation problems

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:42 am

I bought the game the other day and I am having big problems getting it to install on my PC. I am running Windows 7 with a 1gig graphics card. I got around a few problems by altering my firewall settings and disabling my virus checker for ten minutes. Finally after several hours of messing about and too many reboots to count I finally got the game to load onto my hard drive from the DVD and I managed to get the game started. I now have just over an hours game play in it. I had to go out for a while so I saved the game and closed the program and shut the computer down. When I tried to load the game a few hours later, I was told that there was a fault and that I needed to reinstall the game. Since then I still have big problems. For instance it tells me that I shouldn't try to run it in compatibility mode. I changed the compatibility to Windows 7 but it still gives me the message so I need to cancel it.

Finally I managed to get Steam to work properly, but because I have deleted the game from my PC, I need to put the game back onto it. When I click install in Steam however, it starts to download the game online instead of taking the easy option of getting it from the DVD that is sitting waiting patiently in my BluRay drive. How can I get Steam to take the easy option of transfering the game from the DVD instead of giving me a massive online download of over 5 gig in one go that will probably take a week.

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies folks. I know what you mean regarding the "Welcome to the wonderful world of Steam :(" comment. Its very :( :( :( :( :( at the moment.

I think, fingers crossed, that Steam has actually loaded ok onto my computer now. The problem I'm having and which doesn't seem to be covered in the links you posted is the fact that Steam is trying to download the game for me from online instead of grabbing it from the DVD. Would dragging the game files from the DVD into the Steam folder make Steam play it from the files transfered from the DVD?

Cheers.

Pause the download, delete the files, pop in the disc, run the install from the disc's menu, and then let it perform the Steam check.

Edit:

Eh, let me amend that. You need to choose "Delete Local Content" instead of deleting the files yourself. That will tell Steam to uninstall it from your computer. Just replace the second step. Sorry for the confusion I may have caused.

Thanks DS. I figured I needed Delete Local Content before I saw your edit. It's installing from disk now. Fingers crossed I can play it ok and that I don't get anymore problems next time I start my computer after a shutdown.

Thanks again.

It don't really matter, the install from Disc, since Steam will update it anyway, negating all of your gain for installing from DVD as it will take just as long if not longer. Yeah, down W/Steam.

Uh, that's not true at all.

The updates are less than 1 GB, the game is around 5 GB. Unless you've got a good Internet connection, the disc will be faster.

When I installed the game from the DVD it said that installation was complete, but then it also said that the game was 95% downloaded so then I had to wait for that data to download, so I'm guessing that the extra 5% was updates.

Here's the really annoying thing though. I played the game for over an hour yesterday after the updates etc had been installed and it played fine. I had to go to work though so I saved the game and closed the program and turned the computer off. I just turned the computer on again just now and I got a message telling me that there is a problem with Steam and that I have to re-install it. Crazy! :swear:

About ten minutes ago I clicked on the DVD and got the thing saying re-install, so I clicked it and got the licensing agreement box to click which I did. Nothing has happened since.
