Intel or AMD?

Post » Sat Dec 03, 2011 8:25 am

Hey. I was just wondering what your opinions are when it comes to the main idea of Intel or AMD (and if you want, the preferred GPU) and why. Iam just curious. also, another important question, again optional, but due to the huge amount of spam i get from saying it is optional, you must also include input on your fave processor. Moving on, the question number 2 is again, bacon should be crispy or floppy (or in old any's case) pliable?

Whichever one offers me the best performance, and the features I want at any given time (right now that's Intel for AES-NI and VT-c, though I've yet to play with the second)

GPU is Nvidia, but if AMD had as good of Linux drivers, that would be the same as above.

From what i heard from my sources (which is not much at that, feel free to correct) it is that I prefer AMD for the fact that almost every time I wanna upgrade my processor, I do not need to get a new mobo, like intel, whose processor series tend to last for a lot shorter of a time frame.

I agree, it all depends on what you use your computer for.

I use my hardware for Folding@Home, so Intel i7's and nVidia Fermi all the way.

So far in all my builds (all two of them) I've used Intel and Nvidia products, but have no real reason why, I've been happy with them and see no reason to change yet.

If it has to be bacon, then I'd prefer crispy, but I'd much rather have sausage patties instead.

AMD has almost always been the better value for a budget system. Price/performance they win, imho. If you want flat-out performance though, Intel is currently king (Until Zambezi - then we'll have to wait and see).

Whatever's best for the price/performance to be honest. For the past few years, I've mainly had Intel CPUs and AMD video cards.

Just chose whatever's better in your opinion. Would be sad to chose just because you like the company.

For price and purely gaming purposes, AMD CPUs are good. But for high performance, though a higher price, Intel would be my choice. Getting the 2600k soon.
For GPUs, I have usually went with AMD......(Though I do have an extremely outdated Nvidia 4000 series powering video on my FTP server.)

I agree with everyone else. AMD tends to give better price-performance ratios, but Intel has more powerful high-end processors if you have the money for them. I saw an Intel hex-core on Newegg a while back that costs over a grand, more than most entire PCs. Extreme example, but there you go.

Just go for whatever will give you the best performance in your price range, the manufacturer isn't really a factor.

And this.

I have heard and experienced (well, I think...) the idea that intel processors run so hot you could make bacon on them... Yum...

Depends entirely on your budget. If you can only afford a Phenom II X4, then AMD. If your budget allows for more, Intel.

Also, I like to bake my bacon on a cookie sheet with a baking rack on it so quite a bit of the grease drips off, it gets nice and crispy without being crumbly, and it doesn't shrink too much and become deformed like in a pan. I also brush it with a mixture of real maple syrup and Dijon mustard every 10 minutes or so while doing this, and after flipping the bacon.

Probably was true with the NetBurst architecture, but anything from the past few years should be a lot better.

That would actually create a very nice glaze and probably taste great on...Well...Anything. Seriously, anything.

On topic - I prefer AMD if only for the price. I also find an AMD processor very easy to overclock, though I've never tried to overclock an Intel. My AthalonII is at 3.5gHz.

I've had the opposite experience. I could never get more than a tiny OC on AMD, but I'm running a Q6600@3.4 and an i7 930@4.1, and several others somewhere in between.. I started switching to Intel over 3 years ago. Things may have changed since then.

Before I started Folding, I always built my game systems with second tier AMD processors. It gave me the most bang on a limited budget. If I wasn't Folding, I'd probably still be building with AMD, but moved up to top tier.

I'm in the "whatever meets my needs the best" camp. I'm not faithful to component brands.

If I were buying a CPU right now it'd be the Intel i5 2500k. For my money it's a better value than AMD's higher-end offerings (I engage in more CPU-hungry activities than just gaming) and overclocks like a beast. Heck, even for gaming the i5 2500k at stock speed is significantly faster than the Phenom II x4 980 and is only $30 more. I think I'd rather slice $30 off my build elsewhere to take advantage of Sandy Bridge and the Z68 chipset. We'll have to see what happens once AMD's Bulldozer shows up.

For the record, Intel's CPUs used to dissipate a lot of heat, but that hasn't been the case for some time. My last two Intel CPUs (a Core2 Duo E8400 and a Core2 Quad Q9550) ran very cool, even on a 500-600 MHz overclock.

On GPUs...it depends on what it's for. If it's just for gaming I go for whatever I get the best price/performance out of, although I do factor heat, noise, and power consumption in a bit. If it's for just about anything but gaming I go nVidia.
