Interesting multi-GPU observation

Post » Thu Jun 02, 2011 6:34 pm

I have an ATI 5970 which I overclock to 950Mhz/1100MHz. I generally run the demo on 'gamer' settings at 1280x1024 to ensure the framerate stays above 60fps.

I noticed a strange issue this evening when entering windowed mode.

Fullscreen @ 1280x1024 'hardcoe'
screenshot
GPU usage: 100%/100%
FPS: 75

Windowed @ 1280x1024 'hardcoe'
screenshot
GPU usage: 100%/0%
FPS: 60

FS-Windowed-Fullscreen @ 1280x1024 'hardcoe'
screenshot
GPU usage: 100%/100%
FPS: 145 (93% higher)

Leaving fullscreen reduced FPS by only 20%, even though the entire desktop is being rendered and one of the GPUs is switched off.

After re-entering fullscreen, I took another screenshot from elsewhere to check that the 'hardcoe' settings were still active. Here are the 'god rays' shining through some trees:
screenshot

I'm running on 11.2 drivers. In conclusion, it appears that the multiple-gpus in this card are not being fully utilized, even though GPU usage shows at 100%/100%.

Also, there seems to be areas where there is a bit of choppy rendering, even though framerate stays well above 60FPS.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I'm also running a 5970. I guess I've seen similar performance (although I'm at 1920x1200) for my resolution.

Tomorrow I'll see if the fullscreen switching makes any difference. I thought crossfire was working fine as radeon pro showed full scaling with the crossfire bar overlay.

i think the demo has poor suport for crossfire. why? i get better performance running 1 of my 4850s than using both. crossfire setup gets 43.1 avg on 1360*768 and 1 card gets 46.3 avg but the finsihed game is goin to be better optimized and have better multi gpu suport i belive.

Actually, no.

However, I just downloaded radeonpro, forced AFR, turned off HRD rendering and I can now play at 1920x1080@hardcoe with 120fps average!

Yes I have 3 PC's here My tri 580 @ 5760 had problems till I loaded the profile now locked @ 60 vsync enabled. My xfired 5850(bios flashed to 5870) 1920 runs @ 45 and my 5870 @ 1680 runs @ 50 so I would say AMD has no profile yet for it.

SLI scaling seems to be non-existent on my end, barely noticed a frame rate difference

The 5970 does not use Crossfire. It is two GPUs on one PCB.

Radeonpro works pretty well usually, but when i did it took the bloom and brightness to uncomfortable levels. I found a c2 demo config that enables the r_multigpu command, it works a bit better since there's no flickering and the bloom in kept in check.

If you want to define "Crossfire internal" as two GPUs working together. But those GPUs work together without the need of any special software telling them how to interact. Crossfire is the software that tells two separate video cards how to talk to each other. The 5970 is a single piece of hardware.

This is getting off-topic but the 5970 still needs the crossfire profile software to work properly. It uses an internal PCIe bridge chip instead of the ribbon used in dual-card setups.

Below the final picture, third paragraph, he clearly talks about the use of crossfire profiles.

Just tried and I saw the same thing. Although, I find the increase in framerate only spikes and doesn't last. I have to perform the same trick at the start of every round.

I used the same forced AFR and got really good scaling, but had the same issue with the HDR. How do you turn that off?

Here's my bat file:
Code:
@echo off
cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis 2 Demo\bin32"
start Crysis2Demo.exe +r_Width=1920 +rHeight=1080 +cl_crouchToggle=0 +cl_zoomToggle=0 +i_mouse_accel=0 +g_skipIntro=1 +cl_fov=80 +r_DrawNearFoV=80 +pl_movement.power_sprint_targetFov=80 +r_motionblur=1 +g_radialBlur=1 +g_useHitSoundFeedback=1 +r_Flares=0 +r_Glow=0 +r_HDRRendering=0 +r_SSAO=0 +q_ShaderHDR=0 +r_ColorGrading=0 +r_FSAA=1

It's still a little too bright, but I can live with that given the FPS gains.

Note: I sometimes get flickering in the game (like scan-lines). Go into 'brightness' in-game and change it 1 notch. That fixes it.

According to Geforce.com Crysis 2 has 3D Vision + DirectX 11 + SLI. Maybe NVIDIA and Crytek are still tweaking SLI profile ready for launch window?.

Search the Nvidia site for crysis 2, one of the first few results is a Beta SLI profile for the demo.

Thanks for those. I found the FOV the biggest help.
