Internet required

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 1:45 am

I know I will probably get people telling me to use search, but I don't have a lot of free time to do so at the moment. I ordered this game, and am waiting for it to get here. The issue is I heard that the game requires a steam account and internet to play. This is a tad difficult as I am currently deployed, and internet is hard to come by on personal systems. Is this true, and if so is there a way around it that could be used for those of us that want to play while deployed in combat zones?

Thanks

You only need the internet to install it (you'll also have to have steam on your PC) then from there you can play it in offline mode

but there are areas when deployed you still can't get a connection or if you do it will make you nostalgic for dial up.
SO, is there a way for those who are deployed not to have to activate via steam (maybe a "by request" CD shipped postal) or are they going to have to wait until they return to a Rear Area or the States to play?

I doubt you could cut a deal by getting a boxed version because you need steam to unlock it for you, so AFAIK steam is a must to play unfortunately

... Yea, pretty much svcks. There's not much access made available while you're in a combat zone, I'm guessing just a shared terminal? I'd simply suggest getting it activated as soon as you purchase it, but if it got forwarded to you via the APO, I don't know :/.

I've read others talk about setting up skype over their psps to work, but I think it wasn't in a combat zone. You may see if they are providing you recreational wifi though, given the relays it will svck, but it should be able to get your authenticated.

Sadly the box version requires internet to install, then to play offline you need to be fully patched. Which can if you got a bad disc be 2.4 GBs.

I ordered the boxed version a few weeks ago, and it should be here in a few days. I actually checked to see if it was required several times to install it, and nothing ever said it was until a friend of mine got his copy and it said internet and steam required. I do have access to a very slow internet (usually less than 5kbps) but do not have steam installed on my new laptop.

As far as should I be concentrating on other things? Not really. My job is maintaining communication systems. When I am busy, things are bad, so I do have a lot of downtime that I need to fill with something to occupy my mind aside from my girlfriend and daughter. I am seeing this internet thing required on games more and more and it makes me sad. I really do not want to have to wait 2 more months for my R&R to just install the game.

Come on Bethesda, stop acting like E(vil)lectronic A(sses)rts!

The sad thing is that Bethesda knows an internet activation screws a small percentage of their audience and they just don't care.

What does Steamworks mean to you? Senior producer Jason Bergman explains:

"Fallout: New Vegas uses Steamworks for achievements and other features (such as friends lists, cloud storage of user preferences and so on). Use of Steam will be mandatory at retail. So what does that mean? We’ve implemented Steamworks in as light and unobtrusive a way as possible. Yes, you will have to install Steam when you install Fallout: New Vegas if you don’t already have it. And yes, you will have to be online at the time of that initial install. However you can install the game on as many systems as you want (with no restrictions!), and you do not have to be online to play the game after your initial activation. Not only that, but once the game has activated on Steam, you can throw out the game DVD entirely and just download the game over Steam. If you don’t even have a DVD drive, you can just take the CD-Key from the box, enter it into Steam, and download it without ever using the disc at all.

For those concerned, this will have no affect on mod development whatsoever. Modders will still be able to create and distribute their plugins the same way they have in the past.

We made the decision to use Steam after looking at all the various options out there and decided that it provided the best, least intrusive experience for PC gamers. We think you’ll agree."

I was always a fan of Bethesda for the fact that they didn't do the things that EA, Valve, Ubisoft, and other companies have done. Be nice to have a dev response to this. Maybe they can suggest a way to avoid it. I really don't want to put Bethesda on the no buy list for the rest of my deployment.

I love that... as if that is some great benefit we never had before. Every Bethesda game before New Vegas you could install on as many systems as you wanted and didn't need to ask. Now it's some great bonus? Give me a break.

Posts have been deleted, I hope I got them all. Flaming, political discussion and flamebaiting are forbidden by our rules. I am only likely to give you one free pass on those rules. Next time it's a warning for all involved.

OP, thank you for serving and I am so sorry you can't play this game due to the Steam requirement. I hope you have a chance to dowload steam soon. Stay safe.

The EULA indicated one disk per pc, of course you could install it on another but you needed to use the disk to run it. Please be careful what you admit to doing here. We do allow discussions of anything against the EULA.

An update. I was able to get steam installed and got FNV installed. The key was registered with steam and all that. I still can't play. I try to load the game, steam tries to load and stops responding. Every time. I have tried to use steam in offline mode but it tells me it can not connect.

Anyone else have ideas?

Bethesda, I am highly dissapointed in your decision to use steam. So much so that if I can't play the game I paid over $80 for (sending stuff to APO's can be expensive) I will never buy another one of your products again. I understand it is commonplace for most people to have broadband internet these days, but with this choice, you have abandoned some of your loyal customers.

yeah im not the hugest fan of steam either, but what can you do. For you to run in offline mode you need to make sure the system is fully patched. While you were connected did u get all the updates?
If you did, you shouldnt be having the problem. Try looking in technical for possible hardware problems/fixes, and without making myself sound like too much of a pratt, make sure ur system meets spec.
Hope that helps

Yes my system meets the specs.

The issue has to be steam not updating. The only internet I have available here in Afghanistan is a cellular card for the local cell company. I may get .5 megs a sec if I am lucky. Fail bethesda and fail steam.

First, can you launch Steam by itself and connect up?

Do you have Steam set to Store Credentials Locally?

Second, have you rebooted the machine since you installed the game and or Steam?

I am moving this to Hardware so you can get help on this.

First, can you launch Steam by itself and connect up?

I have been trying to do that. It either starts updating and crashes or Just sits for hours and then says it can not connect

Do you have Steam set to Store Credentials Locally?

I have been unable to get into the settings menu.

Second, have you rebooted the machine since you installed the game and or Steam?

More times than I can count.

I am moving this to Hardware so you can get help on this.

And before someone says that it says internet is required, I preordered the game from Amazon over a month ago as they are the only reliable site I have found for shipping games to APO's. I looked for requirements before purchasing the game and internet was not one of them, and owning several past Bethesda games, I did not even think this game would have it.

I had a thread like this going that was getting a lot of heat. I'm over here in the Sandbox as well. Anyway, they closed the thread, who really knows why, but there was no real response that was satisfactory. I simple "sorry" would have been nice, then a fix for us folks out here in the Sandbox. It's a catch 22 with the disk. Even after you get it to register on Steam, Steam will not let you play the game until you get all patched up. Good luck. Bentley Walker is on the Fritz if you are in the Stan. I/O Global just isn't helpful if you are on one of the larger bases from what some of my buddies are saying. I think we should all just boycott Bethesda until we get an apology and a fix.

Sorry to hear about your problems, soldierboys. And so sorry as well I can't offer help, just my sympathies. Really svcks when everything moves to "mainstream" making things harder for people that have some more unusual situation going on in their lives than others.

Stay safe out there!

I sent them a message about this also, work contracts not just where you are but in lots of other remote area's where we are lucky if we have clean running water much less internet or electricity. Got a fast response, "We will look into this and get right back to you" ... that was months ago. When I post about it some unknown person erases it and doesn't even have a spine to PM me and tell me why, this one will probably be erased also. I'm stateside now, but if I get a contract again and feel like playing a game I want to just pop open my dvd-book and select one and play. Especially in locations where everyone wants to kill Americans and just driving to the local store to get a burger is taking your life in your own hands.

As I said before, when GTA 4 came out they had a work around, you could go to a internet hub and download a little file onto a thumb drive to activate your game. svcked driving all that way but that sadly is what we grow to accept from companies that claim it is to prevent piracy (this game was hacked and avil in ... wasn't it 3 hours?) but it obviously just ends up being the end users that deal with the pain while the pirates are happily playing without Steam.

Your problem also might be that it won't play till all the patches are downloaded 100%... if it knows there are patches and it can't get them all completely downloaded it doesn't let you play. As stupid as this is when you consider how many people have slow internet speeds it's what we have to deal with. Good luck in getting this resolved, your really going to need it. People don't understand how difficult it is unless they are sitting right there beside you sadly.
