No Internet

Post » Wed Jul 13, 2011 2:46 pm

So last night we had a small thunder storm out here. Really it lasted maybe 20 minutes. We lost power, but generators came on. Then we lost Internet......still out. I called the cable company and they said the node was knocked offline during the storm and the earliest they can have someone check it is tomorrow night.....2 days without Internet. I am tethering off my Droid right now, with a 2mbps down connection.

So far, I have just been watching movies most of the day and sleeping to pass the time. What do you guys do if there is no (fast) Internet and have a ton of time to spare?

It's the only sane solution.

I haven't gone a day without internet for about 7 years. I feel well and truly 'wired'.

i'm often away from my computer for hours at a time, yet when the internet has gone down for an hour or so in the past, while i'm at my computer, it feels like the end of the world. I hate it. It's like a part of me has been taken away and suddenly time goes so slowly. The internet is pretty much my only form of electronic communication. I don't own a TV or use my mobile phone, because the internet serves both purposes.

Hehe...I didn't have internet at home until I was 20 or 21 because nobody really did (and even then it was dial-up until about 7 years ago). Read, video games, talk to someone, go out, etc. Not really a problem. :)

Read a book.

I might, however all my actual physical books are packed away. I always get my books through Kindle for Android/PC. Which I could use right now....maybe. I still have to download the updates for it.

That was the first thing that went though my mind!

So true, when I am just sitting here, it is so boring just waiting....hoping blindly for Rainmeter to update with a valid IP address. Running on 2mbps for me is nearly unbearable, there are about 8 computers in this house and I download about 10GB-15GB a day on average. (Podcasts, youtube, stuff like that).

When the internet goes out at my house, I just read a book, watch TV, go outside, visit a friend, or play a single-player game.

I could easily go a long time on a 2 mbit down connection. I can go long without any Internet at all. Just watch anime and mess around on my computer without *ghasp* Internet.

However, no electricity is a different matter. After my 8 hours of useful battery life is done I usually get into the fetal position :P That or read manga.

My friend is a different matter entirely. We were at a bloody con and he was whining about not being able to get on IRC...

I would spend time with friends. If I'm just home alone, then I'd probably listen to and play music, maybe a little TV and read.

I am plagued with this problem rather frequently, but I have plenty of stuff to do, so it's alright. However if there are no pressing matters then I guess I either listen to music or watch movies. But that's only if it's down for half an hour or so as it usually is for me. If it's gone for two days, it's not a problem as I have enough on my plate this summer anyway. :)

It would be annoying sure, but I'd just... do other stuff. Read a book, watch TV, play video games, play with my cat (actual RL socialising would probably be out for me; what with organising various work schedules and babysitters, the internet always plays a major role in getting everyone organised enough to get everyone out at the same time :) ). I'd probably visit my Mum too (if only to use her internet haha!).

I am going to assume that a possible natural disaster scenario occurs, such as a hurricane making landfall. There would be no electricity, no dsl, no cell internets, no wifi, all the towers would be inoperable until repaired. Then I'd probably do yardwork, clean up, garden, walk the dogs around the neighborhood and check up on the neighbors, help them if they need it and invite them over for board games, a barbecue, and to eat the ice cream that would be melting.
I could also cross stitch, knit, crochet, make jewelry, start some seedlings, read, plus I would ride the bike to an establisment with airconditioning and order lunch.

If it was just the dsl line going out, I'd either surf on my phone, (which I do) or take the laptops up to a place with wifi.

Read a book. Play a game (board game). Make food. I know how to keep myself busy without technology.
