Interview with Josh Sawyer...

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 5:18 pm

A pretty sizable interview with Josh Sawyer, with some nice bits of info about changes to animations, how lots of enemies don't scale, about the merging of the "guns" skills and about the survival skill, and about the series in general. It's a very interesting read.

http://www.gamingunion.net/news/gamescom-fallout-new-vegas-interview--2720.html

GU: Are there going to be returning super enemies, like the Deathclaw?

JS: Yup! The super enemies will feel even more super here. We do not scale content a whole lot in the game, especially stuff that is off the critical path. Because we know that some people don't want to do side content, we do scale the main quest quite a bit in terms of difficulty.

But when it comes to the side content, there are areas within five minutes of the start of the game, that you will go into and you'll probably get destroyed until you're at the fifteenth or twentieth level.

So we didn't want people to feel like they couldn't explore, and there's lots of cool stuff to see, but they'll have to be a little cautious about it. And there really is a challenge out there, like, if someone finds a big nest of Deathclaws this is not the kind of thing where you can just poke your head in and start blasting people. It is pretty hard.

Sounds good, the one thing I REALLY REALLY hope they fixed, was how useless the big enemies were. There was no reward for killing them. If I pump 400 rounds of 5.56 into a deathclaw to kill it finally after using 20 stimpaks and 10 grenades, I want a damn reward. Not a hand worth 20 caps... So provided they made killing the super hard enemies rewarding this will be cool.

Decent interview. Glad to see that there are more quests than in Fallout 3.

So you're complaining they made a game have difficulty? In reality do you expect a deathclaw to have 30,000 caps on its corpse? No? Then svck it up. JS.

Dude, you dueled a deathclaw and survived.

THATS your reward.

You want something fancy? Go kill an NCR Ranger and loot his anti material rifle and desert armor.

I don't think he was saying that. More that there should be some rewards. You net at least 100 caps per raider.. So, high level, difficult enemies should have something.

To be honest, I find more fun in scavving for caps than dueling for caps. So yeah. I don't see why people complain just because it adds difficulty and makes you fight hard to earn a reward, not 'One fight = uber plasma rifle minigun'.

That's how I see it. If I fight a Deathclaw, and live, that's enough reward for me. (well...that and the experience)

And it wouldn't make much sense for Deathclaw to have much on them anyway, I mean...where would they keep anything? On that note though, I speculate that maybe we'll get to harvest deathclaw corpses for meat or skins? Possibly?

I disagree. I rarely got 100+ caps off raiders, even when selling their equipment and all (they hardly ever carry anything worth a damn, except the occasional rocket launcher). The Deathclaw gave you the hand for a custom weapon, powerful supermutants gave you better weaponry, and stronger human enemies (such as Enclave, etc.) gave you powerful armor or weapons as well. What more do you want?

Deathclaws, high powered radscorpions and mirelurks, I don't agree with that. Animals and creatures don't carry anything good except for body parts to sell and make makeshift weapons with for obvious reasons.

They don't have pockets and I don't imagine they go around eating guns and currency for you to rip out of their stomach.

It's been a long time since I've killed a Deathclaw in vanilla Fallout 3. How much XP do you get from them? Because I agree with gunmaster, we need at least some sort of good award for defeating one of the hardest enemies in the game. In Fallout, the Deathclaws at the Warehouse would net you a lot of XP, which was worth it since it takes a [censored]load of XP to level up.

Have high level enemies be really challenging until the PC is a higher level. And, make them have good rewards, like a good amount of XP when you are grinding to level up.

And if you don't need to grind at all to level up, then my suggestion is moot.

What about their hand? Would be good if they were worth alot. Or people saw you are a great hunter. I would like to be able to use taxidermy on them. Have a stuffed deathclaw in my place or a deathclaw rug.

Could find a scavenger in his belly (with pockets or a satchel pack)...
but [IMO] it should be a once off encounter option...

As long as the reward is what you expect for defeating a challenging, high level enemy, I'm fine with it.

Wouldn't the ability to make a powerful custom weapon be enough? Or a strong weapon or good armor? Thats what the high level enemies in Fallout 3 provided (at least most).

By that logic, if I expect a scoped silenced automatic Gauss Rifle from killing a Deathclaw, I'm entitled to it?

I wonder if Obsidian and Bethesda will keep doing a back to back with the Fallout series like Infinity Ward and Treyarch with the CoD series.

That would be funny, and pretty confusing to people who arent in the know. 'Did Bethesda make this game or Obsidian?'

Wow, bunch of dumb spelling errors in that. I mean, "Gun Runners of the Apocalypse," really now? They should spell check that stuff sometimes.

Yeah, I caught that too, but just assumed it's a slip of the tongue on Josh's part, or a flub of whoever transcribed the interview.

There was also a part in there about the gatling "gun" being added to energy.

I actually think that would be cool, If New Vegas is as good as it looks to be shaping up to be I really hope Bethesda decides to let them work on another one. (Maybe by then they will have an improved engine after Bethesda has made Fallout 4) :tops:

Bethesda Game Studios has stated that they are making the engine a lot better for their next game, which is likely TESV. For Fallout 4, expect a really different engine(hopefully).
