Interview with Josh Sawyer

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:45 pm

An interview with Josh Sawyer that I got from my twitter feed (and saw on NMA and the Vault Wikia). It's an interesting read, and has some nice info for modders.

There's nothing especially new (and no spoilers), but it's a nice read, so take a look: http://planetfallout.gamespy.com/articles/interviews/1930/Planet-Fallout-Interviews-Josh-Sawyer

What's the expected playtime of New Vegas - with and without sidequests?
I generally only give my own experiences as a reference point since I don't want people to be disappointed by a generic game length number. On my last playthrough I spent seventy hours doing the main quest and a large number (maybe thirty five) of the side quests. It's a big game.

Is the interface identical for all versions or has it been customized to reflect the system it's played on and the controllers it's played with? E.g. the pc version had a variety of mods customizing the UI, Darnified UI being one of the more popular ones, which changed font sizes, colors, placement of infographics to make use of the better resolution most PCs offer etc.
We investigated offering an "High Def" user interface but unfortunately found that while it is relatively easy to modify existing fonts (as Darnified's UI does), expanding the overall font library to allow for an SD/HD toggle between the two was more complicated.

There's also an answer for that pesky question of what's canon in New Vegas and what's not. :)

How "canon" is New Vegas?
Everything in Fallout: New Vegas can be considered canon until retconned. :)

Thanks for the post. Good to know we can spent so much time in the game. Or Josh is a very slow player but I'm guessing the first.

I'm sure it's a little of both because no doubt he listens to every conversation and probably reads each note/database entry he comes across. For quality control.

Who doesn't listen to every conversation and read all of the notes/logs?

Good interview. Seventy hours on the main quest and ~35 on side quests? Awesome. :fallout:

best line of the interview? This one: Fallout: New Vegas' version of the GECK will be available for PC users at launch.

Woo! Too bad I plan to play the game normally first before I work on mods... hopefully I can stick to that.

If you're that young you shouldn't be playing Fallout in the first place.

Then again, I was 10 when I first played Fallout 2 and I listened to and read everything. It was like a fun English homework for me

its kind of funny how i look at kids and think inst he a little young to play that. (i just turned 17 by the way) and then i think back a couple years and im like" i played games just as violent when i was his age"
it all depends what kind of person the kid is.
my friends used to skip all the dialog in fallout 3 and it pissed me off.

in fallout 1 and 2 it want like fallout 3 where if you said the wrong thing you could always just run away. if you said the wrong thing in the first 2 games your ass was dead. no one could afford to just click the first option until it was kill time

Haha, well, this is one time, I posted it in mine, my latest threads (the morally grey one) links to this, and I THINK it was LKT who posted it in another thread. XD

Good point. Maturity has a lot to do with it. I'm 18 but I often referred to as an old man, which I believe most people would liken to maturity.

Also, end of the maturity discussion.

I didn't read that as 35 HOURS on side quests. It sounded to me as if he meant he did 35 of the side quests. I did more than 300 hours on Fallout3 and didn't do everything, and FNV is supposed to be as big or bigger. Time will tell though. :)

No specific quests are mentioned (unless I missed something), so I would say no.

Spoilers are not only quests.

But this doesnt ruin anything either, as the interview pertains more to technical details on F:NV. So not really.

Heres the way I see it, it may not contain direct spoilers however it is an interview. Interviews contain spoilers in most cases. I'm under the impression that this forum is meant for speculations and the other is for interviews, spoilers, cheats and such. Thats my outlook.

I fast-forward thought conversations after the 1st time I've talked to them. For example: when I did the Waste Land survival guide I talked to Moria about everythign I could. But on subsequent playthroughs of that quest I fast-forwarded. Is that wrong? Maybe you just have a bad memory.

And I only read computer terminal logs if I think it's going to be interesting. Most of them were pretty dry.

And no it's quite the opposite. I'd think 11-14 year old boys would be the ones reading every bit of info because they have the time. If i've only got 2 hours to play (because I go to school and work and have friends) I'm not going to read every little thing.

your forgetting the fact that most 11-14 year olds usually shoot people on sight instead of finding our who they are. i have a cousin who tried to play basically all of fallout without talking people and just killing everyone on sight.

i do see your point though. and yes most of the terminal logs svcked.

but i enjoy listening to the npc.
