Inventory ... retardedness

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 7:26 am

I'm not a huge fan of the current inventory system. However, there are a few bothersome things that are more clunky than others. For instance:

  • Not all of the identical items in my inventory stack on one another. I have http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596956495815212498/50100D9F6EF8BF86F15E3FCADC52C3E5173EBAFC/, but I really should only have 1 entry with a (7) by it. Some items stack, some don't, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

  • Chests don't always http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596956495815211658/011457D4A0D56F5D858A1CDDED4445D18662FADB/. When I'm in the inventory menu for a chest, it's usually just a huge, unorganized stack of items. You can't even sort it out by books, potions, armor, weapons like you can with your personal inventory. Some chests just get totally unwieldy. (This screenshot's not so bad, but it's also just my own personal stuff, taken as a demonstration. Chests with longer lists are totally unsorted and real easy to lose things in.)

  • The buttons aren't consistent. To sell an item, I click it with the mouse. To put it in a chest, I click the R button. To take it out of a chest, I click it with the mouse. To give it to my companion, I click the R button. Seriously guys, the command should be consistent. Sometimes I click R to give away 1 item, and sometimes I click it and accidentally "take all." That's a little silly. I cant tell you how many chests I've emptied by accident because of this. (On a related note, I've accidentally drank several expensive potions by clicking on them instead of hitting "R.") That's just needless frustration.

  • When I read a book, and then go back to my inventory by hitting tab, the only book I can select thereafter is the one I just read. The cursor seems to be "stuck" on that book. The only fix is to back up and re-enter the inventory. I imagine this one is being patched, though, because it seems too bug-like not to be in the works. This sometimes happens with conversations too. Sometimes I can only select the top dialogue option, especially frustrating on those rare occasions that it happens during a decision-time moment.

  • Also, the inventory screen sometimes seems to randomly exit when I try to select a category. I click on "Potions" to go down to that category, and I make sure to click squarely and centered on the word "Potions," and the menu exits. I don't understand why this happens. Works on vendors too, more often than not actually. I've exited a sales screen up to three times in a row because the inventory window just closes instead of jumping down to my selection

That's all I've noticed. Still though, they are somewhat annoying.
I'll add to the end, though, one less important but still annoying thing: You can't sort inventory items by weight, price, attack value, or anything. Might want to think about that for a future update too, just for the sake of convenience.

My number 1 is quest and non-quest items stacked together. I have wine to deliver to someone. Other wine stacks on it. I can't store the excess wine.

May want to look at these three mods for yourself:

Container Categorization (SKSE): http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1227

Better Sorting: http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2730

QD Inventory: http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=667

Also with:

Interface Hard Coded Key Tweaks: http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=88

I use all four and find the inventory process much, much more streamlined.

Now as someone said in another threads, mods shouldn't be there to solve everything -- let's hope Bethesda sees these mods and implements part of their features in a future patch, for our poor console users.

Hey, I recognize those issues... XD My chest in Whiterun is a nightmare to try and dig stuff out of. I've taken to trying to split different types of things into different containers, but it's still unwieldy.

I'm fairly sure #3 is a bug of some sort, as it doesn't *always* happen... just the vast majority of the time. And it's always the books that get stuck. for the dialogue options, if you're using a PC, make sure you move the mouse around enough to change what's highlighted. I don't know why it's so hard to select an option, but sometimes it just doesn't want to acknowledge where your mouse already was, and makes you move it back to that location.

For #5, I noticed it seemed to happen more often if I clicked too far to the left of the word. Make sure you click in the center or toward the right side of the word, and it seems to happen less frequently (still not perfect, alas). As soon as I beat the Main Quest, I'm going mod shopping.

I think my next character is gonna roll like an NPC. Maybe a gem or a scroll on top of 120 gold pieces and what I'm wearing.

The chest in Whiterun is a perfect example of what's wrong with the non-organization of inventory. I feel OP's frustration.

Let's try to move past the 'R' word in describing stupid things though. We've evolved.

I thought about doing this too actually. Only carrying what I can equip, a potion, and a gem and some money. Can we put money in containers this time around? That would be great, we could do our own little bank.

This RP is going to be fun.

Chest in Whiterun?

Any of them really. The house in whiterun was my first house, so it accumulated a huge stack of items and things. My first mod is going to be to put a safe in every house, and then to put a line of satchels and backpacks along the walls of all the basemants so people can sort out their items into container groups.

A million times, this.

So annoying. And clearly bad interface design - this isn't a "PC interface is too much like console" thing, because it's got to be working the same way there. The same command should NOT be "put ONE item" and "take ALL items" within the same small area of an interface (containers).

I have all your problems.
I have found with the book thing, if you say, click on potions, then back to books you can select a new book to read.
Enchanting I have problems with as well, I have to select Item, Soul gem, Enchantment, in that order or is just clears my selections on my third choice otherwise, and i still sometimes have a problem with it if I take these crazy steps, usually if i decide to rename an item.
Favourites????? need I say more............

Chest in Whiterun?

It's just one, giant DERP when I open it. Nothing, and I mean nothing is organized in any way. Not even alphabetically. Not sure if bugged.

And btw, the idea of playing as the sidekick to a Housecarl is fantastic. 'Elder Scrolls: The Adventures of Iona (and her trusty sidekick, *insert PC here*).'

Definitely the direction I've already headed, since I spend all of my money and effort outfitting my companions, and little on my own character...

when i put items in chests, containers, barrels etc. nothing is in alphabetical order instead armor is sorted by rating and other items by value. Its really annoying, id preferred alphabetical order so i can have a neat inventory. ive always assumed that this was normal that alphabetical order doesn't occur. I hope they fix this. BTW i play on ps3.

For my first few days playing this game I thought all misc. items were unsalable, because this happened literally every time I tried clicking on it.

These are just my opinions. I think there should be a quest item slot in the inventory for all quest items, whether it's weapon, potion or misc. That way it wouldn't interfere with any of your other items and it would also keep it tidy. I also think that if the storage devices were catergorized like the inventory. That way I could put different items in the chest/draw without getting lost and not being able to find what I want. Then again I already put all my items into separate boxes for this reason. I have a box for weapons and another for enchanted weapons. Then I have the same for armour. Then Poisons, then another for potions and so on... I like to be tidy and organized I guess ;) Also for everything in the boxes maybe an option on how to sort items such as; Alphabetical, Value, Weight and Rating (Effectiveness). This does make it a lot more difficult I guess and some players want a faster time I guess. This is just my opinion though. Also I wish there was a "Store All" from your inventory into a chest, not everything but in catergories. So store all potions ect. Maybe Store all un-equipped only or something. Sometimes I accidentally use Take All when I accidentally put the wrong item in a chest, I have to spend the time putting them all back to the chest haha. This is my fault though. I just think a Store All would be helpful as well, especially if I could store all items into catergories, so I could Store All Books that I take and such.

And just one more feature, imagine real time inventory, that would be intense especially when I play on Master. I'd not be able to change equipment or drink a potion instantly as I'd not have enough time. Unless I used a quick button to do it. This would make the game extermely difficult, especially when I need to consume potions after one blast from a dragon.

But overall I don't really have complaints. Just some opinions and possible upgrades ;)

You can see yourself in third person, and zoom in and out as well. I just found out myself. (360 here).

1.) Click right toggle to jump to third person view.

2.) Click and hold down right toggle while in third person view, and then push left toggle forward or back to zoom in or out, or left or right to rotate view around your character.

3.) Enjoy panoramic views starring your character.

the menu system is horrific on the PC, so much wasted space, so many steps to do the simplest things, only the barest of information on items and few category that get clogged up with a jumble of stuff.. but your right at least in the inventory things are mostly alphabetical, as soon as you put them in a bag or barrel... what a mess.
