Issue with game: Ed-E a mindless zombie after upgrade

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 7:36 pm

Ed-E has been upgraded as part of gameplay, and now does nothing. He does not attack, and is not attacked. He just hovers in the same spot. He worked fine before the upgrade.

This is not a complaint about him being lost, or stuck in a landscape feature: he is not attempting to move at all.

I have the latest game update which forces companions to follow when you change areas/fast travel, so whenever I travel he is there with me as I pass through a door or fast travel to a new location.

But he just stays exactly there until I do so again. None of the companion commands do anything to him aside from "end companion program".

Either the way I got him upgraded broke him and he's supposed to be useless now (no mention of that in the game), or the game itself has an issue [gasp!].

It's a fairly major failure to have him sitting doing nothing, although the enhanced sensors perk is still handy.

Can someone from Bethesda chime in on this? Is this a known issue and it's going to be fixed soon?

Thanks!

It's a known issue. If you're on the PC there's a workaround using the console. I've confirmed it myself, personally.

Did you try going back to Primm to fetch him after that? It may be enough to re-initiate the script properly.

Or, as mentioned you can fix this via console if on PC.

Haven't experienced it, but I would'nt say he "works fine"

Both ED-E and Rex have a habbit of occasionally attacking random citizens for no reason. They never go hostile to me or my other companion, or change my rep when ED-E kills them, but randomly walking through a town or settlement ED-E will start playing fight music and attack someone, starting a fight between the two.

If it's basically just a random goodsprings settler or New Vegas Gambler I'll ignore it, because who cares about them, but if it's a named person I have to reload my last save.

I voted Works Fine only because he was fine after the FotA Laser Upgrade.

I'm on PS3 and I just had a problem with ED-E and Boone when I went out near Nellis AFB. We walked the railroad tracks to the fence and that was it for them. They wouldn't move forward, backward, nothing. I kept changing settings and nothing. I hadn't read about this anywhere but knew about the Vault 22 fix when they're missing so I fast traveled there but didn't need to go inside to the elevator because they were there with me. I probably could have fast traveled anywhere.

Well, I was not allowed to search for Ed-E console by the forum software, but I did find a huge rundown of Ed-E bugs over on wikia.

I would repost them here, but I think it's likely against the rules here.

The fix for the Ed-E issue I have is not a console command (the useful console command is for getting his inventory back), but to just tell Ed-E to return to base, and then catching him as he leaves and having him follow you again. I haven't tried this yet, though.

ok, so, just telling Ed-e to return to base and then catching him does not fix him- I was pretty sure I had tried that, but just double-checked.

over on wikia, there is an entry saying that sometimes when he is upgraded, he is returned with no weapon at all. That could be the case, and there's a console code for that, too, but I think it's bedtime now.

ED-E have 2 weapons: zap baton and the laser attached to it.

Unfortunately, for some reason ED-E refuse to use its zap baton yet it does more damage after upgrade..........so you would see ED-E adopted the melee AI but he have nothing to attack with.

Just tell it to switch weapons and it should work fine.

I must have done something wrong, as, rather than add Ed-E's weapon, it added a spork to Veronica's inventory. Spork?

OK! GOT IT!

Here's the fix. If Ed-E stops moving when a fight begins, it means he's lost his weapon.

To give it back to him, you have to know which version of Ed-E you have. Pre-upgrade, or post-upgrade, and if post-upgrade, which upgrade you got.

These are the prid codes for the three possibilities. Entering a prid code tells the console which character the commands you are entering refer to, in this case, add item.

001732d1 (Normal)
001732D0 (Follower Weapon Upgrade)
001732CF (Brotherhood Armor Upgrade)

To give his weapon back, right-click him, open his inventory, then open the console.

Type

prid (number above) [enter]
additem 169df4 1 [enter]

Ed-E should now have his weapon back. That's a relief, after several days of him following me around doing nothing useful.

what has always worked for me is to

~
kill (make sure you click on him)
resurrect
disable
enable
~

That has always gotten my ED-E back working.

Hmmm, I'm on the PS3 so I don't know if that makes any difference.

What did help me, for sure, was reading a little about some of ED-E's problems here in the forums. I didn't bother with him (it?) in my first play through so when I went to get him during my second, I was ready. I fixed him up, I followed the quest instruction and then just waited. Having ED-E as a companion early in the game, you will eventually trigger everything you need as you explore and do other quests. At least, that's how it went for me.

Thanks to people documenting their problems here in the forums, I was able to avoid all the glitches.

Has this been tried with Veronica when she stops following you? I wish I'd have kept the save game file from that now to try it. :(

I have used it for Veronica and it worked (PC). I think these things are some kind of scripting errors and it restarts the NPC.

Danger Will Robinson, Danger.........take everything out of the NPC's inventory first or you'll lose your stuff.

THAT was the absolute BEST piece of advice I got from reading these forums!
I kept ED-E loaded down with scrap metal, scrap electronics, wrenches and duct tape that he proll thought I was building his replacement! LOL! I would have been soooo mad to loose that stuff!

Sweet, at least I'll have that to try on my next playthrough unless the patch fixes it. Thanks!
