Item placement in houses

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 9:37 am

Hopefully this isn't a duplicate but if it is - feel free to close it out Mod

Why can't I place something where I want it, and have it stay there? One example - my master bedroom in the sanctuary. There is a pedestal at the foot of ther raised bed area, just at the top of the steps. I had a really cool looking helmet, placed it on there, and when I came back it was on the ground. Same thing with one of my houses. I had a few dragon claws set up in a cool little display on the floor near my weapons case... took FOREVER to set them up just so. Next time I came into that room, they were all over the floor like someone had come in and kicked them around the room!

Its the exploding item bug.

Its a known and irritating bug, for those of us that actually want to set up our homes.

Yeah, I gave up placing stuff in my houses outside of chests. I had to even restart back on an old save once because I put some masks in an enclosed display case in the archmage chamber. Came back and one was on the floor and the other missing entirely. That was pretty much when I stopped putting anything down outside of chests.

Here's what you need to do. Drop the item near where you want it. Then leave the house. Enter again, and then place it where you want it.
If you accidentally put it back in your inventory, you'll need to drop it and leave again.

Yeah I have a ton of stuff all over the floor of my room in the sanctuary... staves over in that corner, scrolls over there, cool armor over there... I keep potions and miscellaneous stuff in chests, but it would be cool to be able to line up the staves along a hallway or a wall of an unused room. I have a huge pile of dragon bones and scales in a completely separate area but I'll walk by and they will be sprawled out into the hallways... kind of annoying because I end up kicking stuff all over, that I know for a fact was tossed carefully into one corner :-( But at least I now know it's a bug so thanks for the info.

I will try this, I tried the whole save game place your item and then reload and rinse and repeat but that did not work.

This doesn't always work. I tried many times to store my items like that and some items just keep on moving out of itself.

I'm also a player who like to store his items in house. I loved that in Oblivion, my Skingrad home was full of all the things i found during my adventures. This just isn't possible in Skyrim. I tried to make a table full of beer (mead lol) in Hjerim. It doesn't matter how many times I keep on placing the meads from the shelves to the table, whenever I get back to my house once I left they spawned back where they first were. Same thing as the bones in the secret room in Hjerim. Due to that bug they won't disappear, but I have played soccer inside that room many times with the bones to kick them under the tables but every time I get back they are back were they were. I really hope a fix will come to take care of this.

A fix for this would be great along with making items easier to position.

hopefully bethesda will fix everything some day

in the meantime, here is the scoop

the problem is caused by physics and items weight and conditioned behavior (havoic behavior)

bethesda went over the boards without paying attention to realism or immersion
and focussing on special effects during combat (make sure those items flow in all direction when facing a fireball)

SOLUTION:

ok that will only help so much

make CERTAIN the surface is much larger than the item, not just a little, a WHOLE LOT

example: your helm will stay put on a bed or a large table

so far I got no problem putting most books on shelves or table, but stacks of more than 3 books tend to crumble
even stack of 3 are not always safe. 2 is always safe
larger books are more troublesome, put them on lower shelves

(here I was talking about where to put books when all your active bookshelves are filled to capacity, obviously)

plates, pots, dwemer crap

you need to find a large enough flat surface

I was able to put a dwemer gyro-thingy on the weird rounded pedestal at vyndrell hall entry
the one with the top shaped like a bassin of some sort

I was able to put the flat dwemer bowls on the flat pedestal of vyndrell hall in the entrance

I havent found a satisfying solution for the round bottom dwemer bowl

ALWAYS PUT YOURSELF ON WALK MODE WHEN PLACING STUFF

Also in some cases stealth mode works even better

however, so far, for me, it s still about books, some specific bowls and cups ....
with verry limited satisfyability .... verry frustrating

Before they do this, they should fix up the containers first. I've got half the bookshelves not working, a missing chest in my Hijerim Bedroom, and Staffs that get displayed on thin air when placed in Item Display container. and for some funny reason items that I take in Houses no longer respawn. Figure this out.

Before they do this, they should fix up the containers first. I've got half the bookshelves not working, a missing chest in my Hijerim Bedroom, and Staffs that get displayed on thin air when placed in Item Display container. and for some funny reason items that I take in Houses no longer respawn. Figure this out.

there are two types of bookshelves, the active bookshelves (for books) and the static ones (that you can put crap on, or put 2-3 books on the horizontal, manualy, using the physics engine)

they look EXACTLY the same

You can tell which ones are static because when you buy the house they already got free junk on them, usually ingredients

It is true that they should have made all of them real active bookshelves, and that perhaps bookshelves could accept something else than books, but I guess it s more complicated

( for some funny reason items that I take in Houses no longer respawn)

items always respawn (patch 1.3.10)
but it seems it may be a bit slower
also there may be a bug that if you put something in a container it prevent that cell from respawning
because the whole riften cell didnt respawn for 90 days after I put flowers in the honeyside barrells to test their safety
when I removed the flowers it did magicaly respawn
to be clear: other cities DID respawn nearly 10 times during that period, only riften didn t respawn
so look out for that problem, maybe you put something in a container

(missing chest in my Hijerim Bedroom)
never heard about that one
how do you know it s missing if it isn t there
anyway, hjerim is known to have issues

(Staffs that get displayed on thin air)

you mean the weapons plaques ...
yes they got issues with anything except swords
It will certainly get fixed, don t worry

but that s why item placement is critical. it s not an *or*, it s an *and*
it s almost all code related

by the way, weapon plaque are not really simple containers, it s the code that do the trick
so when theyy say they fix the code first, that s what they mean

normal containers are just data, low priority, because it doesn t change the exe file, doesn t cause side effects or crashes
for example, if there is really a disapearing chest issue, that s the attachment of the script that s probably wrong, or the script itself
nothing to do with the skyrim.exe

the allignment of the staff is different. could be anything. from script to the way the items got designed (default orientation), or even some hard coded aspects in the skyrim.exe

also it s doubtfull that an artist will start doing c++ coding, or a c++ coder will start doing artwork
so that would be nice if peoples like you didn t invent priority that make no sense

*here, tell those coders to fix my bedroom texture, faster, faster, faster*
*I want that texture wizard to rescript those staves*
*you marketing guy, draw me a pink horse already*

make you sound like spiderman boss

best you can do is report the errors, be as specific as possible and tell exactly what you did (like store stuff in containers)
