I didn't see a thread about this. I guess that with the last shuttle going up yesterday, the space age, for the US at least, is finally over. :cryvaultboy:

I'm not so sure that I'd agree it's over, manned (US) space flight may be on hiatus for awhile, but definitely not at an end. What I don't get is that there has been more than enough time for NASA and the Gov. to come up with a viable successor to the space shuttle...think about it, they've had over 25 years to come up with a replacement for it, and knowing that we've already lost two of them to unfortunate accidents should've been more than enough incentive to come up with a plan.

EDIT: oh yeah, almost forgot about the telescope. I'm not really sure what to make of it, it seems that there's always something somewhere that's a victim of budget cuts and cost overruns, or just bad luck and timing.

I for one consider this a good thing. Flying people into space risks drawing the attention of alien invaders (eg, Martians), which is very irresponsible.

Meh, let them come. I'm sure we have a top secret defense system in place if they do ever "attack." :P

Sorry to hear this particular program is in trouble but if it really is going over budget then I can understand why. NASA has to be able to keep up their end of the bargain for this to work. There will likely be a replacement in the future but I can't help but wonder what's going to happen to all the equipment and materials that's already been constructed.

That would be like the worst thing to happen to space exploration, in like, ever.

I would have thought the numerous explosions on the pad were worse than a telescope being cancelled.
