Jumping while sprinting?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 2:06 am

Any idea why the ability to do a sprinting jump is absent from the game? I'm pretty sure I can jump while running really fast in real life, but in Skyrim there's a full second delay between sprinting and jumping. Was this impossible to do for some reason?

The resources to implement this went to the Giants and the Nordic Space Program.

Other than that I have no Idea and often wonder about this myself.

Yeah it's irritating.

I like doing the ol' armour jangling hand on pommel epic running "fields of Rohan" style.
Having to drop out of sprint to jump a ditch or hop off a ridge breaks the rhythm of movement across the world.

I actually just really miss acrobatics tbh. :(

I had an awesome jester build in Oblivion you know. *sigh*

I can also do a handstand in real life, doesn't mean you should be able to do it in Skyrim.

Though I thought I remembered reading about hidden files regarding sprint jumping, or maybe jump attacking...

You can't expect a videogame to do everything right.

Are you honestly trying to equate the two? Something random to something that can be of practical use, make moving less clunky, and is actually pretty logical?

A running jump doesn't seem like an unreasonable request. Especially considering past TES games, where if your skills were high enough you could jump and attack simultaneously. Seems as though they could have made a perk for it to compensate for the lack of skills in game. Mayhaps they will.

Wish we could attack while falling/jumping too, but I suppose you can't have everything lol

Yes, but this is just one of many tiny things that's done wrong / steps back that add up into a major issue

Sure it would be practical but they didn't add it in, I don't really feel that it's something that's needed. I only use sprint when I'm on a flat surface or trying to get somewhere fast. I don't try to use it to clear large gaps or anything like that and if I do have to stop and jump over an obstacle it doesn't really bug me to have to tap the button for a split second to jump.

It's totally not unreasonable at all, I truly do miss acrobatics and athletics though. On my PC character I jacked my movement speed up 30% so my Khajiit actually feels like one again.

Its not like there are many places where you would need to use it.

off topic: if you crouch, jump, then sprint while in the jump. You do a silent roll forward. Makes the perk in the sneak tree useless

I just dont understand why this wasn't put in. It's little things like this that make me feel like they really cut corners in certain areas of the game.

you'd probably be able to jump beyond the borders of some villages like whiterun if you could do that. it would screw up the loading neccesary to enter certain areas of the Skyim wilderness.

Well this is the first TES/FO game with sprint added, so I am sure the next FO game will get it right and so on.

Maybe you wouldn't use it personally, but in the Elder Scrolls series there have always been players that like to feel agile and nimble. Not being able to do something as simple as this makes it extremely clunky to sprint through the wilderness or get past obstacles with agility. It almost ruins things if you want to be that type of character.

It's already possible to get past the borders of Whiterun, silly!

There are invisible walls in the game already. IF you could jump over the walls, they easily could have made an invisible wall stopping you, or just made it so that when you try, it takes you to a loading screen and you end up outside the city.

It's sad that we have to wait for the next game for a new feature to be done right. Honestly though, I don't know. With the way this series seems to be going.....I hate being pesimistic, but I don't see things like this getting better. It seems like with each new game, big things are added, but other things become more shallow and watered down. I don't know, hopefully you're right and I'm wrong.

I do miss the skills something fierce at times. I know Beth undertook a huge project by trying to change the skill system into the perk-tree system... and I can almost understand why. But clearly some things weren't thought or played entirely through. It's understandable that things would be dropped or let go, and it's too bad. But, on the other hand, leveling does have bit more natural feel, which is honestly nice. But I think finding that perfect balance between removing skills with perks is always going to be difficult and leave some people feeling disappointed.

Yeah, apparently you haven't figured out the whirlwind sprint yet.

My guess is that they are trying to appease the hardcoe fans with the MMO. I am sure it will expand the lore and return some complex gameplay. We will see were it goes... To be honest I am more excited for a new FO games.

I agree. The leveling system as a whole is an improvement, but it could have been done much better. Much better. And in the process things became shallow and watered down. This is seen in most aspects of the game, not just leveling. I hoped that Bethesda would take the things they did right with FO3 and the things Obsidian did right with New Vegas, and expand upon them in Skyrim, but I dont know...it really just feels shallow in certain respects. Anyway, sorry to derail the conversation. Back to the issue at hand.

How did you we start talking about the MMO? Could you expand on this?

Well you said that you feel like each game is becoming more shallow, which I agree with. But maybe the MMO will break this trend and return some complexity to TES.

The whole sprinting mechanic is clunky. You cant stop on a dime turn then sprint. you cant jump while sprinting. And you cant attack while in the air. I definitely would like if they cleaned this up.
