Jumps in difficulty, Frost Troll near High Hrothgar

Post » Wed Jul 11, 2012 11:53 am

I'm more than 500% percent sure this has been brought up before but I dont understand the design decision by putting that frost troll up there by the Greybeards. Pilgrims along the way warn you about wolves on the way up and the snow wolves provide a fairly good challenge but not like that frost troll. There should be more warning! It's like 10 times worse.

I just started up Skyrim again and my Nord on level 11 just got wiped out by the frost troll in a few hits. It was nasty. I felt like I was being punished for something and for no good reason. I guess it was just supposed to be the inevitable "boss monster to be expected cliche"?
Sorry, I just need to vent somewhere.

He's the final boss of High Hrothgar.

Maybe it's so you explore and level up a little bit before plunging further into the main story.

People used to complain that Oblivion could be beaten at level 1.

Ikr, on my first playthrough the Troll in a cave was difficult as hell. After I saw a Frost Troll I tried to sneak, and the Frost Troll chased a Goat. So I was clear.

This is why we don't ignore everything and just go through the main questline. The main questline is not going to show mercy.

Survival. When faced with a larger force when while in an exposed position. Retreat or death are the only outcomes.

level 2 actually, unless you invoke a glitch.

I agree that there should be some challenge in the main story, but the frost troll really is a step too high. In the next dungeon you have to go to, there is nothing that is remotely as hard as the frost troll.

I often want to go there as soon as possible because I want to learn all 3 words of the Fus Ro Dah, not because I want to rush it. I do agree that there should be some minimum level in the main story, but the frost troll is too difficult.

I'd rather see a minimum iq level for games.

This troll is not overpowered at all. He is alone and seen from far away. There are so many ledges and places around there, where he can not climb. Even if you are not proficient with magic/bows, just climb up a little and take him down with fire and arrows. There are some other battles in this game, which you can't win unless you know, whom you fighting, but not this one. This troll is not even hard, just requires a little of running around and finding a good place.

Why must he be beaten? What are you to gain from his death? Is what the greybeards would ask.

Sometimes you have no choice. If you have a companion with you, they attract attention of the said troll. Better to be prepared than to be hit from behind your back.

Well If you really want to know why that troll there its because they want to troll on the lower levels :P so I would just level up some more or just run past it...

by leveling, getting to know the various creatures and monsters and what works best against them.I mean you could sneak past, or hit it from range to get perhaps 1 or 2 crit hits, use poisons, equip gear suited to your build. make sure that at a low lvl you have a basic enchant on a weapon, fire is useful 90% of the time due to alot of Skyrims denizens being frost resistent. [censored]...use your brain man... if you playing call of duty, and i know you do... do you rush out at a tank using only a knife?

I did plenty of side quest and other activities before heading up to the 7000 steps. The Troll wasn't hard for me. All I did was sneak up on him and stabby stabby.

What I find weird is that while I'm fighting a dragon, this frost troll happens along and does about 90% of the damage to the dragon with a few swings of his arms and kills it - that is just plain not believable! Maybe the troll will be the saviour of Skyrim from dragons LOL

I find frost trolls pretty hard but have developed strategies to beat them. I have also found though that if you want to turn and run, you're just as likely to get killed from behind as you run out of stamina real quick from sprinting and it can't regenerate fast enough before he's on you again and it only takes 1-2 hits at those levels to kill you!

who does the MQ so early? any gear you gain would be gimped because of the level you did it at...i dont even touch the faction quests till i hit mid to late 40s ... and im still wary of doing the MQ by 50. I would happily keep leveling till i hit 81 then start actual quests of any kind lol. I have not noticed guards getting owned by a mudcrub just because you chose to level up though lol.

Complaining because 1 single area in the game is not a total pushover ... jeez
It would be much better with no level scaling then there would be many dangerous areas like this that you actually had to level up for to stand a decent chance of success.
