I'm just breaking my RP every single time..

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 12:57 pm

Hello guys !
i'm 160 hours into Skyrim and I have found a serious problem with myself.
The problem is , I choose race , I choose profession , then after a while I'm telling myself that I don't like the idea..
I have played over 8 characters and the maximum MQ point I got to is to the Riverwood Antic room..
Any help/advises with RP ?

Thanks in advance

If you're on the PC, open up the console by pressing the ~ key and type "showracemenu" without the quotation marks. This will allow you to change your race when you want. There might be some problems with racial abilities though using this method.

If not, then pick a race you like and stick with that.

Yeah I know , I tried to , but the problem is not the character creation , it's the creation of the background and story for the character.
I mean , I choose Orc , I break my head with making a story and after hour or two I leave that xD

Well, you don't have to make a "story" of your character. I know I didn't.

I find an extensive backstory to be far less necessary than a thorough understanding of the personality and moral fiber of my character. I know what my character will and will not do without too much trouble, but I pretty much just assume he was an only child with no living relatives, who left Skyrim in adolescence (he's a Nord) to see the world and then returned as an advlt, only to get caught crossing the border and mistaken for a Stormcloak. The thin backstory is more than enough, but if I didn't have a handle on my character's motivations, moral sense and attitude to the world I'd just be wandering around having trouble deciding what I should and shouldn't get involved in.

Don't think too hard. First thing is to read up on the lore of your chosen race, and base your choices off of what you think that race would do: an orc probably won't be into much magic at all and love to mine and don't forget the code of blood they have. A high elf would most likely support the imperials, be fond of magic and not associate with some of the lesser races. A nord would be high on honor, complete quest lines that do with the tradition of skyrim and its culture.

Just start by using your character to affect your choices of who to quest for, and how to build. The story of my role play characters tends to make itself by just sticking to what I believe that race would do. I normally start with the basic backstory of how I got into that cart in the beginning and the rest 'writes' itself along the way.

You may have this site already, but I use this one http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Main_Page. Contains the lore from previous installments as well as skyrim.

i come up with a quick background for my character based on some of the lore but not an in-depth story.

i feel the key to my rping success is developing the way any particular character is going to fight, accept quests, who to interact with, guilds to seek and enter, etc.
and then sticking with that throughout my gameplay. no matter what.

as well, what i've been doing with skyrim now is looking at the official attributes for skyrim races and picking 2-3 major that i can fully level, and 2-4 minor ones that i can not fully max. the remaining are by default only.

it helps me stay focused and restricts/limits how i play, my character and what i do in the game. it helps me to not become a do/be/join-all i come across, which, in turn doesn't cause character grinding burnout.

as far as roaming in-game i try to do in incrementally and not just haphazardly wherever i end up. i get to know the terrain and sort of "clear" it all out then migrate somewhere else, always, keeping in mind my character and the quests i have limited myself into taking.

Well I get the point of not going too deep with the story , I guess I'll take that to notice :P

By the way:
I've already made myself a short based story, with a Dunmer who migrated to Skyrim from Morrowind in aim of going to Azura's statue and look for her artifact.

You could RP a character with no background, perhaps with amnesia.

I always find that my characters have much more depth if they have something in their past which they are trying to forget, or attain redemption for. In my characters case, this was the murder of his cousin, whom had been like a brother to him in his youth. My other thoughts were perhaps he was once a member of the Legion, but deserted after taking part in some kind of war crime. Another was that once he had been a bandit, but left the group when the leader became increasingly violent and barbaric. I don't know why but I feel as if having a dark past gives them something more, as well as an excuse for coming to Skyrim in order to start again. Maybe it's just me. :)

I'm RPing a witcher, and it is a blast. Have you tried a mercenary story? It might suit you.

What about a jedi? There's lightsabers too.

But I like being a professional monster hunter...

I made a Redguard that ended up looking like a slightly tanned Nord once. I decided his ancestors migrated from Hammerfel and started mating with other races. I made up a simple backstory of a young man seeking to make a name of his own, with no concrete expectations. I decided on a grey area between good and bad to settle into and started my adventure. Anytime I started to stray from my original idea, I just thought up a fun way it might be relevent to my mixed background. I was going to be a battlemage at first, but ended up being a pretty straight forward Destruction mage. Its hard for me to ever pick exactly what I want to do with a character when there's so much freedom to head in a different path, so I end up making a lot of characters this way!

Anyway , I came for a story , strong and basic using te advises from here:
A Dunmer who's an adventurer and who's searching for Azura's star , he lost contact with his family after the eruption of the volcano , and after he knows that he's the dragonborn he doesn't take it with too much honor , more like a basic skill..

What do you say guys ?

Sounds like a great start and fits well with the lore, just leave it there and let the story tell itself. Maybe even wrap the nerevarine story in there somehow....maybe he's a direct descendant from that powerful hero of morrowind? Perhaps he fights the oppression of dark elves and mer alike (affects your choice in civil war). Lot's of possibilities there
