So I just finished the Blood on the Ice quest..

Well for the longest time, I tried to start the Blood on the Ice quest (which is absurdly short and underwhelming, mind you. -_-).

I finally gave up, because no matter who I talked to, no matter what I did, the quest wouldn't start, I'd go to the dead body outside the graveyard, 3 people would be standing around, no one would talk to me about it. So I just gave up.

I also heard people say you couldn't buy a house until this quest was started/ended. OR something like that.

Well, I went into the Jarl's hall (Stormcloaks defeated, Ulfric dead, Imperial Legion won) and talked to the steward, and he offered to sell me a house. Well, I thought this was weird since people kept saying that the quest had to start b4 this.

So, I bought the house. And when I went INTO the house, THEN the quest initiated. There was blood everywhere, body parts lying around, and I was like uhhhh..cool. So I kept getting this message to "investigate" stuff and then the quest started and finished easily.

So..buy the house first? then the quest will start?

I found the structure of this quest just kind of... not tightly put together. I actually did have it trigger normally by having coming upon the crime scene. But then I followed the blood trail first because it was bloody obvious, if you will pardon the pun, picked the lock on the house, etc. Then I had to back track, do things in proper order, make sure I didn't sell the amulet, make sure i had the flyers on me, etc. It was just a mish-mash of quest tasks that could have been put together in a smoother fashion.

I did not yet get the second part of the quest to update (although that may depend on how you finished blood - I opted to pretend like the

court mage was guilty, even though I am pretty sure that is not the case, since obvious-creepy-curiosity dude kept making comments.
So I know a second quest is supposed to kick in eventually, but Windhelm may be my least favorite city. Playing as a dark elf, it makes me want to punch all the Nords in the head, not my normal modus operandi.

For most of us having trouble with the quest, there is no murder scene in the graveyard -- the graveyard is empty. And the steward will not sell the house until you've seen the murder scene -- he just tells you that it's not yet for sale due to some recent unpleasantness without elaborating on what.

Yeah nothing at grave yard.

Either that or maybe I'm supposed to go there straight when I first enter Winterhelm? I just started a character so maybe that would do it. Wonder if the patch fixed this.

I finished the quest with the strange amulet still in my inventory and didn't sell it. No idea what to do with it now. Guess I'm stuck with it.

The quest seems to work fine only if people do everything in a very precise order. But if they do anything out of sequence it goes nuts it seems...

The person that made this quest does not know how to make quests. FIRE THAT PERSON.

It has several ways to start and unfortunately several ways to pork it up for you. The stormcloak version is where you actually can buy the house first. The imperial quest line, you have to wait till you finish the town battle and then the Jarl will tell you he will make you Thane and the other guy offers the house for sale, but he keeps saying there was an incident and it's not available.

In that situation, you have to go talk to the guard by the body in the graveyard and no matter what you do or how many times you return, there neveer is a body or blood or people standing about.

I think in my particular circumstance it's because I killed that murder victim already way back when the brotherhood first came to me and gave me a choice of three people to kill. I think I killed the woman and that porked up this quest. At least that's the info I have found out. Unless I find something else out, I am just gonna forget that house as I don't think it will ever be fixed.

Correct. If you sell it to the curiosities guy, you can get it back from him at the end of the quest, only this time it has some cruddy enchantments and you can remove it from your inventory.

At least it's weightless. I'm tired of carrying some dude's four-pound drum around everywhere.
