Just had a disturbing thought..

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 4:56 am

So I was thinking about all the things I couldn't do because I don't want to do the MQ on my ranger, including not being able to go to Whiterun without triggering the second stage of the MQ, or buying a house in Whiterun without doing the MQ, or taking part in the Civil War without getting to a certain stage of the MQ, or some quests that wouldn't be available to me because I skipped out on the MQ (The Whispering Door comes to mind), and then I got struck with an even more disturbing thought - will the DLCs or expansions require you to do the MQ? I really hope not, as none of the other TES games forced you to do the MQ to complete the DLCs or expansions, but then again, this is the first TES game I've played that's been so "linear" and "simple" (personal opinion).

Do you guys think the DLCs will force you to partake in the MQ?

If you do not feel forced now then you will likely not feel forced by the DLCs, too.

No one is forcing you or anyone to do the MQ in the game ... period.

I didn't say forced - I said missing out on a lot of miscellaneous stuff from not doing the MQ (the quests I mentioned, buying the house in Whiterun, the whole event that takes place in Whiterun the first time you get there, not being able to partake in the Civil War, etc). Wouldn't the DLC have some misc. stuff included in it as well, therefor somewhat forcing you to do the MQ? For example, if its a continuation of the Civil War, then you'd HAVE to do the MQ to be able to do the Civil War quests that would lead up to the DLC.

Oh dear lord. Why dont you just skip downloading the DLC if it requires you to do the mainquest? Or simply dont download until you feel comfortable doing the MQ?

no but possibly the DLCs may pertain to the main quest. so there may be a time where you could be like "what the heck?" cuz you dont know how the story went. but then again the DLCs may not pertain to the main quest. and how is skyrim linear??? simple sometimes yes. i came across some hard parts, but got through it. but this game is no where near linear.

We do not know what the DLC will hold. Therefore nobody will be able to answer your question with certainty.

You should already know this.

I doubt you'd have to finish the Main Quest but like with Fallout's DLC's you might have to be a certain level and to be honest i don't think Skyrim needs one it ahs so much action already. :)

I guess it is more simple than linear.

Meh, it was just a thought that struck me just now and I wanted to share. Here's to hoping Bethesda doesn't screw my rangers gaming experience by forcing me to change my RP style from a nobody to the freakin' Dovakhin.

They've never had an expansion or DLC for an Elder Scrolls game that required any investment in the Main Quest whatsoever.

I liked Morrowind's system more, rather than Oblivion and Skyrim where its "You HAVE to go deliver this amulet IMMEDIATELY OR WE WILL ALL DIE" or "You HAVE to go talk to the Jarl IMMEDIATELY OR WE WILL ALL DIE"

I mean, I don't have to, but its hard to RP because the character I'm making won't just leave the little settlement to be burned to death, but I just don't feel like fighting dragons with him

To answer your question, probably not, the other games didn't. Right out of the vault in Fallout you got the messages, and all you had to do was overhear a rumor in Oblivion. Most likely will be the same with Skyrim.

I realize that, but at the same time they never made a TES game that didn't have spell making, acrobatics, mysticism, it didn't take six quests to become guild master.. the point I'm trying to make is that there's a first time for everything.

You don't feel like fighting Dragons. It bothers you that you are forced to fight or blow your hero role play. Do you see where I am going?

I don't think it will, I never got any dlc or expansion for morrowin so I can not compare it to Skyrim. But Oblivion's expansions didn't require you to do any part of the MQ, it was Lv. based which I can see being the requirement for Skyrim's dlc.

Bottom line is that these games shouldn't force you to do anything, but it does. The spirit of these games is that you can do whatever you want whenever you want, but in the first couple of minutes it tells you that you HAVE to go do something. Doesn't seem right.

I am fairly certain they will not restrict your freedom to play the game the way you want to by applying stupid rules or requirements for accessing the DLC. They will rather want for everyone to have access to it or at least provide something for everyone even when some of it will have restrictions.

Some quests right now only become available at certain player levels. Others become only available after you have joined a faction. These are existing restrictions and you should keep them in mind for the DLC as well.

Morrowind tells you to do something in the first few minutes of the game, too. And, as always, you can ignore the instructions.

You have to fight the wolves or they will kill you. You have to fight the Dragon if you want to save the town and be a hero. It's just RP. ;)

Difference between "go deliver this" and then the recipient saying "go do some stuff and get back to me later. Or now. whatevs"

and

"OMG GO DELIVER THIS AMULET IMMEDIATELY OR WE WILL ALL BE DOOMED!!!!"

And the difference between, "Deliver this amulet immediately," and "Follow your destiny to save the entire province of Morrowind from horrible fiery death," is? Morrowind was just as pressuring to start the main quest (you do remember the dream sequence with Azura, right?), and I'm pretty sure every new player headed straight to Balmora on their first character. It's natural to want to follow a storyline when it's presented to you; the human mind likes linear narratives.

I'm using a Mod called Live Another LIfe, Well, the name says by itself.

So it basically don't put you in the MQ, so you can start whenever you want.. For me, my character is a Ranger/Hunter, so i decided to make him start in the Wilds...
