Is it just me or is the game just a little...... Unfinished?

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 7:57 pm

There seems to be a lot of incompleteness in this game. Not so much technical issues as they are issues of unfinished mechanics.

1. The Caravan mini game seems to be completely neglected, opponents have no money to bet, you can't add cards that you find to your deck.

2. Crafting seems abandoned half way through, I thought upping my skills would unlock more recipes but I'm still unable to craft alternate types of ammo (excluding shotgun). you can makes anything really interesting on the workbench.

3. Survival has too little of an effect on health gain from food, materials for cooking are so rare that it's more effective to simply find prewar food and water.

4. The weapon mod system is gimped, the weapon mods are too rare and specific to only one model. The rarity would be fine if mods could be more versatile.

5. The companion wheel isn't particularly useful. If they went through that effort why not allow you to shout orders to them as well?

6. Some quests seem broken. For instance, the only way to recruit the robot for the mission given to you by James Garret is to tcl across the map to reach the otherwise inaccessible area. After this if found that the control terminal didn't do anything either.

7. The world seems very empty. You walk into Vegas and hear the beautiful ambient sounds only to look around and find you're the only person in the area.

8. There aren't enough enemies out in the wasteland, walking for place to place is boring as hell.

9. Repair is more or less useless now (Given the broken craft system) as you can repair anything up to 100% at any skill level.

10. Repairing is still crippled by the fact that you need double of something to repair it. Why can't powder ganger armours be cross repaired? I am aware of the perk you can unlcok "Jury Rigging" but it's requirements are a little ridiculous. My thoughts? Keep the Jury Rigging perk but change it so that any weapon is repairable with any weapon of the same class and armour is repairable with anything it's same class. Also make repair lists a little more versatile, and allow useage of items such as dust tape and wonderglue for repair.

11. hardcoe mode isn't really hardcoe. The added challenges a really only a minor annoyance. Thirst, Hunger, and Tiredness set in too slowly and the effects are too weak. Ammo weight is nice however.

12. Why can't we take multiples of the same chem to increase the effects?

A lot of these just seem like gripes with the game, not its state of completion. To me most of those are fine, really just the glitching is annoying me with enemies falling under the map and the like.

If past RPGs and MMOs have taught us anything its that buff stacking is bad.

If you're talking about actual bugs, please post them individually in the relevant forum so that the developers can address them in the next patch.

This list looks like a "things you don't like" list, which is fine - but is a slightly different sort of topic. I should reiterate a plea to people posting in this thread to remain courteous, on-topic, and to avoid flaming and name-calling.

Thanks

There seems to be a lot of incompleteness in this game. Not so much technical issues as they are issues of unfinished mechanics.

1. The Caravan mini game seems to be completely neglected, opponents have no money to bet, you can't add cards that you find to your deck.
I couldnt care less about that card game, and dont think I will ever play it.

2. Crafting seems abandoned half way through, I thought upping my skills would unlock more recipes but I'm still unable to craft alternate types of ammo (excluding shotgun). you can makes anything really interesting on the workbench.
Havent got too into it, I like the idea of its simplicity... but i probably still wont use it much.

3. Survival has too little of an effect on health gain from food, materials for cooking are so rare that it's more effective to simply find prewar food and water.
This is true. But I dont see what is so wrong here... It gives play a choice, sure one way is easier, but some enjoy the preparation of their own food and adds a lil background to help immersion.

4. The weapon mod system is gimped, the weapon mods are too rare and specific to only one model. The rarity would be fine if mods could be more versatile.
I have not used this feature yet.

5. The companion wheel isn't particularly useful. If they went through that effort why not allow you to shout orders to them as well?
I have not used this feature yet.

6. Some quests seem broken. For instance, the only way to recruit the robot for the mission given to you by James Garret is to tcl across the map to reach the otherwise inaccessible area. After this if found that the control terminal didn't do anything either.
Ive played well over 4 or 5 hours and many mission... IMO, the missions in these are very intriguing and satisfying, Im enjoying each mission, as they are so different, no problem here.

7. The world seems very empty. You walk into Vegas and hear the beautiful ambient sounds only to look around and find you're the only person in the area.
Its a Wasteland. Not much vegetation and food, in general, to live off. No major distributing manufacturing and farming mills for anybody to consume. and No major services to help people .... People are still vulnerable, naive on figuring out how to survive and hostile to strangers, And theres so much more behind the story of what life would be like hundreds of years after a major nuclear war!... Bottom line, find an idea that will immerse you, get creative, thats why youre playing this game in the first place :)

8. There aren't enough enemies out in the wasteland, walking for place to place is boring as hell.
I would agree to an extent. Because on hardcoe, many enemies are very tough to kill, Im kind of glad I only see enemies every few minutes.

9. Repair is more or less useless now (Given the broken craft system) as you can repair anything up to 100% at any skill level.
Repair may be easier, but it doesnt hinder gameplay IMO

10. Repairing is still crippled by the fact that you need double of something to repair it. Why can't powder ganger armours be cross repaired? I am aware of the perk you can unlcok "Jury Rigging" but it's requirements are a little ridiculous. My thoughts? No comment, Reallly not that big of deal.

11. hardcoe mode isn't really hardcoe. The added challenges a really only a minor annoyance. Thirst, Hunger, and Tiredness set in too slowly and the effects are too weak. Ammo weight is nice however.
Annoyance to you, is somebody elses fun... I think the timing of the effects is just right, maybe a little too fast sometimes.

12. Why can't we take multiples of the same chem to increase the effects?
We should be able to do that at least up to 3 or have your player get sick or affected somehow negatively if you take too much.

You're incorrect on #6. Getting to the place is odd but not impossible.

Its the game. I've grown to hate (and, I mean HATE!!) this game over the past two days. Obsidian dropped the ball, man. *bashes head against the big pretty fallout pre-order box* Just for laughs I put fallout 3 and fallout NV in a cage match. Fallout 3 emerged, untouched!!!

Here's my two cents.
There seems to be a lot of incompleteness in this game. Not so much technical issues as they are issues of unfinished mechanics.

1. The Caravan mini game seems to be completely neglected, opponents have no money to bet, you can't add cards that you find to your deck.
I haven't really played the mini-game yet. Mainly because I don't understand the rules yet and i'm too busy kicking ass in the wastes. I've seen some players carrying around the 1000 caps though.

2. Crafting seems abandoned half way through, I thought upping my skills would unlock more recipes but I'm still unable to craft alternate types of ammo (excluding shotgun). you can makes anything really interesting on the workbench.
While it's true there could me more recipes ingame the crafting system is so much better compared to fallout 3. Also I believe it was said adding recipes through GECK is really easy. Maybe Bethesda/Obsidian will collect some great ones and publish them even for console players for free.

3. Survival has too little of an effect on health gain from food, materials for cooking are so rare that it's more effective to simply find prewar food and water.
Agreed, finding food is much easier than making it and it saves skill points. Still it adds something for roleplaying purposes.

4. The weapon mod system is gimped, the weapon mods are too rare and specific to only one model. The rarity would be fine if mods could be more versatile.
Agreed. Weapon mods should be (partly) universal or more common in my opinion. (with partial I mean like scopes only available for rifles and handguns)

5. The companion wheel isn't particularly useful. If they went through that effort why not allow you to shout orders to them as well?
It's a lot better than the order through talking routine. I like it a lot.

6. Some quests seem broken. For instance, the only way to recruit the robot for the mission given to you by James Garret is to tcl across the map to reach the otherwise inaccessible area. After this if found that the control terminal didn't do anything either.
It's not broken, you just couldn't find the path to it.

7. The world seems very empty. You walk into Vegas and hear the beautiful ambient sounds only to look around and find you're the only person in the area.
I believe I read somewhere the engine couldn't handle too many NPC's in one place. Believe me I bet if they could add more people to the strip they would.

8. There aren't enough enemies out in the wasteland, walking for place to place is boring as hell.
Try walking off the road. I hardly ever get a trip with only a few enemies.

9. Repair is more or less useless now (Given the broken craft system) as you can repair anything up to 100% at any skill level.
I'm not sure what's up with that. I agree with the point you make about repairing anything to 100% with every level of repair is a bit odd, but I think repair is far from useless. Repairing stuff for quests etc.

I've repaired some NCR armour with a different NCR armour. I quite like the fact you can't just repair a rifle by using a different kind of rifle. It adds realism and is more challenging

11. hardcoe mode isn't really hardcoe. The added challenges a really only a minor annoyance. Thirst, Hunger, and Tiredness set in too slowly and the effects are too weak. Ammo weight is nice however.
Isn't getting hungry or thirsty in real life a minor annoyance as well? I find this kind of management quite cool because food and some drinks adds rads, curing some of your sleep adds also thirst. I remember my first fallout 3 run not having to use a single Radaway because avoiding even low rad levels was so darn easy. I love the ammo weight (and now I love the pack rat perk even more). I must admit though I expected hardcoe mode to be a bit more difficult.

12. Why can't we take multiples of the same chem to increase the effects?
It would probably make using the drugs overpowered and the game too easy. Also getting drunker doesn't make your charisma go up, it makes you puke
