Khajiit and Argonian tails

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 5:56 pm

This has been bothering me for quite some time.
The movement of the tails on the player races that have them are pretty much static.

The only thing the tail seems to do is swivel a bit to the left and right whenever the characters walk, it basically looks like someone glued a stick to their butts and called it a day.
Any normal creature that has a tail uses it extensively, especially when you look at cats and dogs, they express their emotions through movements and positions of their tails.
The races in Skyrim don't seem to express that sort of thing since their tails are largely immobile. I can understand that for lore reasons since these species have developed speech the use of a tail as a means of communication is no longer needed, however something like the movement of the tails seems to be instinctive, so you can have that as an arguement.

But what I'm really trying to say is that I would like it if the tails of the Khajiit and Argonians have more movement and are more flexible (as in have a lot of bones in them that allow it to curl and move in a lot of directions and different ways).
I know I'm probably asking quite a bit from the model programmers by asking this, but for me it's a pretty big issue, especially since I play a Khajiit. I think quite a few people would agree with me, or at least on a visual standpoint.

Anyway, for the people that read this, thanks for reading and I hope that this will some day be done, either by Bethesda themselves or a modder that would love to take on this project.

So, love the game so much and thanks!

I agree, the tails are a let down... again. Many were expecting animal legs, but they don't even have believable tails. It bothers me so much how ugly they go through armor and have zero collision on objects.

They look even worse on a corpse, it looks like it's filled with helium just floating like a balloon that's connected to their butt.

lol, true, I can't help but think "tail boner" when I see them. At least they actually went limp when they died in the previous games.

Funnily enough, Oblivion did the animations better.

What do you mean with that?
Has this been mentioned often before or something?

Okay, but if a "bunch" of people mentioned it, I guess this is indeed something that is an issue.
And for these people it is something that matters.
For me the static tail is certainly breaking the immersion of the game, and also, it just looks bad.

For me it is an issue because I would like the devs to make a TES game in Black Marsh and another in Elsweyr but if they give the beast races so little dedication those games would be very disappointing. The beast races are basically humans with costumes, they have too little animalic looks unlike Morrowind, and before you send me to the lore pages or whatever anatomy lessons about reptiles and cats, I will stress that adding beast races in the universe in the first place must have been for diversity, so it is natural to make them as different from men and mer as possible. The tail animations being sub par is no wonder given the marginal role the beasts are given so far and no worse than the beast races body shape being a human in disguise (with those legs, abs and whatnot). I hope if they make a game in the beast races' provinces they manage to dedicate a lot more developing time to make them really unique in looks, skeleton, body shape, walking and running animations, fighting style, etc. There is so much to do and Skyrim only improved the head.

uh, no.

I don't know where this "rigid" thing came from, because tails are pretty fluid, especially compared to Oblivion.

Exactly, being rigid is nothing compared to being rigid and ethereal.

agreed moste games that have some kind of "beast race" in them evolve to be more "beast like" from game to game. Beth does the opposite and make the beast races more and more human. In morrowind they was great, no boots or full helmet and argonian had THEIR OWN SWIMING STYLE, in oblivion more human but at least had "okej" tails, in skyrim "hey lets put a string on the butt of a human".

Actually, animals like cats use their tail more for equilibrium than communication, although they use it for both.

It's like a tightrope walker's stick, and also it might help them a lot when they jump.

For reptiles, I don't really know, I guess they're some kind of artifact that stuck with them when fishes got out of the water, unlike frogs whose tail disappeared.

But it's true that, even with more realistic tail animations, khajiits and argonians will look like disguised humans. Look at their legs, man... this doesn't look feline or reptilian at all!

That shows no dedication.

I understand that this is not Earth and therefore present lifeforms are really not related to Earth's life... and therefore they can look like disguised human with a stick on their butt... but to me that is only a lame and lazy excuse.

Vsions said they tried to make beast legs for Skyrim but they ran out of time. Here's hope for TES VI  Legs, tails and everything should be improved I guess.

In Skyrim the tails go trough benches when the character sits, in Oblivion they don't.

Wishful thinking, my friend. For different body They would need different armor, different animations, I can only see it happen if they set the game in Argonian or Khajiit land, then there would be no easy way out and I'd really applaud them for aiming at original setting which is harder to create.

Well, if you really want to be anatomically correct, the legs of the Khajiit should look more like the legs of the Quarians in Mass Effect. Since what most people assume are the knees of the cats are actually their ankles. They walk on their toes and fingers and have very elongated feet and hands and their upper legs and arms are very short, going only a short distance from their knees and elbows to their shoulder and hip joints.
Also since all cats have 8 nipbles they should also have 8 briasts, instead of just the two in Skyrim. But then again, that would certainly make the armor look really strange and the Khajiit bra economy would explode.

But I'm all for making the Khajiit look more feline, but it would make for a lot of work I think.

Perhaps Argonians are mammal-like reptiles?
