Killed by Death

Post » Wed Mar 02, 2011 4:48 am

I love Fallout New Vegas and loved Fallout 3. I played Fallout 3 for close to 1000 hours on countless profiles, and am now about 60 hours into New Vegas on my first playthrough.

It troubles me that a bullet to the face wont instantly kill a human NPC in these games. Now I realize these are RPG's and not standard first person shooters, but it seriously breaks all immersion for me when I shoot a human NPC in the face from point blank range with a high power gun and he just shrugs it off like he was slapped in the face with a dead fish. My Gun skill is really high, but that really shouldn't matter. If I hit his unprotected face from tree feet away with a .44 Magnum, no amount of DT or whatever should save him. Instead he comes chasing after me with a f'**king stick or tire iron or whatever. Silly.

Having a low Gun skill should make it harder to handle weapons and actually hit someone. But it shouldn't make NPC's able to shrug off headshots.

I think they don't do this, so they don't have to make players characters susceptable to one hit kills. Might be interesting to implement in hardcoe mode though.

My 8 year nephew said the same thing, I simply replied ''well, I'am sure Benny feels the same way''. Then he said ''who's Benny?''

At least FNV isn't as bad as FO3. I'll probably get (or make) a mod that decreases HP at some point but for the most part things die quick when you get past their armor, as they should. With the Unique Plasma Rifle I'm 3-4 shotting some of the heavier creatures and most humans get melted in one ore two shots so no complaints from my end.

I actually prefer having the DT effect the whole body in this game. Like people are saying, it's an RPG. I don't want to be wearing the Holy Armor of GOD that has 100 defense and then get one shoted by some random guy because I like the way my character looks without a helmet. It would completely ruin the immersion for me in an RPG game. In a FPS's I prefer to have headshots be one shot kills for the most part since I like a bit of realism, but head shots in my post-apocalyptic land filled with mutants, ghouls, and Roman legion impersonators? No thanks.

On a serious note, This "Hey you just shot me in the face! Time for payback!" needs to end.

I know, its to make the game challenging, and I know people say "But I don't want to get a head shot on me and have it be one hit kill! No Fair!" While others say "No Fair! I got a head shot on him! He should be dead!" Both of you have a right to an opinion on the matter. But there must be some way to even it out for both parties.

I am sure someone will come up with something in the near future to help us all out, maybe an option to turn "Realistic Damage" on/off, but until then we have about two choices...

1. We can all just accept the fact

or

2. Troll about it.

I don't like it anymore then you do, but I choose to accept it, and deal with it. Whatever you do is up to you.

You can't expect an 8 year old to know who Benny is, let alone Fallout.

We could make the excuse that the Courier should have been killed by the bullets that Benny fired but then that would'nt be much fun now would it.

I can kill most humans with one headshot at 60 guns anyways. When I don't it never bothers me. The realistic aspect isnt an issue since I like my enemies tough. I'd be bored of aiming for the head in VATS 100% of the time and dropping one enemy after another with one bullet.

you need 2 things i think..

#1 Anti Materiel Rifle.
#2 .50 Incendiary Ammo

Enjoy your Headshot spree.

My opinion though: Have headshots count as deaths if the target isn't wearing any helmets that provide DT. (same goes for the character) and only make headshots count for "heavier" caliber weapons.. (really, .22 ammo should just bounce off of good armor. ;P)

This exactly. Even with a guns skill of 10, at distances of less than 5 meters or so, your chance to hit in VATS is almost always 75% or higher. If head shots were realistic then all you'd have to do is stand around until enemies came that close to you, then you could one shot 4 guys with a 9mm.

It's just how it is. It's a video game. If they made it one shot kill, I'd be dead before I left Goodsprings. And what about the melee enemies? A machete to the head is just as effective as a bullet between the eyes.

Why not make explosives guaranteed kills? Why not have a fear mechanism where deathclaws cause you to tremble in terror? Why not have the character sink if swimming in power armor? Because, it is a game.

Well it's not so much not killing. You won't necessarily die if you get shot in the "face". Lots of people get shot all over their head (even their brain) and don't die.

The thing is that there isn't really a reaction to it in game. You can shoot someone with a shotgun in their face and they'll still plug away at you.

If someone gets shot in the head (heck even including the PC) they should fall on the ground for atleast 30 seconds.

My suggestion for this is simple: Make headshots much harder and actually mean something.

Right now I'm at level 13 with 80 in guns. I'm routinely getting 60-70% and higher in VATS for targeting the head. Drop that to, maybe 20-30%, and you'd have a much tougher, and more realistic choice, when it comes to targeting. Do I take the easy body shot, protected by armor, or the much tougher head shot which may outright kill my opponent? When I get a 75% on the body and a 75% on the head, it's a no-brainer, and makes zero sense in terms of realism or game mechanics.

In addition, successful head shots, even if they don't kill your target (let's just say you blew off a cheek or a lip or something :blush2: ) should incapacitate them. I just finished a gunfight with some CLs, and one guy took four shots, point blank to the face, and kept whacking at me with a machete. At the very least I'd say they need to get some knockback, or a few seconds of holding their head. To take so many shots to the skull and act as if you'd been winged in the arm just makes no sense.

It is a game..... on a lighter note Killed by Death is a awesome song  I just looked in thinking there was a Motorhead in game reference I may have missed.

I hear what you're saying. It's an RPG so let's throw realism out the door. Seriously though, I'm not talking about mutants or ghouls, but human beeings. At the very least I would like a more serious reaction from NPC's when they get shot in the head.

Right, but at least the Courier needed luck, medical care and long recovery after beeing shot in the head. :twirl:

I've had guys stop to hold their head after headshots. Is that random? They seem to do it fairly often and I usually get an extra shot in while they're doing it.

If you made the damage more realistic every almost headshot would be an instant kill on almost every monster. I dunno. If I want headshot satisfaction/aggravation I just go play some Team Fortress 2. :)

I hear you. But my point is I wish it was harder to get that headshot. And it should be more effective.

That is a bit exaggerated I think, but I get your point. And it's a valid point. The game would have to be balanced in a different way. Your chance to hit in VATS should be lower. If however I do get that incredible lucky shot with Gun skill of 10 and take out four enemies with four bullets, so what? That would be an awesome stroke of good fortune that most likely wont happen again.

Remember everyone, you are shot in the head right off the bat. If it was "one shot kills" you wouldn't even get to play the game. You would just have a short film not a full game.

1) Not everyone dies from a beeing shot in the head in real life. But if you survive you will surely need some serious medical care and recovery time. Much like our Courier had in New Vegas.

2) Or, the devs could have chosen a different start.

I almost always manage to kill other HUMAN'S (if they're not wearing a helmet) with one shot from my hunting rifle.

But then my Repair is 100, and my guns is 85....so that might be why (I insist on keeping my weapons fully maintained)
