Kinect and Skyrim

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:27 pm

I recently got Kinect, looking forward to all the shouting at the screen i would be doing, but upon getting it i found a lot of the commands didn't work properly for me...

Most of the shouts did except for (as far as i know up to now) Unrelenting force, when i shout Fus Ro Dah, it only does Fus Ro (and yes i have the full shout) and when i try to visit towns on the quick map by saying their name only some work, i have trouble with Riften, Markarth, Solitude, and Morthal (sometimes)...

I have a weak scouse accent and speak perfect english... and i have to put on an american accent or really emphasize words somestimes to get it work...

Is anyone else having this problem?

Works almost perfect for me. If I say the word correctly for a spell or a city it works great

i have to put on an american accent

Wow that svcks.

I've had nothing but good results, maybe 1 in 10 commands needs to be repeated and sometimes it picks up dialogue or ambient noise from the game and thinks it's a command (eliminated thanks to headphones).

You say you recently got Kinect, so I have to ask all the derpy questions.

Did you calibrate it?
How many times have you done so?
Does it work as poorly with other Kinect games?
How is it for navigating the xbox system menu and apps etc via speech?

Also I find that the mic in the unit seems to be directional, there is an optimum position for it to pick up your voice, try moving it around a bit and seeing if you can find a sweetspot.
If it turns out to be the game, hope for a fix.
If it's your Kinect unit... back to the shop with extreeeme prejudice.

Honestly you shouldn't need to put on an American accent, UK localization is gtg as standard.

Canadian here and it works fine for me, although i just use the english version of the shout rather then the dragon language. It sometimes mixes up equip light with quick load, equip bow and dagger sometimes miss, but other then that it works pretty good. At first I thought it was going to be a lame addition but it has been great. Finally have a use for my kinect.

Really? I have mine on top of my tv, about 10 feet away and it works fine even just in a normal speaking voice. It is actually really sensitive as it picks up alot of background noise, even noises from the game it self will trigger the ?tryagain.

Yes, i calibrated the sound, but as i have no other kinect games with it there is no need for me to stand up, in fact my setup is a very limited space and attempting to calibrate the visuals doesnt work properly, apparently im too close and the room has poor lighting, where as Kinect is a reasonable distance and the lighting in my room is not dark at all. But it doesnt matter too much to me because at the moment all im using it for is Skyrim.

I have attempted to calibrate a few times as ive moved it about finding what works best, im going to calibrate it again thought right now as i cant remember if i have done so since i last moved it :/

I have no other Kinect games xD

Sometimes its a bit dodgy, but it works generally fine on the dashboard...

Don't get me wrong its not BAD... it just goes a bit odd on me at times, i only really have to speak american for saying quicksave... the only trouble im truly having is certain city names and getting Fus Ro Dah to work... everything else is relatively okay.

Use a headset or, if you can't place your Kinect near you when you play. Without the headset the background noise of the television my interfere.

Yeah been having the same minor issue  but where I'm from we kinda sound Irish so I'm assuming it's my pronunciation of some words, I find just like you I need to emphasize certain parts of words, or try my best to mimic an american accent as well  I don't find it too bad just a couple of words that I have to repeat once or twice, or it could be the noise level of the surrounding area due to the kids and what not

Aussie here and no it does not work at all. I was so dissapointed with it. It really is the worst adition to a TES game since the horse armour. Just plain broken.

Are you guys that say it doesn't work actually assigning the commands given by Bethesda to items on your favorites list? The kinect only recognizes specific commands. You have to get them from the list Bethesda provided.

I certainly know what commands im talking about, i have the command list next to me at all times, so if i forget a word in dragon i can quickly check it out again

Kinect is starting to work a bit better since i put it nearer me, its just certain commands now seem a bit dodgy to pull off..

You forgot to add "... for me". I've been loving the Kinect. It makes using a pure mage awesome. I can't wait to try it with a fighter build (but I'll have to finish playing my mage first as I don't want to end up getting my commands mixed up in my head).

I'm not sure if I'm doing this right or what, but I'm able to use the third word just by saying the third word (the second word by saying the second... so on and so forth). I haven't had to speak all three if I want to use the third one. Try that and see if it works for you. It makes it much easier.

Speech recognition is incredibly hard to program, and you guys shouldn't be surprised that Micro$oft wouldn't pay to have it calibrated to any language but their own.

Kinect is calibrated to understand American accents because it's made by an American company. If you guys don't like that, then have your own country found a console platform that rises to one of the top three worldwide and then develop speech recognition software that recognizes your local accents.

Fist off I would like to say http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZdJRDpLHbw just for you die hard " pro american's "
Second, I'm from Canada it's just that my whole province sounds irish, which makes it hard for the kinect to understand certain words, or bits of words which in turn forces me to pronounce right or what you americans think is right  I spell colour, colour but if you ask an american colour isn't spelled colour it's spelled color so who's to say that the way kinect understands words is correct? Anyway...... not that big of a deal, I just need to watch how I talk to the kinect is all I could have just as well have said I need to use a mainlander's accent like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR3QHoqfhX8 the buys in the vid are Canadian but sound very different then me

You sir, have just given your Country a bad name.. dont worry though because unlike you i am not close-minded and i understand it is you, the individual, who is a pathetic waste of space.

I totally understand Microsoft is an American company, and i respect that it is difficult to get Kinect to understand every accent, and sure, the American accent is defiantly default. Im not arguing with that.

But to say what you just said is incomprehensible. Your telling people its their fault they weren't born in America? I apologize, people of the world, for this poor example of humanity. Microsoft have customers everywhere, and im sure they are doing their best to make Kinect available to everyone, they've already updated it to understand some other accents, so you have contradicted yourself in every way.

Don't talk about things you don't understand, your fellow Americans are face-palming at you.

I'm not saying it's their fault that they weren't born here, I'm saying that they act like Microsoft owe's it to them to make it understand everyone else. Which, in a way they do because they're a company and you are their customer, but Microsoft cares about one thing. Money. If your accent doesn't make them money, then they wont bother making Kinect understand it. I'm not trying to belittle you (People other than American's) I'm more angry at Microsoft because they don't give a crap most of the time.

That didn't come out right, so I'm getting rid of the first half.

Fine, okay, i can admit when i may have been a bit wrong with my regular outrages.

The way you put it though you seemed to have been saying that its our fault our countries will never compare to Microsoft's renown and success.

I know that companies like Microsoft are all about the cash, but i wasn't arguing with them in with this post, i was just stating my trouble with Kinect and asking for the communities help, not Microsoft's.

Like you said Beth are working on the whole voice recognition thing to accommodate different accents and it's really not that big of a deal ( with my situation ) I only have to repeat myself 1 or 2 times out of 10 commands, and I can always just move the cursor over to where I want to go. It's just a little annoying when it happens during a fight is all, and trying my best to pronounce words as clearly as possible has helped a lot

I'm American and it still gets words wrong for me sometimes. It seems to have a hard time with Equip Bow for one thing. Certain cities on the map like Winterhold also are not recognized correctly sometimes. Most of the commands work every single time though. I'll put up with a few missed words for what the program provides. It's certainly made playing my characters a lot more fluid and enjoyable.

How do you use a head set while using the kinect? I tried but couldn't get it to work, would it be because I only have the normal head set that comes with the Xbox and you need one of those fancy head sets? Or am I just not doing something right?
