Knee Deep in the Dead

Post » Wed Oct 19, 2011 4:52 am

Here are some spoilers in case you might not have played Doom... which I find improbable:

I seem to be recalling a certain landmark game in the first episode of which you fought 2 giant monsters (easy, even if all you have is the pistol) and a flock of demons, and after you beat those you have to teleport into a really dark room where you are confined with a bunch of zombies and you die.

This is Knee Deep in the Dead, Doom's first episode. And for a while that was Doom's only episode. You could not resurrect, continue the game or explore areas you might have missed, your only option was to restart from the beginning.

Shut up already, enjoy the game you got and be prepared for Rage's next episode.

25+ but your point is rendered completely invalid by the fact it's still one of the best games of all time.

18 years actually :) And yes, one of my all-time favourites - still love playing it today.

It's surprising how well doom and quake 1 hold up even today.

No, I didn't forget it. I also didn't forget that it was an arcade shooter with a good multiplayer aspect. I can't seem to forget that the third game had a proper ending and an expansion as well.

I really don't get your point.

so your saying that because a game was awesome 25 years ago that games today should still follow the formulas that made that game a classic? so what if that very same game was put out today? how would it hold up? i love rage and am enjoying it however i do think some things could have been done a lot better..

Doom III left me feeling like the ending wasn't proper at all. Just a disappointing boss fight and a cut scene leaves a lot of questions unanswered and no confrontation with Betruegger or the masterminds of Hell whom were pulling his strings.

so your saying that because a game was awesome 25 years ago that games today should still follow the formulas that made that game a classic?
Not in the least, saying have patience and wait for Rage's next episode. I have a feeling you'll have more boss fight than you think you're prepared for.

Considering that Doom is doing better than Halo on xblive arcade... yeah I do.

This isn't a Shareware game, there aren't "Episodes" like in Doom and Quake. Games haven't been designed like that in over 10 years (probably more like 15)

Quake 2 or 3 didn't use the episode method, neither did Doom 3.

Stop making excuses, the game is what it is. Yes there may be DLC coming, but it's not the same thing as the classic Shareware method for games.

The fallacy you are making is called the hasty generalization. And here is (just partly) where you are wrong:

Half-Life 2 wasn't made 10 year ago. It had multiple episodes(which hasn't drawn to a close yet). Therefore you argument is rendered invalid.
Dead Island has the episode approach (the episodes being called chapters). It wasn't even released half a year ago. Therefore your argument is rendered invalid.
Quake III was a multi-player death-match game, not a standalone single player game. Therefor your argument is rendered invalid.
Doom III RoE was episode 2 of Doom III. Therefore your argument is rendered invalid.

I've played em' all. Doom2 was the bomb for Doom actually. Used to run through the first 6 levels on nightmare, my son could do about eight.

Used to smoke through Doom.

I have nearly 1000 Doom and Doom2 wads, most of the competition H2H wads and I have many thousands of hours in the game.

Rage is a flawed masterpiece. An empty game on several levels but a mechanical tour de force. As a shooter game it's overshadowed by quite a few superior games with much more content and immersive characteristics. Both of the Fallout 3D games are better games. The Stalker series is head and shoulders above Rage on almost every level but eye candy.

id makes great games but time has passed and the bar for the "game" part has been raised a lot. Rage is a bright happy console game which is fine but it does not compare to many PC games for real content and immersive experience.

It was about what I expected from the clues we could glean from the demo/ads. I am enjoying the game and don't feel too ripped of, maybe $10 or so. ;) The cars are fun but I did not buy the game to race cars. The environment is pretty but I hate invisible walls and despise corridor shooters so Rage is not wonderful on those levels for me. I like having to use my head and figure out some way to deal with a situation that I cannot just shoot my way through. There are none in Rage. Pity.

Nice engine id. Now make a killer GAME with it.
