I hate that word.
You and me both I hated it when I first heard it used against TES series when Todd first said it about the magic system.

Agreed, Skyrims magic is more spreadsheety than in oblivion. In oblivion I could change spells with the hotkey wheel without the game pausing and the wheel had upto 9 spells in it I think (xbox only has 2 hotkeys)

Who uses those hotkeys? Why? I press up on the d-pad and have anything I want in my favorites list.....

I never understood why people need hotkeys when we have the favorites list on the d-pad (on 360, obviously).

Not to mention, I have Kinect, so I can just use one of the 20 or so voice hotkeys to equip whatever I want. Not to mention accessing menus without pressing a button. So handy and I love it.

The fav menu list pauses combat. The hotkey wheel didnt. Oblivions was less spreadsheety in that reguard and more fun to use.

I detest the wheel in Oblivion where you could f2f lip threw whatever you out there.

I actually like the favorite system where you assign what you want into a menu so you could access the spells or gear you need on the fly and it only takes a few seconds I think that is perfect for what I wanted with this series. Spreadsheety lol.

Maybe because the favorites menu pauses the game and some people don't like that?

They also added voice commands with Kinect....so that is the opposite of speadsheety. No menus, just action and no pausing.

But I suppose if you don't have Kinect you could be concerned. Too bad, I suppose.

Besides, who doesn't want to pause the action every now and then to formulate a killer strategy after combat has you in a corner or caught by surprise? The favorites menu accomodates that, as well.

just asec "switches spell"

Indeed. I agree, it is strange and immersion breaking. But it's a video game, so it has to be done somehow. That's why I'm so happy with the Kinect support, because I never have to "pause" the game like that again. But I don't think I had as much of a problem with the fav menu as you appear to. :twirl:

EDIT: At above post^ I'm glad for you Mitheledh. Keep fighting the good fight.

The whole menu pausing thing just gives ne time to formulate a strategy and that is great for me and I like to able to access my spells quickly and it only takes a few seconds, I just like the set up, I did not like having so little to choose from on Oblivions wheel.

There you go. Merely a preference, obviously. But I agree, as far as using an Xbox controller's d-pad goes, I'd prefer how Skyrim utilizes it to Oblivion's silly wheel, even at the cost of having to pause to view favorites. Anyone who uses or has used an Xbox 360's control d-pad knows exactly what I mean.

Nevertheless, I am way happier now that I have the choice of using Kinect for all my menu needs, with no pausing! Sorry PC and PS3, I really do wish you guys had it too.

Spreadsheety refers to the process of scroll and click (Like an excel spreadsheet), with no nuance. Skyrim has spellcasting nuance, it's not "Spreadsheet".

Whether that was a good direction for magic is debatable, but I just think you want to charge the word with negativity in the opposite context.

The cost in variety certainly wasn't worth it, but I actually think the enchanting system is to blame, more than the magic. The system limiting one effect per cast (Outside of special spells) really screws up the possible combinations.

They should just get rid of the 1effect on Enchanting limitation (Change Extra effect to reduce the effect divisor when enchanting multiple effects), and then they can usher in spellcrafting much easier.

You can actually see the result of "Spellcrafting" in enchantments. Firey soultrap, Nightingale's Talon, Chillrend's special "Spell" effect. THe potential is there, but it's held back by poor implementation of safeguards on Enchantting.

Yes I liked in Morrowind where you could cycle threw things by holding in a button but it was time consuming I did not like Oblivions will because it had so little options on what you could have and choose from on the fly, that is www by I like Skyrims better I can choose what I want in my menu and have fast access to it: I don't care it pauses the game that is a tiny grip for the speed and access I have to my preferred setting within the favorite menu.

You think enchanting holds it back, I don't I think the developers just chose to hold it back.

With enchanting you could assign whatever spell you want onto your item you could still do that if spell creation and the old spells was in the game they could still have the enchanting particle effects on whatever you enchanted and everything the highest power effect could take over what effect was shown on the item like in Oblivion.
