Agreed, Skyrims magic is more spreadsheety than in oblivion. In oblivion I could change spells with the hotkey wheel without the game pausing and the wheel had upto 9 spells in it I think (xbox only has 2 hotkeys)
Spreadsheety refers to the process of scroll and click (Like an excel spreadsheet), with no nuance. Skyrim has spellcasting nuance, it's not "Spreadsheet".
Whether that was a good direction for magic is debatable, but I just think you want to charge the word with negativity in the opposite context.
The cost in variety certainly wasn't worth it, but I actually think the
enchanting system is to blame, more than the magic. The system limiting one effect per cast (Outside of special spells) really screws up the possible combinations.
They should just get rid of the 1effect on Enchanting limitation (Change Extra effect to reduce the effect divisor when enchanting multiple effects), and then they can usher in spellcrafting much easier.
You can actually see the result of "Spellcrafting" in enchantments. Firey soultrap, Nightingale's Talon, Chillrend's special "Spell" effect. THe potential is there, but it's held back by poor implementation of safeguards on Enchantting.
