LAA is still needed now with 1.5?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 7:02 am

I though the game was patched in such a way the LAA patch wasn't needed anymore.

But after reading some posts on the nexus forum, there are people with vanilla installation with Skyrim crashing consistently at 1.9Gb and they solve the problem by installing the LAA patch.

I am not sure anymore.

I hadn't heard that Bethesda removed LAA support before. I thought LAA was permanently needed for additional mods down the road because you can easily exceed 2GB with mods.

Skyrim was made large address aware with the 1.3.10.0 update. There is no need for such a patch if your game is up to date and, indeed, it will cause problems if it is present on 1.3.10 or later.

Has anyone checked to see that the LAA bit has been set. I've noticed a large increase in crashes since version 1.5. 1.4 was almost perfectly stable.

I wish I knew how to check it. I know they made it LAA aware in a past update, but I have since seen several allegations that they might have dropped the flag again since that time.

Can anyone say for sure if the current version is still LAA?

Sadly, the LAA solved my mystery crashes, at load or quit to main, randomly. Step backwards ftw. Thanks for the idea I guess!

Well i dont know, but running the patch again made my game stable... i suggest everyone do the same and it cant hurt the game, just back up the exe.

Yes i can confirm that all my CTDs are GONE FOR GOOD after the 4Gb patch applied to 1.5.0.26.

I'd like to know this as well.

It appears the nexus download link for the LAA is down, anyone got any alternative links? Can someone upload it somewhere and give us some quick instructions how to apply it?

Yup.

Also, I'd love to hear how anyone has actually used an LAA patch on TESV.exe and still been able to run the game, what with Steam's protection layer and all.

This sounds like a load of hogswash.

What is it going to take to make it clear that Skyrim was made large address aware with 1.3.10 and that a third party LAA patch does nothing?

Indeed, this discussion is stupid. I constantly go way over 2gb without any 3rd party LAA-patch with 1.5.0.26.

It's not stupid to ask.

Just go search on the nexus forum, there are people reporting crash at 1.9Gb memory and then no more crash with LAA re-enabled. It's probably hogwash, but it cost nothing to ask for a kind clear answer when in presence of some contradictions.

Thank you JustinOther for confirming that the LAA flag is ticked in the .exe. My question is answered.

What I dont get, is why Bethesda STILL refuse to make a 64 bit exe.

In order to do that, they'd need to rebuild all the code and some of the code they may not have access to.

Most of the game industry still hasn't made the jump from 32-bit executables to 64-bit executables, it's not just Beth.

One thing people might not realize:

1) Setting the LAA bit on 32-bit executable in a 64-bit Operating System works right out of the box.

2) On a 32-bit Operating System, the user needs to configure his Operating System too, to enable LAA. This is done by setting the /3GB flag in the boot.ini file. If you don't do this, then the LAA flag on the Skyrim executable is doing nothing.

http://dwf.blogs.com/beyond_the_paper/2009/04/enabling-3gb-switch-on-windows-vista.html

I expect most people to run 64-bit Windows7 though.
But this issue might create some confusion.

Doesn't running the LAA patcher on a file that already has the LAA flag unset it?

If it toggles the flag regardless of its value.

I wish this thread would get thrown into Mound Doom or something...
