Learn Something New In Skyrim

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 6:24 am

This is copied from a thread with the same name and purpose in the Fallout New Vegas section.

You put hints and tips that you think will help people. Or stuff that is good to know.

It can be very helpful. :)

I will start.

Never go into a dungeon you think you might not get out of wihtout dificulty, without saving first.
You can't rely on autosaves because they rarely keep the ones prior to the lockdown.

I lost a Argonian female going into a dungeon that was too high for me and locked behind me.

So post away. :)

first and foremost before posting any thread on the forum asking for help, check here for an answer: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Skyrim

if that can't answer it we'll be glad to help. :)

Oh and yes I always save BEFORE I enter a dungeon, then I save every 15-20 minutes LOL
Agree with Gecko - consult the Wiki or simply Google it! Most of the answers are out there.

Hmm, things I wish I had known...

You have to unlock your shouts before you can use them. :) I was wondering why I couldn't shout, even though I had 5 dragon souls on me! hahaha

Eating an alchemy ingredient will reveal its first property

After you escape Helgen, the FIRST thing you should do is head for the 3 Guardian Stones!

If you chop wood, remember to leave the axe were you can find it, but take a pick with you.

When in a fort, dungeon, cave etc, when you loot a chest if an item has a "name" look at the weight, cause you might end up carrying it around til you find that quest. ( Name: Mikes's sword, Lori's piano that kinda thing )

Some of the "stews" are worth making, check them out. Keep their ingredients in mind when looking through barrels.

Never over-level your Sneak. If you get like 90 sneak and your One-Handed/Archery/Light Armour is like 20-30, sure, you'll be enjoying yourself when your Sneaking, but think of dragon battles for example, you will get destroyed.

If you "invest" 500 septims into Lucian Valerius's, his total gold comes up to about 10750, and will go back up to that every 48 hours. This makes selling items 15x easier!

The Banish enhancement is the best gold wise. An Iron Dagger with 10 value becomes an Iron Dagger worth 2000 and selling for 800-1000!

Always keep a set of "Prices are #% better." gear on you, so you can sell/buy for more/less. Combine this with the above two tips for lots of $$$. :)

Do not rely on walls and pillars to block a dragons 1-hit-kill attack.

I was just killed by a dragon's head coming trough a pillar at the College,

Actually, quest items are weightless. :) The UI lists a weight, but it doesn't actually affect your encumbrance (this is similar to Oblivion where quest items were weightless there too, but that game showed '0' weight for them in the UI until the flag was cleared).

Still, though, you will be stuck with it until you do the quest, and a cluttered inventory with a bunch of items you can't get rid of isn't good either way.

Ok I feel REALLY silly asking this question, and I am not new to gaming, nor this series but still haven't been able to figure this out....

Next to going to jail, or paying a fine ntp a guard (who will then take everything stolen you're carrying or arrest you on the spot), how the heck do you get rid of a bounty??

Both the instruction manual that come with the game, and the strat guide are vague at best on this subject. They make it sound as if some random dude at some random time will walk up and offer for you to pay it off and take away your bounty. I'm MANY hours in, so if this is the case, it's still yet to happen. I know in Oblivion you could go to one of the thieves guild "leaders" and pay them, but Skyrim doesn't work that way so i'm at a loss. :(

The fox really does seem to lead you to stuff you've not discovered yet.

I've got every single thing on the map, as far as I can tell (all main quests, most other quests all done, level 69 now (with no "exploiting") )

I noticed that when the fox popped up in front of me, it did seem to kind of look back at me and then proceed rather slowly. I followed it the last
couple of times while it was doing that, right up to a thing I'd not really discovered yet (these are not "Map" points, that you "discover", they are just
things out in the wild.) Like one thing it led me up to was a big table, with a skill book or something (I'd already read, unfortunately) and 4 skeletons
who warp in.

I'm going to be kind of looking out for that fox from now on. People on other sites have said, "Yeah, but if you go off in any direction you find things you've not discovered...", but that is not as valid when you've pretty much got every location on your map cleared.

The third option that I get, is "I'm with the guild and I'll pay 12 gold", or whatever amount. That pays off your bounty at a lower rate (without your stolen items being taken.)
So its good to become a thieves guild member as low as possible.

Yep. I follow the foxes. And the goats. Occasionally goats can lead you to things. In fact.... you know Angi's Camp? The single HARDEST place to find on the entire map (well, about the same as Rkund and Giant's Grove....) - goat helped me to that one....

What do you do to the goat after it has helped you?

Ahh ok thanks. Maybe I just haven't talked to a guard since joining the guild so haven't seen that option yet. Thanks. :)

No cheese. I think in retrospect that's something.

Melee requires tactics and technique. Dance like a butterfly and sting like a bee. You have to attack, dodge and counter attack. Pure Mage will have problems in close quarters as they won't be able to stagger their opponents. Pure Mage can't let enemies get that close. Staggering opponents is key to melee and gives you the in; it leverages the field as you need to get the inside of your opponent in any kind of melee fight.

Never over-level your Sneak.

Never over-level any skill but your prime attack skill. I skilled up Speech Craft and had to re-adjust my fight technic for a couple levels.

I did my crafting in small chunks and they stayed tangent to my leveling. All hit 100 around 50.

This specifically is a random encounter you can have with an NPC named "Bounty Hunter". It only occurs if your bounty in a hold is over a certain amount, I think. You have the option of paying your fine to the bounty hunter (if, say, the guards in town are hostile to you & won't accept the fine) which removes your bounty in that hold, or killing him (which leaves the existing bounty intact).

I encountered it a couple of times on my first character while I was working on getting the Master Criminal achievement.

Take the Ebony Mail off when you get into a barfight. Also, you should probably always try to level up smithing, enchanting, and alchemy, although the last isn't required. Finally, use FIRE on Centurions.
