LED Televisions?

Post » Tue Oct 04, 2011 2:32 pm

Does anyone know where I can get a decent 30-40" LED TV for around 350. I would like at least 1080p. What are to pros and cons of LED VS. LCD? Would I be better off buying an LCD since they are cheaper?

The only difference is the backlight. LED TVs are still LCD.

Oh, what makes The non LED ones so much cheaper then? Will there be a big quality difference?

Also would there be anything wrong with using Paypal Bill Me Later to buy it?

Any experience with this?

That all depends on the brand.

I recommend Vizio there pretty good. I don't own one but Ive stared at them in stores enough.

CCFL back-lit TVs are cheaper because they are older technology that is being phased out.

CCFL (traditional LCD TV backlightning) is cheaper than LED mainly because it's old tech I guess.

CCFL actually offer better picture quality than edge-lit LED (which most LED backlight TVs are), the advantage of LED is mainly that it consume noticeably less energy than CCFL so you get lower electricity bills and makes the TV more slim (and there are a surprising amount of people who care more about how the TV look rather than the picture quality). Especially the Samsung edge-lit LED TVs seem to suffer a great deal from "clouding", but hey, they look good :P

I would save for 3 weeks rather than take any payment plan.

While this thread is going, can someone recommend a TV around 42" or so? I prefer it be no more than $500 (not including tax). I'm making my first jump into HD (computer monitor aside) and would like my first buy to be a product of good quality.

There's no inherent picture quality difference between LED edge-lit LCD TVs and CCFL backlit LCD TVs except that the LEDs will theoretically consume less power and last longer. Also, the edge-lighting allows for thinner TVs. That doesn't mean that some of the newer models that happen to be LED edge-lit aren't just designed better or built with better LCD panels, though, there's just no inherent picture quality advantage to one type of backlight vs. the other. Where you'll see some advantages is in the local-dimming LED backlights. This is typically reserved for the more expensive models...it involves an array of individual LEDs behind the LCD panel that can dim or turn off in parts of the screen that are supposed to be dark (prevents LCD backlight "washout" that makes blacks look grey). I have one of these, and it does make a difference, but they're expensive.

It does bug me that they market these as "LED TVs," though. They're not. They're still LCD TVs. Real OLED TVs exist, but it remains to be seen whether or not that will be the "next generation" of displays or not.
