[REQ] Legion Shields

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:35 pm

So as a big Rome: Total War fan I really like roman footsoldiers with those good looking huge shields... not to mention forming a testudo. Now... why does our beloved F:NV emperor didn't think of it? I'm thinking of reworked (read: reinforcedand red painted) police tactical shields from before the war. Sure they will not stop a .50 cal rifle... but a hunting shotgun or an occasional melee attack shouldn't trouble them. So now there's a big problem. I don't have any idea how to model and skin something for Fallout but I really want such a shield.... Any chance a brave modder would stop making the 1002324th stripper outfit and start something really really cool?

I remember reading a thread about shields before NV was released and there were a lot of cool ideas about implementing them. I'd really like to see these added back into the game and have them be usable as actual shields, though I'm not sure how possible it'd be. It'd be cool if someone would try though (hint hint) :hubbahubba: .

How about stripper outfits for would-be female legionnaires? :P

But okay, now seriously, do "Shields" even work in NV like in Oblivion?

No.

It might be possible with FOSE and new animations, but I'm not certain.

Yes working shields would be hard to implement but maybe a little armor attachment would be a good start. Of course having those soldiers take cover behind them would be awesome. But a slight increase in DT and a huge shield straqed to the forearm should go a long way...

Riot shields.

This! I could totally see this.

An army of centurions, armed with machetes made from lawn-mower blades and pre-war riot shields marching in formation.

I support this idea 100%. A slowly advancing, tightly packed formation of units protected only by handheld shields would be awesome to shoot a Fat Man at... or a missile launcher... or grenades... or just lay a minefield or some C4 if you're lazy...

...wait, was this mod supposed to HELP Caesar? :P

(Please don't take this post too seriously. I just thought I'd throw that in...)

Rifle bullets and some handgun ones can shoot through brick (and most other) walls and the length of cars easily, nevermind the shields of old. I can see it as being somewhat practical if the shields had kevlar in them or something but even then a bunch of bullets or an automatic rifle would tear it apart. it'd only really be useful against low powered handgun fire, but I guess you can still implement it if you don't really care about realism.

The blocking animation for unarmed attacks would totally work for this.

Well this is Fallout, so realism should be on the back of everyones minds when it comes to it :P Fun over Realism and all that.

I've just came up with a pretty simple way of using them. It would basically be as simple as making a model for it and adding some pre-made animations to it. Although it would only be able to be used on it's own with no weapon. Basically, when you right click, the shield would be brought up with the unarmed blocking animation (like another poster said) and when you left click, it uses the punch animation. Basic, but it's a start.

Try to make different levels of shields. The wooden kind to the riot shield each increasing in DT.

That actually gives me an interesting idea...what about making a Brass-Knuckles type weapon, with the left hand being the shield, the right being the machete or similar blade? Admittedly, they'd be bound into a single weapon (sword and shield), but it should still be doable.

Couldn't you add a shield to every unarmed weapon? Like "Ballistic Fist with Shield", and then the regular attack would be whatever it normally would be and right click will just bring up the shield that's on your arm. I don't know about the giant rectangular shields because there'd be loads of clipping issues, though.

Eww, don't go down such a messy direction. Chances are, using the Hand-to-hand animations for the shield AND a weapon would look pretty terrible.

Wouldn't it be possible to have it as an apparel item that changes the animation melee weapons use for blocking? After all, shields in Oblivion theoretically did that.

Against 200 year old guns and ammunition. And yes I won't expect it to stop a .50cal bullet... Also, it can be used as soft cover. He may shoot throught, but he can't directly aim at important things. The legion is not exactly realistical.... keep in mind they manage a draw against guys with heavy machineguns and marksmans.... with just a bunch of lawnmower blades....Granted, it's more "Rule of cool" then realism....

A modern testudo formation:

And if we go up against magnum ammunition:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_shield Ballistic shields.

Keep in mind the US had a pretty big riot at its hands mere months before the bombs fell... its quite possible that all those riot response groups had such shields and the legion got them all

Different types:

Wooden shield:
most roman design, with scrapmetal and kevlararmors nailed on

Tactical Riot shield:
standart police equip, painted red, slightly reinforced

Tactical electrified Riot shield:
Yes those things exist really. Touch it from the wrong end and you won't touch it agian.

Ballistic Shield:
For Cesars bodyguards and high ranking guys. Weights quite something and slows down. But stops anything except of a .50cal rifle

This definitely does seem like it would be right up someone's alley.

I hope someone decides to pick up the idea, because after all the suggestions and information posted here... now I really want to experience the fun of bashing in someone's face with a police baton, then ducking down behind my Ballistic Shield to avoid getting shot in the head. Again.

It would fit, but they would need animation and AI to support it.

If I had a shield model I could easily texture it i think, shouldn't be hard at all. A riot shield or something would work, then I'd just need to paint it red, add some scratches and dents and a Legion insignia. I can't model though, just do texturw work, and I wouldn't know how to implement it as a working item, I know how to make it an item in the GECK, but making it actually work is way beyond my capabilities.

Still, if someone makes a riot shield model and wants it textured, I might be available, feel free to ask at least :)

http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7918 from FO3 has shields made out of common wasteland junk - Sewer Grates, signs, etc. It would be pretty sweet to see these implemented, and I think it would fit right in with Fallout.
