Lessons for the community: Patience and understanding, drivers were the main fault, ID can't do anything about it until ATI fixes OpenGL driver. IDTech5 is the most advanced/complex OpenGL software on earth, no other games at this complexity have ever been developed under OpenGL. Graphics vendors weren't prepared. TLDR: The game is ahead of it's time.
Lessons for Carmack: Auto-Configurers are bad, just give people a [censored]load of options, no need to babysit them. Also, in the vital weeks around release, don't bring up PC vs Console comments ... does more bad than good. Distancing away is a lazy thing, offering something in
From the time i heard Tim Willits say "the game automatically adjusts the settings ..." i knew it would be bad - auto-configurers have never worked well, even if you want to make it super perfect, somebody will always want to customize to it's liking, also Rage without postprocessing looks great too - kind of remembers me of the old times texture feel that was more raw-looking .
