I haven't expiremented with this yet, but at your level your best bet would be to go heavy armor+steed stone. I'm assuming that at your level you have played around with crafting and it would be in your best interests to go with some daedric armor enchanted for your playstyle.

edit: with heavy armor 100, Ancient Knowledge, some smithing potions and gear enchanted for smithing you can get your armor rating beyond the 576 max without the shield. After that its a matter of enchanting with your preferred resists or whatever.

If that's how you feel, then do the same with dragonscale armor. You'll suffer a bit with the armor rating but you should do fine. A maxed base armor rating of 576 is hardly necessary, especially if you use alteration spells. Sorry you spent the perks btw. If you want to continue wearing robes then do so, just remember the main piece of your armor will always be missing and you'll suffer for it by having to cast your armor spells.

My mage is a necromage vampire (check the link in my sig for details, you basically get a boost for everything as a vampire with the necromage perk), as a result I get ebonyflesh for 375 armor rating and the lord stone for +62 armor rating. This gives me an armor rating of 437, isn't far of the cap of 667. Ebonyflesh lasts for 4+ minutes when dual cast, because of the necro boost.

I can also throw in a greater ward for +100, or two for +200. Then I have 637 armor rating, resulting in 76% damage resistance, which isn't needed even on master.

You do realize that you have wasted those 'mage armour' perks if you go with armour. Just stick with robes and use enchanting to improve things...

I'm just saying if the OP is playing on a lower difficulty setting, then by lvl 65, they are walking all over most enemies and a few armor points won't make much difference.
If they are playing on a higher difficulty, then they most likely want a challenge and don't need to be min/maxing armor.
So pick whatever looks the coolest.

If I where you in that same situation, I would probably go with cloths. you can where more of them, so you can enchant more and get more benefits, right? Get pants, shirt, shoes, then a circlet an amulet and a ring. That's 6 verses 5 enchantments. Could work more in your favor.

I only wear enchanted clothes, and I have the perk where you can double enchant and it's awesome. Im also level 65 andI have no issues getting killed. Im actually pleased with the outcome of the stuff I'm wearing, don't know if this helps but here's what I have on:
Master robes of Destruction
Barter & destruction necklace or barter & destruction necklace or destruction & illusion necklace
Major ring of recovery (magicka regenerates 100%)
Sneak & Carry weight boots
Sneak & carry weight gloves
Mage hood with destruction & illusion.

I generally forget to use my ebony flesh (even with the Mage armor 3/3) and seem to do fine.

I've considered using armor, just to up my armor skill, but not fond of the look lol.
I've also found a good way to level one handed is to use paralyze in one hand and then run up and whack on the enemy.
I'm starting to enjoy archery, with my sneak levels and double enchanted bow I can kill almost anything while staying undetected.

OP, you're level 65, but are your armor skills high at all? If you haven't been wearing armor or your armor skills aren't very high, I'd just stick with clothes and the mage armor. Besides, you already invested in the 3 mage armor perks, why waste them by wearing armor? (Remember the Mage Armor perks DO NOT work if you're wearing armor, so if you wear armor you basically wasted 3 perks).

I'm currently playing with a pure mage. The only armor I can say I've worn is light gauntlets and boots. I've always worn robes. Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Expert, and so to be - Master robes. Right now, I'm wearing the Expert Robes of Conjuration/Shrouded Gauntlets/Shrouded Boots/Adept Hood. And the Shrouded stuff is from the Dark Brotherhood.

I wore Elven gauntlets and Dwarven boots for awhile at first, but that didn't seem very mage-ish.

As for armor spells, I've been using Stoneflesh since the beginning and I've stayed alive for the most part. I plan to go buy Ebonyflesh or something when I go back to the College of Winterhold from Tolfdir. Alteration seems kinda easy to level up. I don't use it that often and it's already above 70 points. Detect Life is a great way to level up Alteration. Just using it during a Dark Brotherhood quest, while sneaking around, leveled up Alteration by a few levels.

In conclusion: I use robes and Alteration defense spells to stay alive. They work pretty damn well. Though I must add that I don't do a lot of hand-2-hand combat, as I am a strict mage character, and mostly use Conjuration against enemies. I summon Atronachs and Dremora and then use Destruction spells or Conjured bows/swords to help my summoned ally.

Scaled armor, equipped mace and sheild, Volsung mask. Best look ever. My charachter looks killer. I stopped using the Scale armor and started using glass since it has a higher rating, so he doesn't look so good anymore, but I like the glass armor in this game better than glass armor in Oblivion, especially the helmet. The glass helmet in Oblivion was incredibly lame looking.

Cant unerstand, and still cant, why people would need 576 armor rating or more, oh, and enchanted with 23432435 resistance to everything. I got 40 fire resist and 20 frost, and a a mara amulet restoration 10% cheaper and thats it, and armorrating somewhere in the 100s and i walk trough everything with my svcky 300hp, level 29 one handed mace light armor, heavy shield.
Whats the fun in becoming immortal? Really want someone to explain that, because i dont get it. I dont mind dieing once in awhile, keeps me on my toes and some battles can be challenging. Some i even reload because they where so much fun to do, and keep reloading untill im sattisfied with the outcome, a good victory.
But with those crazy enchants, crazy armorrating, what battle is there that would provide a challenge?

And no i dont wanna play on master because i loath battles that take forever simply because the other guy has a billion hp, the outcome would be the same. I just dont like exploiting things to become a godmode.
To answer Op question, if your a mage, go unarmored because imho, thats how mages do it, youre a mage wtf you need armor for, act like one.
